Re: ICS Parents

Dear heratang,
I understand now.
The web site of ICS mentioned all staff are christrian, so you can feel more confidence.
I am not a Christrian but I had studied Bible for 15 years. I just concern the quality of education.

My girl is studying in ESF TY K1 and will transfer to ICS R2 in the coming August. ESF is pretty good and my daughter is studying happily here. The only reason why I move is that we're devoted Christians, we wish my girl could study at a Christian school. I could remember last year, there was a theme in ESF TY called Diwali, which is an Indian festival. The school was decorated with many Indian Idols, the children read the stories of Indian gods and learnt their way of praying and celebrating this festival... To non-christians, I think it's fine, just an experience to other culture. But as a Chrsitian, I was very unhappy, and my daughter was absent on the day when they learn the Indian prayer. That's why I deceide to move her to a Christian school.

Re: ICS Parents

Thanks ivac,

I think I won't stay at Jubilee long, as there's nothing to shop. So 30mins might be enough. I think I will go back home with my son (I fired the filipino maid and I'm now looking after two kids by myself...) to have a nap and then drive back to pick my girl up. If I don't go home, I think I can park the car at Lucky centre. Thank you for your suggestion.

Re: ICS Parents

Appreciate that if ICS parents could share more about the school life at ICS.  Do you know if the reading atmosphere is strong at ICS?  I understand that English is the primary and core language at ICS.  However, do you know if they are planning to have more emphasis on Chinese teaching?  Pls. advise.

Re: ICS Parents

The ICS Registration Package had been sent out last week. If any parents didn't receive it, please check with the school.

See you all on August 9!

Re: ICS Parents

CherylMum,
a.) A3 size folder means those plastic waterproof ones with zipper.  You can buy those easily at stationary stores.  The zipper is the fabric kind of zipper.  I am not sure if you will understand which one I am talking about though...
b.) Buy a bigger school bag.  The A3 folder can never be fitted if not folded.  Just fold the folder and put it in the school bag.  Arts and Crafts will be put in that folder so your child's school bag will not get dirty.  You need a bigger school bag anyway because you also need to put snack box, water bottle, and spare clothes in it.
c.) Don't worry about dress code.  Many kids do not follow the dress code.  If you really want to follow, I suggest that you let your child wear uniform.  It is very reasonable priced.  Around $45 dollars per bottom and top.  Some kids do wear uniform in R2 and R1 classes.
d.) No.
e.) No restrictions on shoes, unless it is sandals.  Also, "fancy" or "sparkling" ones are not suggested, because they will distract children in class.
Be it leather or fabric, black, white, navy, red or brown.  It doesn't really matter.  However, I suggest that you buy velcro closure ones.  Don't buy shoe lace ones unless your child can manage to tide very efficiently by him/herself.
Hope this helps.

3. for the back to school nite..would it be something like parents' nite?
4. how many school uniform should i buy????

You cannot really compare IB with SAT because they are totally different things.  I know that IB is a curriculum while SATs are public tests that you need to take to let people in universities to determine whether or not you have the ability to get in.
If you are going to the U.S. to study....you NEED to take SAT's and TOEFL.  When they said the U.S. also accepts IB, it only means that they will recognize the curriculum, but students still need to take TOEFL and SAT's in order to get in...so...my point is:
If you are in an American Int. school like HKIS, AIS or ICS...your kid doesn't have to worry about taking the SATs cluelessly..because your kids will learned how to take the SAT's and get to practice at school.  If your kids attend IB school, then he/she will be quite clueless when taking the SAT's, since the IB doesn't have any courses on SAT's and AP etc.
Also AP stands for advance placement...ICS provides wide range of AP courses...the credit that you get from the AP courses can be used in University, meaning that in high school, you have already achieved University standards.  Therefore, if your kids take AP in High school, people at the university will be impressed because they know that your kid's level has already reached university's.  Also, since the AP credits can be used in university...meaning it will save you some money in university by taking less GE (General Education).
However, an IB curriculum doesn't have AP...so...始終無禁著數.
Also, I am not sure about now...but this was what happened to me....I know that the British system (I am not sure if it applies to IB) does have a different grading system than the U.S's.  The problem is...in the U.K. system, a C is a quite okay grade...but in the states, a C is a bad grade.  Doesn't mean the U.S. standard is lower, it is just that the U.S. system tend to grade student easier.  So...if you are coming from a U.K system or may be IB curriculum...you get a C (quite good already), but if you take that grade to an American University...they don't understand what a "C" is all about..they are asking for "A's" and "B's"....therefore, I personally think that it will lower your chance of getting into an university you deserve.
YOu see...filing the application of the university doesn't give you any chance or time to explain about the differences between different curriculum and grading systems...etc...
Hope it helps...
Lenglengma

Hi Lenglengma,

I'd like to clarify that while IB is a curriculum, it is also a public test worldwide too. Pls check this link [url=][url=http://www.ibo.org/diploma/recognition/]  about its assessment and this link [url=][url=http://www.ibo.org/diploma/assessment/]for its recognition. A lot of top universities worldwide including those in Hong Kong and China are accepting IB diploma students. In fact, kids of some of my friends have entered famous unverisities such as Harvard, Stanford using IB result. So, IB is getting more popular and that's why many international schools are shifting to IB. Hope this information is useful to you.

God bless you!

Re: ICS Parents

Hi allymcbea:

Maybe I could help you with some of your questions:

1. do i have to buy any school bags?
===> You may use any school bag of your choice.  The school did ask P1 students not to use the one with wheels,  for safety reason ,I think.  Not sure about Gr1.

2. as for the books
===>  The school will lend you the text books, but you need to pay $1000 for deposit at the begining of the school year.

3. for the back to school nite
===>  If I remember correctly, you'll get to meet the room teacher, music teacher, mandarin teacher...

4. how many school uniform should i buy?
===>  The school told us not to buy too many sets of uniform this year, because the uniform maybe changed after we move to the new campus.

5. the lunch menu is cool but how long of the lunch session???
===>  For P1, it's 30 minutes.  Not sure about Gr. 1.

6. any ECA afterschoool
===>  May I know what ECA stands for?

Hope this is helpful.

Many thanks!!!!!

The information does help me a lot!

ECA=extra-curricular activities, like afterschool activities (basketball training...choir...) not so sure whether it is common in international school.

Re: ICS Parents

Hi allymcbeal:

There are ECA.  You will receive detailed info after school starts.

My kid will be at G1 this year also.  Maybe your kid and mine will end up in the same class.
