Re: ICS Parents

Hello siuhanhan,

Do you know if the classmates of your daughter also need to spend 2 hours on homework everyday?

Is your daughter interested in doing those homework? Would those homework create extra pressure on your daughters or would it stimulate her interests in pursuing knowledge? Would appreciate if you could share with us specific examples on what types of homework your daughter is doing now.

Re: ICS Parents

Cheerfulmama,

I am no idea about her classmates how long they took time for doing homeworks, but I will ask another mama later.

For my daughter, she would like to do homeworks but her slow actions sometime I can't stand it!

The Bible tests is OK for her because she likes to learn bible and she can handle the written tests.

However, she have some difficulty in understanding each word of spelling sheet (about 20 words) and commit to memory all of them, and then facing the Spelling Tests on every Fridays.

Furthermore, I have to check dictionary together with her in knowing that how to use each word for doing Spelling Activities Sheet on Thursday (on the other hand, you should prepare study bible verse for next day).

To sum up my two weeks experience, indeed, this is common case for those who are studying in local school as a primary student.  I think is good for them to learn more vocabularies.  In this case, I would admit for my impatience with her.

Re: ICS Parents

Dear siuhanhan,

Thanks for your reply.  You said that your daughter find difficulty in the spelling sheet.  I have some questions about this because international schools such as ESF do not ask students to memorise the spelling of a word.  Instead, they put emphasis on phonics and the fluency of writing a sentence.

Not sure if you are familiar with the situation at local school.  If yes, how will you compare it vs ICS in terms of homework?

How about the atmosphere of reading at ICS?

Thanks for answering these questions as I am now considering ICS for my son.  For me, choosing ICS is a big change as we need to move the whole family from HK Island to Shatin.

Re: ICS Parents

Cheerfulmama,

ICS is a great schooling place for children, especially if you are a Christian.  They stress on personality and highly academic education.  I love their pedagogy.

Other than they are learning phonics and writing sentence skill, written bible tests and spelling tests are essential, that's why I said ICS more emphasis on academic.

Some of my friend's children are studying at local school, so that I am so familiar with their school life.

Re: ICS Parents

Thanks siuhanhan for your prompt reply.  You are so helpful!

How about the reading atmosphere at ICS?

You said that you are familar with the school life of local schools, how will you compare it with ICS in terms of the homework?  Does ICS put much on memorising words.

Dear Cheerfulmama,

Q1: Actually i am just a new comer of ICS, as long as i could see they have contributed quite a lot of efforts in arousing their reading habit, say, to my surprise, my son in Grade 1, he gets one different book daily from mon to thur...phee...his teacher did screen his reading skills as the books given are definitely to his level.
plus, according to my monkey, i was told that his room teacher would read them at least 4 stories per day!!

Books overwhelm his classroom, handy and attractive.

Q2: Be frank, again, to my surprise, their homework system is quite organised. i could get his room teacher weekly plan every monday from the school intranet. the homework given would be listed and illustrated clearly from mon to fri and the homeowrk would be collected every monday. that is really a peace of mind.

i like the way they teach english and it inspires me a lot, especially reading and writing. all children would be given one reader every week...mind you it is really easy..saying 8 pages. 3-5 words each page. yet the point is not for reading but learning sentences writing, vocabulary, spelling....from the little reader...

every friday, they have to attain the spelling test. the syllabus would be the vocab items found in that particular reader saying 10 words per week. to ease your pain, his room teacher would assign homework for them (mostly writing) from the vocab items., well, not only writing but also drilling their sentence writing skills.

It takes 10 minutes to complete the homework given. (writing, math, reciting the verse given) plus 10 minutes for him to read the story book given daily.

Re: ICS Parents

Dear ICS parents,
I am here to seek some help from you guys. Here we are in HK moved from overseas about 6 weeks ago. Our older son is attending a local kindy and will be at p1 next year. One of the main reasons we moved to HK is to let the kids learn proper Chinese since they don't speak/ write / read any Chinese before they came to HK.

My son loves the local kindy but he found it hard to make friends (easy to understand that cos' he hasn't been in HK for long). However, his behaviour changed a bit (become more aggressive and naughty). Hope that this is temporary due to the stress he is facing, otherwise we need to seek some help from professionals. He used to be a top student and very gentle when he studied at p1 overseas but he seems to be another person in Hk. We quite concern about this and wonder if we have chosen an "unfit" education for him.

My husband and I had been thinking of what kind of kindy and school to put our kids to before we came, after talking to lots of friends and looking up information from BK. We made the decision of putting our older son to a local kindy (maybe a local school as well). We were also told by one of our friends who teaches at internatinal kindy that we should not take him out of the local kindy or else he won't learn good Chinese. But we probably under estimated the impacts on his well being change.

So, I would love to ask the ICS parents here if your kids can learn Chinese at ICS? Do they speak Chinese or English with their friends at school? How much Chinese taught at ICS? Does ICS use simplify Chinese? If kids can learn Chinese well at ICS, then we might put our older son into this school.

Thanks and look forward to hearing from any of you. You have a good weekend.

Re: ICS Parents

Is there anybody sure the school will move on June 2007? Yesterday I passed the new school area, I found the construction work seemed not too busy, but on the other-side, another new school already built and it was so beautiful. If the school have enough money they should speed the construction work!!!

Re: ICS Parents

ISC is a very bad school, what they care is only money, they will continue again and again ask for money, the teachers have treating the kids with no element of love, the Headmaster or Principal are bad too. What they want is only easy money. When they found they have difficult in deal with the kids, they just kick the kid out of their little kingdom, too bad they did all these dirty things in their name of God, they should feel shame for claiming they are Christian, I don't know why they not feel shame to ask for land and money from the HKSAR government or HK tax payers. They also asked for a compulsory debenture payment after they got the land and money from the HKSAR government. Too bad they have been getting in complaint by the parents for discrminiation, what they did is just use the parents' money to make other shut up, if you want you kids being abused by ISC, send your kids to them, you will know how bad they are, particularly the Primary Headmaster Davis London and another Primary School teacher Kelly Polish are two bad guys, they just get hand in hand to do all the bad things in the name of their God, certainly they deserved the punishment by their God

Re: ICS Parents

they have bad record of being accused by parents for discrimination and the case have been forwarded to Equal Opportnity Commission. They have kicked a perfect healthy Child out of their school just because they are impatence to deal with the kids, the teahers are just lazy, stand away behind the veil to get rid of parents. Never have any communication with the parents, just again and again ask for money in the name of their God, they are fake Christian to do all the bad and dirty things in the name of their God, as they have very bad record and show no respect to the parents and public media, do not send your kids to such as so called "International school" in a old and ugly shopping mall, they may have difficulty in their financial operations, why they suddenly asked for compulsory debentures from the parents without the consents of the parents, this case has also been published by the SCMP and filed in the EMB, so do not believe their explantory statement anymore, they are liars and lost their creditability.
