Jolly Phonics ~~ 一定要睇第一頁呀！！

Dear all Jolly Phonics Mums,
I am a new joiner and am selecting a phonic program for my girl who's now 15 months.  I would like to know if any mum is currently teaching JP with your child, but without going to any activity centre?  Do you think the supporting materials from JP sufficient?

I am asking these questions because I think babies and toddlers learn much more at home, from parent and maid, than going to 1 session per week learning course. . .  those course are only supplement and parents' involvement is critical to a child's learning experience.

Can someone share their experience?

跟住我買在 WORK BOOK比佢地填下顏色,和佢地油好後會post係房裡面囉,仔仔有時心情靚時,會看返自己的作品~加強記憶嘛~

不過DVD,佢地唔看呀~~有點浪費囉~~

Dear mums,
I found the following message from a message board in UK with some interesting statistics.  Pls be reminded that these are of personal opinion and I don't know how creditworthy this site and the writer is.  The message dated 2004

"In a recent study by IPSOS-RSL about attitudes in schools the results showed the use of Letterland falling from being used in 35% of schools to just 19%. Interestingly the NLS phonics element - Progression in Phonics – was down to 21% from 35% last year! Also very interesting is that Sound Start was up form 7% to 9% and Thrass from 5% to 7%. Most interesting of all is that Jolly Phonics is now used by 54% of schools in England! Why? Could it be because JP works!!! Also in the study teacher attitudes are measured on a 5 point scale where 1 was very poor and 5 was excellent. Jolly Phonics (a synthetic phonics programme which starts with the 42 letters sounds and blends and segments right form the beginning all in the first term and is at COMPLETE odds with the NLS) came out highest at 4.09! Progression in Phonics fell to 3.59. It’s plain that the teacher’s attitudes – based on success – are translated into what they choose to use.

When you add to that the figure of 83% of schools in Scotland using Jolly Phonics (always 10 years ahead of us in education!) It means that in the UK some 12,000 schools, roughly 400,000 children are being empowered by owning the essential foundations for literacy!


Just to say – I am aware that Jolly Phonics is not the only fabulous synthetic programme out there! Ruth Miskin’s schemes are pure genius! I used JP from the start and found it most accessible – you can pick up the handbook and go. Basically as long as it is synthetic phonics it’s a winner! The power is partly in the message and partly in the teaching skill. I have got better every year (hopefully – was absolutely hopeless when I started!) That’s why I started Jolly Conferencing offering training by teachers at conferences and in schools so that teachers don’t have to reinvent the wheel – I’ve always found it more fun to pinch god practice form other colleagues!

About a year ago, I learnt that phonics is very important in learning.  I myself learnt very limited part of phonics from my secondary school's teacher but I really benefited a lot which reflected at my English scores!!  When I had been reminded the benefits of phonics, I, like you, started to search for a good phonics programme.

I came across only 2 programme.  JP and Letterland (LL)  I finally choose JP.  It is because it is a synthetic phonics.  There is no complicated storyline & characters.  It uses body language + picture + sensory + songs.....  It is funny and suits little kids more.  It is very straight forward as an action means the sound + letter(s) directly........

I also went to some websit and looked what the others' (mostly teacher) comment.  Most of the comment is positive and from their experience, the result is positive too.

Of course, I did not have so much research on LL as on JP.  In the very first place, I was attracted by the story and charters of LL.  Most of them are very logic, interesting and very creative.  LL even teaches more complicated blending then JP and I can say that LL is more comprehensive than JP.  However, considering the ability of my little daughter who was 19 months when start JP, I choose JP finally.

I am not a professional on English or phonics.  In my own and only personal opinion, JP suits little kids, say can be start from 1.5 or 2.  They can learn it very fast.  For LL, I think at least 3.  May be only at that age, they have the ability to "translate" the story/ character to the sound of letter and vice versa.

What's your opinion??  Have you decided yet??  (as I saw that you are looking for LL's material)

For the sufficiency of the supporting material.  As the programme and the method is simple, those materials are enough to support me at the time being.  Oh, I attended the parent/ teacher training too.  It is very useful.

As I said, some of the sounds of letter are not covered by JP.  (For example, g has 2 sounds as in go and gym.)  I think when I go further in the future, I will use another programme like LEM.

我係順住聽架,因為平時如果係屋企播佢地係唔會專心架,只有我駕車,車他們上學時,係車到放出來,他們會比較專心一點囉,所以隻jp song我只係放在車裡囉~~

現在你女女快2歲,又真係幾煩人既~~~~希望你能應付啦~~

Thanks for your sharing, indeed i have read all the posting in both JP and LL in the Babykingdom, and they are really useful for me to chose from.  MarieYuen, whose is practising LL to her 2 daughters, is a friend of mine and I do see the fruit of her effort.  But at last I decided to use Jolly Phonics, mainly because it's a system that suits more for young baby.  

I am looing for LL handbook because I would like to understand more about LL and see if this program can fit after my baby have finished JP.  LL seems to me a more comprehensive one.

ANd you really have a good memory. . .I seldom visit the Tung Chung Mom club but you still remember me.

For other mums, I have checked pricing of JP materials in the following shops but at last I bought it from Wise Kid and HK BOOK Centre.  WK offer good price, and I have 10% discount by using UOB credit card, but their stock is not complete, at least at the moment.  HKBC offer similar price as WK, but only 5% discount by using Hang Seng credit card.  HKBC have more stock though.

Hi everybody,  after I come back from my trip, I am very lazy and just teach 3 letter sounds within a month!!

I come across a problem, that is revision.  I found that revision is very important.  When I am lazy and not review the newly taught sounds (either by sing songs or just point-and-say) my daughter just forget them all!!

所以說, 小朋友學得好不好, 大部份是大人的責任.

大家努力呀!!  祝小朋友越學越叻!!

I will be out of HK again.  Hope more mum share here.

嘩, 一口氣看完所有mama post 的information, 真利害, 我也想找phonics 給我4yrs kids, 如果我選jp的話, 是否學完jp, 便表示學懂phonics.  

如果不是, 那學完jp, 應學那一種phonics.

而jp應在家中教她(但我不懂phonics的), 還是出去上course呢?
