Language development guideline from Babycenter.com:

18 to 24 months
Your child may understand as many as 200 words now (though she probably says only about 50 to 75), many of which are nouns. Between 18 and 20 months, children learn words at a rate of 10 or more a day. Some learn new words every 90 minutes, so watch your language. She'll even string two words together, making basic sentences such as "Carry me." By the time she's 2, she'll use three-word sentences and sing simple tunes. Her sense of self will mature, and she'll start talking about herself — what she likes and doesn't, what she thinks and feels. Pronouns may confuse her, and you may catch her avoiding them, saying "Baby throw" instead of "I throw."

He is the monitor in his class . It is not because of his smart but encourage him using his smart for good thing (he always do some naughty thing or say some bad word like death).  He is very active in school, he alway leads his classmate to play some new game which was create by him. I have little time for him at home (I need to work at day time and I also need to cook and do the housework after work) but I will play for him during the travel time (on the bus or the MTR) regarding the word.  Sometime is the chinese word like find the 手字部 or others, sometime is the English word.  And also he join the YMCA course for the talent or gifted child.

One more thing is the expert said it is better to do the IQ test after 5 yrs and 11 mths.  However, some IQ test can be done before that age.

Thanks for your sharing, how about his school result? I believe he is a fast learner, isn't he?  Do you have to force him to study? (I hope not)

For children as young as 19 months, qualified psychologist in HK will usually use Merrill-Palmer. Bayley scale might not be too suitable to baby this age. Not sure about the minimum age for using Stanford-Binet but my advice is better wait until the child is a little bit older to take any test. For example, I'll suspect your child will not get high score on Merrill-Palmer because he might not be able to solve those psychomotor test as good as elder kids, despite his very well-developed vocaburary. Then you'll be very frustrated to see the result...

I have just replied a mom on how do I teach my son, let me post it here so all moms can share:

I'm the only one read to him, we spent an hour on reading every night before go to bed. We only start to speak English at home for 4 months and found he can handle without any problem, he responds to us in English. While in school, he speaks Cantonese (mixed some English) to teachers. I've sent him to Nursery since he was few months old. (Maybe that's the reason he learns fast)

How old is your baby?  I used to let my son listens to Mozart but I have stopped, I play WEE SING to him (you can view from amazon.com)  Most nursery schools in the US use "WEE SING" to teach babies English.  My son also learns some English while listening to WEE SING.  All songs sing by kids, they also say some short poem in the CD, comes with book so you can read & sing together.  Beautiful English pronunication.

The easiest to teach them is talk, read and play.

Thank you for your sharing. Some of the methods that I have used to teach my daughter too. It works very well. My daughter is not a gifted child, but I feel that she is smart. That would be enough for me.

One more tip, babies are interested to re-do what we have done and they love to help parents. e.g.  when I wear a jacket, I will ask him to help me to zip, put something in the pocket, button up.  They will learn all these words after trying for a few times. I also ask him to comb my hair, then I will tell him Mommy's hair is longer than his hair. Show him the difference between comb hair and brush hair.

After taking bath, show him 'wet hair' and 'dry hair'.  My son learns 'wet' last nite and he can use it this morning, he pointed at the floor and says, "mommy, floor wet."

I have try some of your methods before. I have asked my son to throw the rubbish away and he follows my instructions to do so. Sometimes, he throws somethings not rubbish.
He also understand wet and dirty's meaning too, but just can't speak. My son is only 16 months, so I still have to wait.

How about his school result?  I don't know his school result.  Actually, his kingdergarden doesn't have any marks on the report.  They just have different level to distinguish the ability of different subject. eg " 大肌肉, 小肌肉, 人際關係etc. He get the higest level for those about 40 items except 1 or 2. And he now studies in Primary one and admit the first examimation this week and next week.  I am still waiting his report.  (But I know the report still got no marks on it , the school will use level to distinguish also. And no 名次 also.)  

I believe he is a fast learner, isn't he?  Yes, he is.  Sometimes I fell quite happy that he can learn fast. However, sometimes I fell quite sad that he learn the bad thing also fast.  Need to pay more attendtion to him.  I need to "correct" him immediately after he hears some bad word or see some bad behaviour, otherwise, he will learn it immediately.

Do you have to force him to study?  Yes, sometimes I need to force him to practice the piano.   I no need to force him to do the homework, but need to set a time schedule for him.

(1&2) I don't know which school is suitable for gifted child.  My son is studied at 國際音小. When I knew my son is gifted, I choose this school already. It is a private school, so it has not any support or fund from the government (you know, the government will give some fund to the school for the gifted child).  
(3) I know except YMCA, there are some organisation has the course for gifted, but very expensive and I don't know the detail, I just heard from others.
(4) I know "city poly" has the 啟

How to find out the baby is a gifted baby?   Mine is 2 years old next week.  He can speak English & Chinese, e.g. "a Pa go out see moon"  if there is no moon,  he will say" Moon go to sleep, see moon tomorrow",  when I stand up on the chair to do something,  he will say"Be careful, mind your head" " Can I have more, please" etc.
I teach him at home & I also have a playgroup in my house to teach other toddlers as well.  
Anywhere in H.K. island for my son if he is a gifted boy?

I think it is very hard to judge if kids are gifted or not, the kids are much smarter than our generation.  I think we have to wait for a few years to do the tests.
