我今日叫阿女帶左份沙田英文班嘅章程比你囡囡, 不過唔知佢地可唔可以完成任務.

我問左課程嘅時間, 星期六有phonic class. 但phonic 有幾個 level. 佢話最好同阿女做一次 assessment, 睇吓應該讀邊一班. 不過, 我囡囡做左 assessment, 又帶左佢地 K2 同 K3 嘅英文書比老師睇, 佢話佢已經有 phonic 的基礎, 加上K3下學期又會繼續教, 怕再讀Phonic 會悶, 所以提議我地讀 Cambridge starter 課程, 阿女即時試左一堂, 不知幾鍾意, 但我既時間唔夾, 要等佢通知有新班至得.

The phonic covered by K2 & K3 is not a complete phonic course.  There are a lot more than that in phonics, like the magic E, the blends, ....

I think that girls from St. Rose still need to take a phonic course in order to help them to improve their reading skill, spelling skill and pronounciation.

The educational dept has sent out all the form (sample) and the parent should receive it from 9 – 15th January.  Hope you receive it today, if not you shall call them up.

Thanks so much for your comments. Maybe I need to change my mind then.

I don't know much about the phonic skill but I know it is very useful for spelling and pronounciation. That's why I started to search for phonic class for my girl since last June. I live in Shatin but it really hard to find a learning center nearby. I found this one finally but there's no class fit our time. I gave up for a while until last week I went to them again to do the assessment for my girl and so …

I was told that there are different methods for learning phonic (eg. Jolly phonic). The learning center I approached is using another method (I forgot the name). Do you know what method SRL is using and what levels they are teaching in K3?

You're right.  There are many different phonic courses out there in HK now, the most common known will be Jolly & Letterland.  From some magazines, I also saw ad for Synthetic Phonics which I am also interested, but the centers are not close by.  The one my eldest girl learning does not have a name, I only know it is a phonic course. She should complete this course by this Sept or October, it is a 2 years course.  And then, according to some parents, we should next plan for IPA.

I dont' know the method St. Rose is using.  I may need to check with the teacher to know more about it and see how far the course will cover by this June.  May be I can do it on this Saturday. Then, I can think of what to do next.    BTW, when I tested my little girl on the phonics, I think her blending power is quite good.  So, I think St. Rose did help them to build the concept on the letter sounds and how to blend the sounds.  So, they should be quick to learn in any other phonics courses.

Hi, Hayaymama,

I think you should call the EMB and tell them that as at yesterday, you still waiting for the letter.  You should double check with them your mailing address.  By the way, the letter should send to the address you declared in the 1st round.  Which address did you declare?  Please check that one as well before you make the call.

Thanks again for your information. I agree that the girls have learnt the basic concept and obviously it improves their reading skill.
According to MLC, it seems that our girls can start at stage 2. It takes 6 months to complete, just before they start P1. Sounds good ! I'll  go there to get more information. I hope that this MLC approach is not too depart from the St. Rose's method.

BTW, can you tell me what's mean by “IPA”?

IPA = International Phonetic Alphabet.

These are symbols you see inside the brankets after each word in a dictionary.  For example, the "oo" sound in book and boot is different.  The IPA is [buk] for book and [bu:t] for boot.  Usually, there is a list of them in the beginning pages of a dictionary, telling you how to sound that symbols.  

If you use IPA, you can pronounce the words correctly.  If you use phonics, you can get a better guess on how to pronounce the words.

The problem of IPA is that you must check the IPA of each word in order to understand how to pronounce, which means, you must check before you say it.  For phonics, you don't need to do this.  So, for kids, who don't even know how to use a dictionary, phonics will be a better choice.  IPA should be introduced to them at a later stage when they start using the dictionary.  

However, you can learn it if you don't know what it is, then you can teach her by yourself.  Once you know how to use the IPA, you can explain a bit whenever you use a dictionary with her.

I learnt the IPA before.  It's good but is more suitable for bigger child and adult.  I think our children should learn phonics in this stage first.

I  learnt the IPA when I was about 13 years old.  Don't really use it much, so my pronounciation is not good. -- Too lazy to check the dictionary.

There are books for IPA for adult.  It is not really difficult to learn by yourself.  Just that the course is very boring.

No, I have not received that letter until today. Probably it's lost by post... So, I called the EMB; The officer has cross checked our reference number & all the info is correct. She told me just bring along the P1 application form (yellow paper) to the dedicated school tomorrow is fine. She advised me the letter actually contains a sample of the 'SCHOOL PLACES ALLOCATION' form for the 2nd lucky draw. She fxed me a copy for 'practice'...
