How could both offer you Y1? The Y1 (P1) at VSA should be Y2 at ESF

I have the same question!

It's a tough decision. My daughter is in Victoria K2 now but will move to ESF Y1 next year. If you want smaller class size, better teacher/student ratio and Chinese, pick VSA, if you are for better track record and better secondary school / placement , pick ESF (at least for now but I can see VSA will progress quickly in this aspect).

I will definitely miss the Chinese learning from Victoria. And I do believe they have a great curriculum at their Kindergarten level.

We don't speak lots of Chinese at home (for various reasons), we live in an expat neighbourhood, and most neighbour kids speak English, so y children have very low incentive to speak/ learn Chinese. They don't see they need Chinese at all. So if they were in VSA, they should be "forced" to pick up more Chinese. (Don't ask why didn't I chose local school... well, you know it's a very different thing!)
I don't mind about the "real" or "pretend" international school thing, it's the quality of the delivery that matters more.
Of course some of those with children of lower English proficiency and coming from more Cantonese community/family, they complain about their children not learning "good" English at VSA because of the huge canton speaking student population. Which is also true.

I have children in ESF primary in HK Island. Of course I like the school they are currently attending, but if I were given the offer from VSA, I would go for VSA, mainly because of more opportunity to learn better Chinese. I have friends with children at VSA, I am very impressed with the works they have done. Both also IB schools, but VSA seemed to have done "more" (I am not trying to quantify, and I am not a fan of homework load as well). What I see is more "structured curriculum" delivered by VSA (you got to know IB is NOT a curriculum). ESF school, based on my own experience, unless your child is self motivated and you monitor closely, they are likely to play through the years, they don't have lots of "obligation".

Actually you are comparing 2 different things.

VSA is not a real international since most parents are from hk local school and mainland china.

Although they are IB school, the cultural background is different.

If you want your child to learn Chinese then pick VSA. VSA is an international organized by hk ppl

If you want your child to learn better English, pick esf. ESF is organized by westerners. Most parents are expats, studied overseas and have a home country other than hk. Most parents send their children to study abroad or send them back to their home country.

VSA is a "local" international school.....although they are IB, they target local parents who want to send their children to international school and learn intensive Chinese...

I gave up VSA for CWBS simply because my girl is very active and she is more su ...
Agreed. I think it depends on the children's personality. We went to Victoria Kindergarten and transfer to ESF Kindergarten. Don't like Vic quite stringent and focus on formality rather than ESF's focus on growing children suitable to their personality. Love ESF!

I moved it back to top of IS forum. You should take a look at all the detailed discussion before making your own judgement. It is not a matter of just how high the score is. There are also extensive discussions on previous years results and i have added a link to those at the bottom of first post

The average scores obtained by ESF and VSA seem very close.     But the % of obtaining 40+ is higher in ESF.

Hi Choochootrain,
Thanks for your comments.    As I don't have friends' children studying at either school, I can't have first hand comments about the schools.  So i can only search information about both schools from the forums.  The negative comments from the mummies in the forums really do make me worry about VSA while there are not many comments I can find about ESF.

To give you a constructive answer, both schools offer the IB DP program so the two programs will be similar in many ways. If you want to know about the competitiveness of their respective IB programs, you can look at scores from the past and also university placements. I have a thread that compares the scores of the various IB programs (http://www.edu-kingdom.com/forum.php?mod=viewthread&tid=3081558) and you can find university placements on their respective websites. The big difference between the two will be the level of Chinese as VSA is more of a bilingual school and ESF is more of a traditional IS.
