Re: 我驚駭地得悉男拔萃校長張灼祥居然要求一個小六學生......

I raised this questions because I happened to come over Michael Porter's work on market competition (I am not a businessman). Not sure if his "5 forces framework" may be applicable to our situation.

(1) direct competitors
(2) potential entrants
(3) buyer power
(4) supplier power
(5) threat of substitute

In the game of sending our children into a "famous school", I find something interesting -

Does (2) mean UGA, CKY and TSL etc?
Does (5) mean Victoria?
How do we augment (3), if we are "customer", or buyers
How do we deal with (4), i.e. is the market being monopolized by a only a few?

Purely brain storm type of thinking, just to fulfil my urge of "ventilation".

又是市場?  本質上沒有分別.

Hi Sour-Grape,

Your analysis is very interesting.  I believe that a famous school is just like a good brand just like McDonald, Coca Cola.  People have inertia to buy this brands.

However, one little thing is that, supplier power is not the school itself but should be teachers.

Victoria, Logo, UGA, CKY, TSL.... all are potential entrants.

Government is one of the major supplier, and it's bargaining power is very high.

and there is no Substitution! (on Education)

Too complicate, 1,2 and 5 should be treated as same- existing or potential competitor.

In our arguement (seeking a place in DBS), school should be supplier while parents are customer.

If you are studying economics, and if you believe in market economy, I will say "monopoly is not a monopoly".

The "school market" is more likely to be described as "Oligopoly" or "Cartel".
