Hi Charlotte's mom,
I believe most of the old girls of MCS found it hard to see the changes of this school. Primary schooling is not fun anymore, it's so stressful. I mean my P1 and P2 were so happy and easy, yet, nowadays, P1 is already like war. I was angry and frustrated, now that I learn to live with it.
KV English standard is not good enough for Maryknoll. I was just too late to realise and let my daughter suffer. Actually, KV is hard but cannot meet the pace or standard of MCS anymore. Not like a few years ago...I found out that most MCS P1 got tutors, they took Enopi or Kumon for Maths and phonics classes and read lots of books to achieve good English standard. Parents need to do a lot for their children. Maybe I was just too naive to think that MCS was still the good old Maryknoll that children didn't need to study much in P1.

Hi Felicia,

I can't agree more with you.  Not sure about your time, but when I was in MCS primary, we did not have exams until 2nd term of P.5.  Primary school life was really fun and enjoyable for me.

Any advice on English courses that Charlotte should take?  She is learning phonics but her oral English is poor with a lot of "Chin-glish" and Filipino accent.

Any activities planned for the summer?  I am still thinking... want to add some fun instead of just academics...

Hi Felicia and Charlotte’s mom,

MCS to me was a bit tough, thou not as tough as nowadays.  I could still remember that I had lots of dictations (with unseen ones as well) and tests (or exams) on questions which we might not be able to find the answers simply from our textbooks.  Life was not very easy to me (but of course is more difficult now).  Maybe the way mom brought me up was quite different from yours.

I could expect what life will be in MCS P1.  This actually not only applies to MCS but other schools as well.  The “climate” is not healthy at all… Special thanks to HK education system!

English in KV definitely not enough for MCS and other elite schools I would say.  What we could do is to encourage kids to read more and understand more.  Andrea would sometimes speak “Chin-glish” too …

Charlotte’s mom, would you try to apply other schools apart from MCS?  I’m still not 100% sure if she could get a place in MCS…

Final assessment will start tomorrow (actually started for subjects like counting, singing, rhymes, oral…).  Let’s work hard together :)

Andrea mama,

I think I will still apply some other schools for her.  We prefer tradtional schools (that's why we chose KV) so I am thinking of GH and Pui Ching.  Both of them have kindergarten so there is less chance left for us...

Andrea's mom is smart that she knows how MCS is like before her daughter's primary schooling.
Hm....I went to Maryknoll kindergarten and already had tests and mental back in kindergarten, but I think not as difficult as KV. And P1 tests were manageable, I think we didn't need parents to closely monitor our school work back then. Now that parents are the teachers too.
I think phonics class for English is good and don't need to worry too much about the oral part as Maryknoll really has its method to improve your daughter's oral English. However, you need to improve your daughter's reading skills. Both English and Chinese. 3 books per week or twice a week from KV is not enough. Read with your children more often and let them learn to read on their own. Pupils need to read test papers questions and understand the meaning of vocab and stories, etc.
Anyways, if your children are clever and fast learners who are good at speech, they should have no problem adapting the primary schooling at Maryknoll.

Hi all,

Tmr will be the last day of assessment.  Thanks God that it's going to finish... I really feel exhausted when revising with my daughter.  She really drove me crazy over the weekend...  

Does your kid have a note attached to the handbook asking us to gather information for the year-end project?  We need to get things ready by 11 June.  According to the school calendar, this friday is a school holiday (staff development day)?

Thanks Felicia for your information.  Actually I just started to train Andrea reading questions when she did exercises no matter it's Chinese, English or Maths.  But one thing important is:- as MCS is using Eng Maths, the kids needs to understand very well when they are asked to solve problems.  That's what Andrea is facing with her Maths work... Anyway, we still have time to get them well prepared.  ADD OIL~~~

Teacher also placed a note in the handbook asking us to get the materials and information for the year end project and to be submitted this Friday. And yes, you are correct, this Friday should be a school holiday. Anyways, I will submit that this Thursday or next Monday. What's the topic that you need to work on? We got assigned to do the lobster. I wonder what's the value of lobster, need to get information from the internet. Funny is that we just ate lobster last weekend at a dinner gathering.
Why your daughter drove you crazy? According to my son, Andrea always does well in class.
I just hope that my son would not make careless mistakes during the assessments.

