Re: 新小拔 (A Practical Experience)

Hi

I don't understand what is the big deal to use these 10% and connection.  If you have the criteria why don't you use it.  It's reality in the world.  But it works.  Don't feel bad.  If I have this 10% and connection, definitely I will use it.  I don't care how people think.

As I know the process of the application, it just looks like "picking beans", if you have 10 points already, it doesn't mean you will get it in.  You still need to pick up many beans.

Regardings some parents pointed out much more competition in DBSPD because of kids need to study a lot like sports, music...etc then got a chance.  But just think deeply, everyone considers it is the good school, if you run this school, what kind of students you are looking for?

Of course, I don't suggest pushing your kids to join these activities too much because of parents' dream.  However, your kid can capable to doing so, as a parent, encourage more.  Don't ask how to disdinguish because you should know.

Also, connection always happened in every school.  Not only apply in DBSPD.

The kids who accepted by DBSPD, as I know among my kid's classmate, they were really smart, almost everyone of them got award when they graduate and it wasn't too many awards offered by that kindergarten.  And they were not from rich families at all and also no any relationship to DBSPD.

I really hope that the captioned information can encourage some parents, don't think you don't have any connection or not rich, then give up the chance.  May be your kid can take it, you never know.[quote]

Dear Philip

Firstly, there was no option for any ex-DBS boy to forfeit their 10% and I trust that in so doing is "add legs to a snake" and it is like renouncing your surname or inheritance just to prove a point.  The 10% allocated to ex-student is a gesture of good will and also a geniune attempt for the school to maintain a history or tradition.  Without participation from old boys, there will be no one to tell old tales and there will no one to uphold traditions and old values.

The 10% offer is a known fact for all parents applying and honesty is not an issue.  I certainly hope that jealously is not an issue either.

Re: 新小拔

Do anyone know the curriculum of DBSPD?  What kinds/publishers of books will be used? What kind of teahcers have they been employed?

My child had been given a place in P.1 in DBSPD.  However, I am still considering whether I should send him in this school becasue he is now studying in an international school and doing quite well.  Of course, DBS has its history, brand, system..... seems attracting.  However, apart from these, what are the core elements, such as curriculum and teachers, inside?

DBSPD claims that english is the medium of instruction. However, except the native teachers for teaching English, I am afraid that the other subjects' teachers are speaking Chinlish. They said that they will use an interactive approach in teaching.  I doubt whether the teachers, especially those educated in Hong Kong who had not been taught by such approach, really know the essential of interactive, whether they know how to implement the interactive teaching.

I agree that "brand" is very important.  But the most important is the ways that our child being taught or nutured.

Can anyone give me some advice.  Thanks.

Re: 新小拔

Matt's mum,

Thank you for your sharing.  By the way, who is Mrs. Pau?

We want to send the kid back to main stream school because
1. Chinese is indeed very important for us, as a Chinese and living in HK.  If he does not learn Chinese, he will lose many chances, such as on his career and learning the history of our " mother land"
2. DBSPD is a "famous school" and all their claims (although no one know whether they all can be realized) are very attracting.

I would like to clarify that "Chinlish" means the speaking English have Cantonese accent and have nothing related to discrimination!

"Chinlish" -- 英語帶有很重的廣東話口音

Dear BrainMama,

To the best of my knowledge, I will try to answer some of yours and other parents' questions.

So far as I know, the school has not finished hiring all the teachers they need, and the school has a difficult time in hiring them. The problem is the school wants the best and don't want to hire the not-very-best teachers. The "excessive" teachers are not really the "good" ones that they want while the teachers still under employment don't want to take a risk and leave their schools (and the current employment system). The headmaster of DBSPD even went to UK and try to "find" the very best teachers there. Time is running out ......

I would say the school board will be very happy if the school can achieve 70% of what they claimed for in 3 years time.
There are just so many new problems pop up everyday for a brand new school. It does happen to all new schools. DBSPD is no exception.

I don't agree that the school has her "history". There has not been one student study there for one day yet.

I agree that the school is famous. But it is mainly from the "associations" with DPS and the connections with DBS.

The school has some advantages. They get to pick the most talented boys. The boys get to promote to DBS.

As it has already been mentioned and discussed in this topic, DBSPD accepted quite a high percentage of old boys' kids. But actually the school should have accepted more. ............... It is because some of them gave up the "seat".... and go to DPS.

(A Practical Experience)

Another information of  "Chinglish".

Last time my kid's English teacher, she is a British and quite famous.  She told me quite seriously that she found my son speaks "Chinglish "all in a sudden.  Because he didn't have this before and asked me to aware.

I asked like what?  She explained me that, ie.

OK la.  What's that ge?  Will go la....etc

and

The sentence stucture.  Use Cantonese thinking and direct translate to English.  I think this is easy to be found among Cantonese.

So I realised and figured out that my maid speaks a lot of OK la... , done already la.....etc.

I think "Chinglish" doesn't mean Chinese accent.

Re: 新小拔 (A Practical Experience)

stccmc,
Yes, my maid speaks terrible English with lots of “la”, “ge”, “lor”,”wor” in between. She worked in Singapore for 4 years and my son picked up a lot from her.
She kept asking questions ending up with “can”, say – Madam, I cook dinner now, can? / Madam, I go park’n shop, can?  And my son started to ask questions in this way!!
I just renewed her contract as she is a very reliable maid but with poor English…

I found this kind of English in Singaporean more than HK people.

Re: 新小拔 (A Practical Experience)

Dear Matt's mum

Thanks very much for your compliments.  I am sure that there are also many boys from LSC or Wah Yan that would have the same abilities.  Your words have given me much pressure when I am writing this note

As I have mentioned, I entered DPS in P1 and remained until I left for Australia in F4.  I think it would be important for there to be someone here to explain what DBS is and this is what I will do.

BTW, my wife told me in bed this morning that both of my boys have been accepted into DPJS.  The fact is that I have not used any connections or influence other than the 10 points that I have.

Anyhow, I would be pleased to start a new topic about DPS, DPJS and DBS and to answer parents concern about these schools.

I only speak as an old boy and I am not in anyway associated with the management of the school and my views are my own.  Hope it helps.
