新小拔 is my dream school.  As I know, many parents like this school also, so it might be many competitors.  Is there anyone can tell me what preparation should I do before applying 新小拔?

Having read so many comments about the admission system of DBSPD,  I think it's time I should share some of my practical experience on applying for a place in DBSPD.

Like all other parents, my husband and I did make a lot of efforts to prepare our kid for the interviews of primary school admission held last year.  Since we had no any connection with DBS or DPS and the fact that my husband was not a DBS/DPS old boy, we had the same scepticism about the fairness of the admission system and tended to believe that only connection with the school management or old boys would help.  However, we thought that enhancing our kid's capabilities and overall competitiveness were the only right things that we could do and should do.

Out of our expectation, my kid was luckily offered a seat in DBSPD for the coming school year. There were ten odd other students in my kid's kindergarten had the same luck.  Amongst them, most of their parents whom I know were in a quite similar circumstances as I, namely they had no connection with the school management nor DBS/DPS old boy. On the other hand, an extremely rich parent whom I know swore to get a place in DBSPD by whatever means, but was eventually disappointed.

Although I am not in a position to say that the admission system of DBSPD is 100% fair since what I know and what I have experienced in the whole admission process are still limited, things that happened around me suggest to me that the system is at least not so unfair as so many people sceptical about.

I understand that it is not persuasive for a parent whose kid is accepted by DBSPD to make favourable comments for the school.  But I have to reiterate that all information I give above were true to the best of my knowledge. I hope other parents who have similar practical experience as mine can share theirs here.

Moreover, a successful case I know that the boy:

1.  studies in an international school
2.  plays violin, chess and football
3.  learns swimming
4.  learn English and Mandarin after school

He told me that he has free time only on Wednesdays ...

and ... a lot of money ... hmm ...

Congratualations on your son being accepted by DBSPD. If I'm not wrong, your son must be from St. Catherine's.

I must appologize that I said "connections" doesn't really apply to all admitted students. However, "relationship" did help some of them getting into DBSPD. My son was one of them.

Dear Parents

The best schools could produce the worst graduates and a school of lesser fame could also produce experts and geniuses.  Parents these days shift too much responsibilities to schools and teachers.  There is nothing that DPJS could guarantee in the absence of nourishment from parents for the child.  

The most important place for your young child is his/her home and the love and care that the family could offer.  Being over zealous and introduce pressure or guilt onto a child by reason of whether he gets into a school or not is unthinkablely cruel.

I now have my boys applying for DPJS now.  I have connections but I will not used any of my connections.  I surely hope that they can get in because of themselves and not because of me.

For those who got in without using any influence or connection of anykind, give your son a big kiss since he has done well.  For those who missed out, I really hope that the parents will accept that the place was offered to some kid who performed better and had more talents and stop thinking that they got in by using some influence or connection (I still do not know whether my sons got in yet, not until late July).  

For parents themselves to adopt or to filtrate a "sour grape" theory to a young mind is negative and dangerous.

I trust that to get a place in DPJS is 70% effort and 30% luck.  In life, you reap what you sow.  

However, I was shocked to note that there were two forms to fill in with the application form....one on musical achievements and one on sports achievements (even for P1 boys).   

The world is becoming more competitive and I trust that we need to start our child's physical, musical, knowledge and language endeavours early.  A P2 applicant from a middle class local family that I know has the following attributes:

1.  Speaks perfect English with no Chinglish accent;
2.  Speaks and could communicate in Mandarin confidently and he also speaks a little bit of French;
3.  Attained 1st Grade on cello;
4.  Attained 4 merits, awards certificate in open Kungfu competitions since 6 years old in Hong Kong;
5.  Swimmer;
6.  Attained merit from Hong Kong Speech Festival against primary students when he was still in Kindergarten;
7.  Attained honours and merits from China Nationwide Art Competition.

and the list goes on.

Think twice, three times before you send your kid to DPJS (even as an ex-DBS boy).  In case your son is not a person who are supported by parents in a loving way and who has been blessed with the right mind and attitude to meet the challenges that face them in DPJS, his time at DPJS and is going to be quite miserable.

Firstly, there was no option for any ex-DBS boy to forfeit their 10% and I trust that in so doing is "add legs to a snake" and it is like renouncing your surname or inheritance just to prove a point.  The 10% allocated to ex-student is a gesture of good will and also a geniune attempt for the school to maintain a history or tradition.  Without participation from old boys, there will be no one to tell old tales and there will no one to uphold traditions and old values.  

The 10% offer is a known fact for all parents applying and honesty is not an issue.  I certainly hope that jealously is not an issue either.

Thank you for the compliment.

Frankly, my son has the so-called "little clever". But he told me after the interview that he wasn't feelling well and I had to take him to the doctor. I bet he didn't perform well during the interview. My son didn't have much to fill out on his sports and music talent, no competition awards/merits at all.

My husband is an old boy and I think it helps a little bit. However, in my case, it was the help from my elder brother and his connection.
