The reason that I advice  your son stay in the local system is you said he is perform very good in current kinder. That mean he is happy in it. If he is o.k.,why not let him have a go.
Just wait for the interview. It is no use to worried at this moment.

Re: A struggle

Dear creammy,

You are right. I should wait and see if my son can get an offer.

Anyhow, my decision may not be the best and I pray that God would lead the way of my son.

Re: A struggle

Some people suggested me let my son study in local school first. He can learn more chinese. Then send him to other country when he was 12 years old for secondary school. Therefore his English and chinese will be good. He can also received other kind of education. Moreover, he will be more independent. What do you think? However, I think overseas study is more expensive than study in local international school.

Re: A struggle

hangkeelong,
I am not agree to send a child to oversea when he is 12 unless
1.you have choose a good boarding school.
2.You are relative to look after him.

It is easier to lose your relationship between you and your child. also, 12 is the age of 反叛時期,you need more time and patient to raise him.

Re: A struggle

Hello toffeeli,

Have you considered Victoria English Primary School? Students are bilingual and it offers the IB curriculum starting from Primary years!
Two of my friends have sons studying there who love the environment.  They are outgoing kids and won't fit too well in local education system.

Re: A struggle

hangkeelong,

I have no ides on ICS and CAIS. I do heard ICS is a christian school and the reputation is good. Since your child is still young, why not you make a school visit so you can have more idea. You can call the school ,mostly they have school visit tour in the morning.

Re: A struggle

Dear Hangkeelong,

I have the same struggle as you before I sending my daughter to SIS.  When my daughter was 2-4 years old, I sent her to study in local kindergarten in Kowloon Tong.  As my daughter is quiet and shy and doesn't like to play with others, that kindergarten is very suitable for her.  The teachers there like her very much as she would follow all the instructions and sitted aside to see other classmates to play.  Every year she would receive some kinds of rewards.
She also told me the teachers are very nice and love her very much.

I decided to send her to International kindergarten when she was 4 years old. She is studying in Primary 3 now. Every year I am happy to hear fromt her teachers that she makes improvement in playing with others and has confidence to speak out her ideas.  She did a lot of Show and Tell last year in the class( Show and Tell: prepare something to share with classmates by standing up in front of the classmates). She enjoys her school life.

I think I have made a right choice for my daughter to study in International school.  I am luck that her school emphasizes both in English and Chinese.  She can write over 300 words for her English journal and around 200 words for her Chinese composition by 4 pictures provided.

Re: A struggle

Dear MomMom,

SIS is Singapore International School, it provides 2 years kindergarten and 6 years primary school.

My daughter is better after studying in SIS, but still has a long way to improve. Personality is sometimes quite difficult to change but balance environment is important for her.

Re: A struggle

Dear ngtw,

My daughter is P3 now.  We have thought about the secondary but not that urgent.

We have thought about the following 4 options after primary school:

1. Hope SIS will have a secondary school 4 years    later.

2. Send her to Singapore to further her study.  We have joined the SHIP Programme and visited 2 boarding secondary schools in Singaore this summer.  Very big and the environments are very nice. The facilities for the local schools are very good also.

3. Int'l Secondary school in Hong Kong. Not easy to find a place after primany 6 graduation.  Need to think earlier but we would like her to finish her primary 6 in SIS that she can....

4. Study in local secondary school.  Due to the change of government distribution policy for primary 6 this year.  The international primary students have more chances to study in famous local schools.  I think my daughter is OK for Chinese as SIS's standard is as good as local schools. Some of the SIS alumni are studying in St Paul Co-Ed too. The only thing is the simplified Chinese that makes my daughter doesn't want to study in local school. This is last option as we want to keep her fluent English too.

Re: A struggle

The Hong Kong Government cancelled the Primary 6 external examination from last year.  Students go to which secondary are depended on the internal examination results and district you lived (as I understood).  As the international school will not train their students to take the external examination, thus, results will not be good.

Therefore, start from last year, int'l students have more chance to be accepted by famous local secondary school. Not only the famous private schools as before but also the government schools like La Salle, DBS....

Re: A struggle

Dear CherrylMum,

Thanks a lot for your information.  I thought about your suggestions for a few days and would like to find out why your friends left Singapore.  If the case is like that, what shall I do for my daughter.  Please give comments regarding my thoughts as follow:

1.  Your friends thought too much pressure for Singapore education system as they entered from Secondary school.  As you know, Singapore people speak very fast and fluent in English (singlish).  For Hong Kong people, needs to put more efforts in chase up for the languages (include Mandarin).

2.  I have heard about the pressure for local Singapore schools as their Government puts a lot of resources to increase their education standard.  Just like Hong Kong, if children study in famous local schools, the pressures are great too. I also afraid putting my child into too much pressure that she cannot get use to it.  So, this summer, we joined the school programme and let she studies in the local school in Singapore for 2 weeks.  I was glad to hear that she enjoyed the school life and thought both school are the same as all books for Singapore almost the same (SIS, Hong Kong and Raffles Girls Primany School, Singapore).

3.  My case is a little bit different from your friends as my daughter studies in Singapore International School in Hong Kong, she knows about Singaore history more than Hong Kong.  She sings Singapore National Song....I hope it's easier for her if she really needs to study in local Singapore school.

4.  Compared to Hong Kong local schools and Singapore local schools, I think Singapore schools can be a choice too.

Can you tell me more about your friends' experience when they were in Singapore? And what happened when they come back to Hong Kong?  Could they get use to Hong Kong's education system again?.....

Mang thanks.
