My suggestion is still, first check the requirements of different target universities.
Many top universities would ask for IELTS no matter what (unless students has been studying in an IS in Hong Kong or boarding schools for many years).

You can check the IELTS requirements of different universities. The requirement is really easy to meet.
Not harsh at all for students with your son's background (i.e. IS + boarding school). Many students can make it the first trial.
Note that university admission would not be based on IELTS. So it would not make a difference whether he gets 7.5 to 8.5. As long as you pass the minimum, it is OK.
不過IELTS另一個更重要功能係用嚟申請英國學生簽證。UK Visa and Immigration要求簽證申請人證明英語達到一定水平,IELTS係其中個佢地承認嘅考試。只有以英語為母語、中小學全部都是以英語為學習語言的申請人方有機會獲豁免,就算是英國公民都唔會有例外,所以絕大部份有意留學英國的香港學生都會考IELTS。我囝囝當年獲一線英國大學取錄,CAS Letter (取錄信)註明英語水平達標,可豁免UKVI的英語要求,但為免被英國簽證部留難(這情況間或會出現),只好乖乖地留下「買路錢」給香港英國文化協會。
