I am seriously considering to let my girl to study in Stafford next September. I paid the Registration fee already, yet, I still need your help to know the school a bit more.
1. Is there a lot of homework in K1/2/3?
2. When they will have dictations & exams? K1/2 or 3? if no exams, how they do the assessment?
3. Is the school fully using "activity-approach" or just claim they are?
4. How would you compare Stafford with York in terms of their cirriculum, other than small class & native english speaker? 5. The turnover of the teachers is high or low? esp the NET?
6. The school/parent connection & communication is good?

Have you visited the school other than on interview day? If not, you can call to arrange one. Miss Chan will tour you to the whole school & tell you more details on it.
Besides, you can observe & get a feel of the school more deeply yourself.
I've also paid the registration fee & decided to let my girl study K1 here in 2006.  
I had a few schools on my list before having the interviews. But so far I think Stafford is really the most parent-friendly & open-minded. It's English cirriculum is high in standard. And it really put stress on training the kids to be all-rounded.
You can see the happy confident faces of the kids if you visit the school.

My son is now studying K3 at Stafford. The below are my experience for your information.

K1 – 1 homework every day
K2 – 1 to 2 homework every day
K3 – 2 homework every day, 3 homework during weekend

They will have 2 exams for both K1 to K3. They need to do the exam papers for both subjects e.g. Chinese, English, Maths, IQ etc. All the questions will be in English except for Chinese subject. For K1, the teacher will read the questions for the children but thereafter, the children will start to read the questions by themselves.

At the second term of K2, they will have dictations for Chinese and English. At K2, the dictations will arrange like "fill in the blank". But at K3, they need to spell the English words and write the Chinese word without selection.

The school is using "activity-approach". According to my son's representation, he just think they are playing games with the teachers. But you can see that they learn a lot at the school.

My son was study K1 at York. There are too many students there and I feel that the teacher cannot have a well care for each of them. When we promote to K2, the school invite us to Stafford. We change from York to Stafford because they have whole day class since K2. In the morning, they will learn the same things as York. In the afternoon, they will have English lesson for Cambridge or JET-SET(Mon & Tue), exercise lesson (Wed) & painting class (Thu). Also, they will finish their homework at the school except on Friday. On Friday, they will have outing for every 2 weeks. At the week without outing, they will cooking at the school.

The turnover is low. My son like all the NET teachers.

To me, the communication is good.

thank you for your detailed explanation. It's very useful, especially your kid attended York & now Stafford, which you can compare.

Seems to me the cirriculum is more or less the same as York with quite "intensive" homework, dictations, exams to prepare the kids for primary school. What I like Stafford is really the small teacher to student ratio & the English speaking environment. Looking at school fee of $3100, with such small teacher to student ratio, it worths the money.

May I ask how come York invited you to go to Stafford after you finished York in K1? In fact, when I went to York for interview and talked to one of the senior teachers / supervisors, she also asked me to consider Stafford too.

When I interview at York, they didn't invite me to go to Stafford.

At the end of K1, one day, the teacher call me and invite us to have a visit at Stafford. I also call the other parents of our K1 class to check whether they invite all York students to Stafford and note that they just select 2-3 students for each class. Some parent noted from us and also want to change to Stafford but they're not allow.

I also ask them why they invite us but not the others. The class teacher said my son is good at Cantonese speaking but he afraid to speak English. They think he can improve his English speaking at Stafford as they have more NET teacher.

Yes, it's true. When my son study K1 at York, he always hiding behind us and afraid to speak in front of other people. Now, he is completely changed. He speak a lot for both Cantonese and English. He is now not afraid to speak English to the NET teacher and other outside parties. He also request us to speak to him in English.

At the visit time, Mrs. Fung also at Stafford to introduce the school. We also ask the same questions why they select our boys/girls. Mrs. Fung said it's because the selected parent are willing to give more attention to their children and care about their children. (We think she is referring to $).

Actually, I think the school want to select some students at similar level to have more intensive training. If the result is good, they will arrange same at York. However, to my point of view, York has too many students such that some activities cannot be arrange as same as Stafford. Also, as not many people know about Stafford and it's relactively new compare with St. Catherine, York etc. they want to build up a good name for the school. So, they will give more resources to Stafford.

Actually Miss Chan told me cases like your son from York when I visited the school. I think Stafford is worth a high school fee as it really put lots of resources & efforts to the kids. That's why I have already made up my mind for my kid to study here.

What about help from school for promoting to primary school? Which primary school your son will enter? I heard from Miss Chan that the SF kids get admitted to many good schools as their English standard is high.

Hi jychan,

I've heard that the school had sent letters to some famous primary school for promoting of our high English standard but don’t know which primary school they had sent to.

Besides, they had made a CD for teach us to prepare profile, letters etc. Also, the school will help us to prepare reference letters to individual students.

Actually, the daily function arranged by school is already helping for applying primary school. SF will give you cert so that you can include them to your profile. Besides, most Primary School will need to review the exam report or homework. I will also attach the exam paper to them so they can note the standard of the school.

Since the SF already arrange painting, English and exercise class during weekdays at the school, we can use the Sat & Sun for some other Extra-curriculum activities such as swimming, piano, ice-skating etc.

Whether you can admitted to those “good school” were depends on how many resources and effort you had put on to your child. You cannot 100% relay on to the school. Most Primary School will also consider your daily life. Such as :  What will you do after school like Sat / Sun? Who take care of the child? What Parent-child activities did you attend? … etc. etc.

My son will study at KTS.

I can't comment what “good school” as you are referring to. Everyone has difference standard & accessment. A good school should be a school that is suitable to your child and meet your needs. We think KTS is the one suitable to my son.
