Dear all,
When I chatwith some parents about YW Book Club, they often have questions on which levelis suitable for their kids and would like to know which books are recommendedby book lovers.
In order to have a place to share, I would like to ask parent-readers to share your experience in childrenbooks reading here.
To have agood start, I want to have an introduction on the Book club levels first:
Catalogues on monthly basis:
Honeybee suggest for Toddlers toFours
Fireflysuggest for pre-Kindergarten
SeeSawsuggest for kindergarten to grade 1
Lucky suggestfor grade 2-3
Arrow suggestfor grade 4-6
Tab suggestfor grade 7 (Form 1) & up
There may be some catalogues published on seasonal basis.
Please notethat these suggestions are made for American students, parents can choose booksaccording to the kid’s own reading level.
If you want to know more about a particular book or author, you may goto www.amazon.com or www.scholastic.comto search detail information of that book.
Scholasticmay also state reading levels to parents in the catalogs:
Reading level1: Simple words and short sentences for the newest readers
Reading level2: Vocabulary and sentence length for beginning readers
Reading level3: Longer stories with paragraphs
Reading level4: First chapter books for advanced beginners
Parents maypay special attention to the following books:
1. All bookspriced at US$0.95 inevery book clubs for the cheap price.
2. All bookscome with CDs, cassettes, or audio books if you want to have somebody read thebook to your kids.
3. All theNewbery Medal books. The Newbery Medal is awarded annually by the American LibraryAssociation for the most distinguished American children's book published theprevious year. The second runners-up are awarded Newbery Honor.
4. All SLJbest books. SLJstands for School Library Journal,claims to be the earth's biggest review source for books, multimedia andtechnology for children and teens.
5. Coretta Scott King Awardbooks: Given to African American authors and illustrator for outstandinginspirational and educational contributions, the Coretta Scott King Book Awardtitles promote understanding and appreciation of the culture of all peoples andtheir contribution to the realization of the American dream.
6. CaldecottMedal books: Caldecott Medal is awarded annually to the artist of the mostdistinguished American picture book for children.
7. JohnSteptoe Award books: These books affirm new talent and offer visibility toexcellence in writing or illustration at the beginning of a career as apublished book creator.
