First, I don't know how you arrive at the conclusion that bilingual scientists or researchers are not proven to be more successful that monolingual scientists or researchers. Almost 80% of the Europeans are bilingual if not multilingual. They produce a lot of fine scientists, pharmacists, engineers and mathematicians. Even many Americans on the west coast speak Spanish and English interchangeably.
Language is the most direct way to understand the cultural and civilization of a country(ies). The world's development whether scientifically or medically or artistically is very much driven by the English speaking world (whether English is the first or second language), I believe this is something that you can agree on. One cannot deny the fact that English is still the dominating language of the world. I would feel irresponsible if my children can only be fluent in one language. They will certainly miss out the English world if they can't use English like a native. Likewise, they will be losing out the Chinese world if they can't use it like a native.
Your example of Yao Ming etc is only on a very superficial level. That is a "get by" level. Look at people from China, they are learning English like there is no tomorrow. They have such a strong will to learn English. For what? They want to know the world, they want to learn their tricks, they want to surpass them! Without knowing what your competitors are doing, how can you be better than them. HK young generations have been overtaken by the Mainland young generations as HK lacks the appetite and they are too complacent. What is the result? 结果就是自我封閉。
