I exactly know what you are saying. Remeber I still have a girl studying P4? Her marks on comprehension and composition fluctuated a lot. I am worrying about her P5 study now. Any suggestions for me? I plan to let her join some English courses from summer holiday onwards. Any recommendations?

ahchoi & heidikl,
It is more likely for our children to get higher marks in P1/P2 if they are careful enough in reading and answering the questions.
But when they advance to P3 onwards, they need to ...
Personally, I think reading books (both English and Chinese) is the most effective way.
By reading different types of books written by various great writers, our children will absorb good sentences, new vocabularies and good grammar naturally. They may not use it immediately. But when they are given a comprehension exercise or are asked to write a composition on a particular topic, they may recall those good sentences and materials read before and be able to use it by that time. Obviously, they may not be able to write the good sentences as the famous writers. But even if they can write 70-80% of that good sentence, it is already a good start. And they better write more on certain topics that they like in order to cultivate a good writing habit. The more they write, the better their written English/Chinese will be and the quicker the improvement will be.
For example, if there is a full day’s time to be killed, I would let my child spend half day to read those books she likes. Only when necessary, I will ask her to do some comprehension exercises to let her familiar with the format of those exercises, but not to drill on those exercises unduly.

Thanks for your advice. But there is time management problem of my elder daughter. She does things slowly. We always need to push her to do this and do that. The time left for her to read books is limited. After years of training her self discipline, the situation dose not change much. I'm a bit frustrated. Hope there will be miracles.

Do you think incentives will work for your elder daughter?
I know some parents do not think it is appropriate to use incentives to make their children do something that they want.
But if we consider the usual “carrot-or-stick” approach, I believe more children prefer carrots to sticks.
What about devising an incentive system like if she can finish homework quickly enough or finish reading a book within a certain time frame, she will then entitle to certain marks/stickers?
After she collects a certain number of marks/stickers, you can buy her an item that she really wants.
This may not be the best solution but do you think it will work for your daughter?

Ahchoi,
My daughter's comprehension and composition paper is quite good this time, the mark is 90+.
The marks she lost were all careless mistakes. I think the only reason she got high mark in this paper was because she read a lot of english books in her daily life.
I also start to design the reading reward scheme for my two kids. 我地加油!!!
一套 children"a series 叫 Selby, 作者是 Duncan Ball. 如最近想找書給小朋友看, 可以考慮這套.
The Selby Series
Selby is the only dog in Australia who can talk, read and write. Each collection of uproariously funny stories recounts Selby’s efforts to conceal his remarkable talent.
Tingmum,
According to the syllabus, it is only Ch. 4-8. For the sake of getting marks, I'll have my son focus on these 4 chapters. But now, because of much time and my son is weak in dictation, I also ask him to write those words other than these 4 chapters for his own sake of knowledge.
