agreed that kumon is a bit boring cos it's sometimes too repetitive from my angle. But I don't agree it is 填鴨式教育. My kid is studying English and Math. He started Math since K1, but Eng just 1 year ago. I find Eng quite good (ERP)! He really learned a lot of vocabs and phonics. This helps his reading skills a lot. I believe langauges could only be learnt from repetitive practice, practice and practice, no shortcut...
in Kumon, they have CDs, and the home work would be specially designed on phonics section. they could learn it naturally after doing the homework and listening to the CDs. My kid is a typical example, he really learnt it by himself through doing Kumon homework. but as parents, you have to be patient to help them sometimes, e.g. when you read them stories, and encounter some words with several syllabals, try to teach them the technic of splitting the words into separate pieces and try pronouncing it separately to form a word.