I didn't notice any note in her handbook yesterday.  I will check tonight.

Did your kids mention to you about a musical performance at school which involves all K2 students?  Charlotte is singing the songs all day long and I think she enjoys the performance very much!  It's a pity that we cannot see them perform.

Hi Felicia,

I've checked with the teacher.  We need to hand in the materials on thursday (i.e. tmr).  Andrea's topic is also lobster.  She asked me to get her a real lobster, ate the meat and bring the shell to school

Andrea kept on making careless mistakes when I did the revision with her - even thou I asked her to review her work before submitting to me.  I've already broken down the revision into different parts so that she didn't need to stay too long at a task and feel bored.  But... she's still not concentrate enough... Maybe I put pressure on myself and on her too...  My husband keeps reminding me to take things easy (but it's not easy to me as I think the report card of K2 is important for P1 application)...

Anyway, they are all over and hope that we could enjoy the summer holidays...

Hi Charlotte's mom,

Andrea keeps singing and dancing (about the musical performance) a while ago and just can't stop her doing this.  She always pretends to be the teacher teaching and the students dancing.  She also asked us to sing  and dance with her together.  When daddy pretends to dance wrong, she will be get angry and "order" daddy to dance correctly

I put the lobster information in the folder last night. My son kept telling me his classmate turned in the materials already, blablabla, I don't want him to bug me so I got it done last night. =p
You can actually relax because I believe your girl will be allocated to Maryknoll in the first round with 25points. My son needs to work hard to get a seat with private school and/or DSS. My son is not too happy because he can't study at Maryknoll~

My daughter told me that Ms. Chiu has stapled a note in her handbook regarding the lobster project, but when I look at her handbook last night, I cannot find any note (not even the holes from the stapler).  So I am actually not very sure what is required.

Hi Felicia,

I've got the information ready, just wonder where to get the lobster "model"...

For P1... I have some confridence with MCS (would also try other DSS or private school) but just wanna want her to behave well and have a positive attitude towards her work (eg not to rush for work or while sitting in an exam).  I know it's difficult to turn her to a perfect girl, but just try my best to shape her personality before it's too late...  My friends always say that I'm being a bit harsh to my daughter, but I don't want to spoil her.  This is one of the reasons why I place her at KV.

Are you going to attend the "P.1 Mock Interview" on Jul 5?  We are attending the session at 11:45 am.

Hi Charlotte's mom,

Andrea is going to have her mock interview on 5 Jul too at 11:15 am followed by a meeting with the teacher.  I heard a lot of kids attending on 3 Jul.

Some parents said the report card as well as the assessment papers will be delivered on the party day.  So far my daughter didn't tell me that the teacher has reviewed with them any of the assessment papers.


Hi all - have any of your kids talked about the performance this week or the next?  Andrea kept telling me that she needs to put on a long dress for her performance but she doesn't know which date it will be.

Charlotte said they will perform the musical performance today and tomorrow.  At first, she said she need to bring a dress to school; yesterday she said she clarified with the teacher that there will be decorations to be put on their school uniform so she doesn't have to bring the dress.

Charlotted acted as a teacher and taughter her little brother how to act and sing in the musical.  Now my son is able to sing all the songs together with actions!

Hi Charlotte mom,

The performance will be on this Thursday and Friday.  Per Andrea, they don't need to bring a long dress now as Miss Chiu said there will not be enough teachers to take care of all the kids to get change and instead they need to bring a small backpack for the performance (for those who take part as the dancing children and the coffee cup I believe).

Yes, there will be performance today and tmr.  Andrea told me that not everyone will be acting as the dancing children and 咖啡杯, some will be acting like butterflies.  Andrea is very excited about the performance as she missed last year due to the school closure.  

Huen Huen saw me today as I dropped Andrea to school.  She looked very happy

Actually all the kids in the classroom looked very happy too.  Some of them were chatting while others played with the lobster.  The atmosphere was quite different from normal school days.  I think that's becos all the assessments and most of the classes were over for this school year.  They were doing the year-end project now...
