How difficult are the project work at CKY?

My daugher is fortunate enough to get accepted by CKY for 2014 Primary One and we are just thrilled about it.  But then we heard comments about difficult project work during primary school years and even some parents found it  difficult and finally decided to transfer their child to another school.  

My husband and I do agree the values advertised by the school and understand that the students there will probably develop their areas of strength different from those studying at local schools.  But since we keep hearing the same comments, may I ask the existing parents their view on this?  Would parents with an ordinary university degree be sufficient to support their child?  Many thanks for your sharing.

1.小女兒现在高小了，回想以往對我最困惑是science project,孩子還小，理論基礎不深，一起做得多好都要孩子最後明白理解，並自己弄展板或模型，在班中present,优秀的更可在science fair集各精英一同再展示。因此我本著初段一起找書看資料，中段做experiment，低小可以是theorybased,或簡單的model,後段是動手做展板。他們會有guidebook,老師instruction,過往的精英作品集合出書，這都可guide吓家長。在我而言，只求參與，不求獎項，給孩子學習，給孩子present的机会，給孩子欣賞各同學的理念，都是一種experience.家長是心急的，希望不要有過大的壓力。
2.孩子往常做小論文，印象中從小二開始，訂題目找資料，落筆，present，中小階段學会網上找資'料，學会中英文打字powerpoint,由淺入深到小五的中英畢業論文。孩子自会學懂，學習漫漫長路。
3.大的兒子我小四已放手，小的女兒亦是，但由於各方面差小小，後眼跟跟。
4.所以語文基礎是重要的，要多讀多用，運用和批判，在两個孩子身上看到書中自有黄金屋。
5.世事無完美，這校都有它的負面。

Many thanks for your sharing KopyKat.  I totally agree with you that 世事無完美. But can I say that CKY students in general can develop good language skills, loves to read, has good interpersonl skills, and enjoy going to school at least in their primary school years?  If they do, I think I cannot ask for more.

And I believe introducing project work / presentation in early school years are actually a way to train up our child in those skillsets and is an advantage to have learnt those early. The bad side of it seems to be parents need to get involved.  Just hope that the projects won't get too tedious!  

Please if other existing parents have other comments or views, please do share here.  Actually my child has another traditional school offer, but I think we would choose CKY and hope we make the right choice.

你睇完學校出的論文集，會仲驚。但如果你冇惗住攞獎，就冇野驚，系咁依幫下就可過關，有時甚至完全唔埋，佢交完你都未知! 未聽過有學生做得唔好而要留班。

"How difficult is project work at CKY" is really a very small question when considering whether you should choose this school for your child! I would think about if my child's personality and learning attitudes fit into the school's teaching method and curriculum! Parents' expectations are also important. Strongly suggest you to read other threads here and you should be able to get a lot of ideas. Hope it helps!

Thank you SSChiu for your comments. We were impressed by CKY students' high level of confidence and their good language skills at the Primary One briefing.  But a lot of my friends are trying to talk me out of CKY and take the local school offer where there are track record of good results and university placements.  

I read a lot of other threads about CKY and believe that CKY primary school is probably a good choice provided we have the same expectations and believe in the same values as the school (as you said).  But I am a bit unsure about the secondary school, especially on the high turnover rate of teachers.  As other international schools are offering higher pay to good teachers, I just worry that this issue will continue.  

Actually I hate to ask this question...but for the sake of my child...would CKY students be able to transfer back to local school if they do not find it suitable after 2 to 3 years?   I know there were such cases but don't know where those students eventually study.  (We like CKY, and hope we will not need to do this!)

小女小四插班讀左兩年, 除左中文要搵個補習姐姐跟下, (因為小女中文好差), 其他科所有PROJECT都係佢自己做, 冇問題喎
當然佢吾係名列前茅果D啦, 本人覺得要父母幫手做而攞奬, 對小朋友來說都冇咩得著
當然, 每個人對仔女既期望吾同

Thank you Leunglokyiu for your sharing.  I recently heard that Dr Lau is planning to retire, did she mention the  timing?  And would you think this may have an impact on the quality of the school as I have a feeling that Dr Lau has been a very good "supervisor" of the teachers, e.g. put the responsibility on the teachers to create the language environment in classroom instead of using penalty for not speaking English to the English teacher etc. Thanks.

我女year1, 之前完成了science project. 孩子始終年幼, 主要是家長幫手做的, 但從中教女兒如何找資料, 跟她討論如何設計如何表達, 希望她從中學到野.
如其他家長分享, 得獎作品真是很精美的, 但"如果你冇惗住攞獎，就冇野驚".

這星期女兒剛要做關於昆蟲的show and tell, 今次和女兒一起研究蝴蝶, 她看了好多相關書本, 我和她一起觀察毛毛蟲, 女兒對蝴蝶真的了解深入了, 雖然我仍要幫助她去準備資料, 但過程中她真的學到好多, 這種學習是深刻的.

我想這就是我們學校的學習方法, 是透過體驗去學習的.
如果家長認同, 不介意花一點時間陪孩子一起體驗, 不是太抗拒幫手做project, 也不在意分數獎項, 放心, 這些project 絕對不是難攪的.

I definitely agree on this learning approach and can see the good results from a lot of CKY students.  Just that I am not familiar with the IB syllabus and am a bit worried about university entrance opportunity compared to local secondary schools.   Well I guess there is always risk taking.

dont worry too much, every kid is good in something
even though study in  local secondary school, doesnt mean that you have big chance to go into your target university
