Please help ? HKU -- Dentistry or U of Manchester -- Medicine??

How to choose ?

My son is a bit prefer to Medicine. However, the cost is quite high for us. It is taking about HK$3M – 4M for 6 year study.  An uncle agreed to financial support (borrow money) for his study in UK. But, we need to pay him back with interest in a few years ( not fixed yet -- maybe 8 years) after his graduation. The interest may be 5% p.a. is still not yet confirmed the rate.

It is quite a big amount money for us. I do know whether it is worth.

I want to have your advice on the following questions :-

1.        Can my son pay back the money by himself when he comes back HK. From our rough calculation, he need to pay back the loan for around HK$50,000 per month for 8 years.

2.        Will the prospect of a Doctor and a Dentist a great different ? (in terms of job satisfaction and income )

Please help. Please I beg you all.

97後我識到個妹妹，佢個plan係去英國讀3年醫，攞到個1st degree，然後返HKU讀埋餘下個半，當年收佢嘅係劍橋，佢話如果最終係HK畢業，就無問題，唔駛考超難嘅醫生牌試。呢個妹妹屋企有醫科背境

牙醫（除了public health dentist）全部要用手做嘢，唔锺意做手工，隻手做嘢唔得，讀牙醫盞搞。

dentistry is an art. dentist is an artist.冇artistic sense 唔會係好dentist。

牙醫係超級厭惡性工作，唔係個個頂得順。小心！

做牙醫的壞處：

行頭窄，大部份要private practice

辛苦，牙醫基本上是surgeon,個個patient入嚟都要做嘢，日日係咁做都好辛苦。醫生好多時講吓就得。

除非入了政府，牙醫進修全部自己比錢，都好貴，政府牙醫進修機會都好少。

有一D人仲會覺得dentist is a fail doctor。

做牙醫的好處(in compare with medical doctor)：


牙醫唔洗實習，一畢業就fully qualify。

除左做hospital dentistry,牙醫基本上唔使on shift。

except for very unfortunate situation, dentist won't see people die.

remember, dentist is the leader of the dental team, not a paramedical profession.

在香港，牙醫係醫學界功能組別，怪醫梁家瑠理論上代表埋牙醫。
牙醫可以用Dr.做title。
在外國牙醫同醫生和很多其它professional社會地位差不多。
香港情況，醫生獨大反而是畸形。好多老人家尊稱牙醫做“師傅”，其實都幾好玩！
在國内，醫生、牙醫地位一樣的差！

We talk about money first.

Basically, Hong Kong government provides no dental service for the general public apart from emergency care (dental extraction), dental health education and student dental care for the primary school. The dental officers employed by the government are “company dentist” for the civil servants. Therefore, there are only small no. of dental graduates enter the civil service. Most of dental graduates enter the private sector. Due to the introduction of the government funded Outreach Primary Dental Care Services for the Elderly in Residential Care Homes and Day Care Centres, there are more and more dental graduates employed by NGO. To my knowledge, I don’t think there is any dentist employed by the Hospital Authority.

There are 100% employment rate for the graduate in recent years. The starting salary may be around $40000. An experience dentist in the private sector with few years’ experience could easily earn more than 1M per annum. Some competent dentists could earn a lot more. In my opinion, this is not bad at all. This is comparable to their medical colleague. However, I can’t imagine there is dental星球人 in Hong Kong. Dental月球人 is also very rare.

There is no official comparison for salary of dentist and doctor in Hong Kong. But the following articles are the saturation in UK and US for your reference. I think Hong Kong is more or less the same.

最緊要佢心甘情願自己想入，了解多點，如果佢感覺到你地迫佢，佢第時一唔如意可能會怨你地。
今年有個聖保羅男女既7 科5**都想讀牙醫，唔好看低自己的專業。你連自己都自覺低人一等，有邊個會尊重你？

其實都唔好看輕牙醫的專業，我記得以前有師兄講基本上第一年既課程和醫科相若。牙醫唔係只係洗牙修牙咁簡單，好多都需要好專業既知識，因為牙齒太近大動脈、腦部、淋巴、免疫系統、血管。。。等等。其實唔係我地行外人諗咁簡單。

不過憑常理咁諗，每年全港得幾十個牙醫訓練出黎，就算計埋海外牙醫，一年可能得一百個新供應，點睇都唔似供過於求，出路應無大問題。

Thanks a lot for your advice. Grateful if you could you could tell me more the prospect of a Dentist in Hong Kong. From a layman point of view, the job nature of a Dentist seems quite routine or a bit boring.
