Simplified Chinese

Simplified Chinese is the trend? Maybe, but there are more IS switching to Traditional Chinese now, because Hong Kong uses traditional chinese, schools want students to be able to apply and learn their Chinese in daily life, this way of learning is more efficient and interesting.

I am not against simplified chinese, but given the choice, I would always choose traditional chinese. I think once you know traditional chinese, you can easily read simplified chinese with some getting use to, but more difficult the other way round.

Note also that quite a few IS also teaches in traditional Chinese for some of their streams. For parents who are keen on traditional Chinese characters, the choice is still available.

To me, language is for communication. Except Hk , Macau and Taiwan, Simplifed chines is well used in the rest of the world. I can't think of reason to go against it

Follow what's the most comfortable for yourself.  I know many mainland Chinese who can easily read traditional Chinese as well.  You can read if you want to.  If you don't want to, I know lots of HKers who complain reading Simplified Chinese is a chore.  Unless your child has the potential to become a Chinese scholar, don't feel bogged down by "中華文化" to make it difficult for him by pushing him to learn two systems at the same time.

Keep in mind that IS kids' Chinese is not great to start with.  I know a CIS graduate (now working already) who learned traditional in school.  Subsequent work and living took him to China.  He said if he had a choice all over again, he would choose to learn Simplified Chinese.  Remember IS kids' Chinese is not as fluent as our generation.  So what  we think of as easy to switch from traditional to simplified could prove a more difficult task for them.

Interesting to note -- I find that parents who tend to travel often to work in China are much more receptive of their kids learning simplified Chinese.

As yesterday's (wed) seminar is for Kindergarten & Primary, thus I'm not so sure for Secondary cuz during the Secondary seminar which was held on Monday didn't have so much to talk about the Simplified/Traditional chinese topic, as this was only a question raised by a parent at yesterday's Kinder/primary seminar! But I think they will in line with each other,I can feel ESF is putting more emphasis on their Chinese curriculum, their students are divided into 3 streams for chinese studies, for those both parents are foreigners, the chinese lessons will not be as difficult as for those local chinese students; for those native language is chinese family, their chinese curriculum will be more intensive and harder, they can choose to attend both local and overseas exam. For others in between the two, will take a moderate chinese curriculum!

Personally I feel that Simplified Chinese is more a "tool" than a "culture".

My hubby and myself have solid Chinese language foundation, in both Simplified and Traditional Chinese, that we can even write in Mainland Chinese style and with local phrase and terms.

But I do want my child to learn the language as a "culture", so it would be more effective to start with Traditional Chinese. When he builds a good foundation on Chinese culture with Traditional Chinese, it's just piece of cake to learn Simplified Chinese as a "tool".

My own experience proves this to be an easy process, but it's challenging to go vice versa.

At ESF seminar yesterday, they mentioned all their primary students are using the chinese textbook which are all 1 side is Simplied Chinese and the other side is traditional chinese words! Lessons frequency has changed from 2 lesson a week into daily lesson! Students can choose by themselves either using simplified or transitional chinese to answer papers, even mix is still ok! So, I think IS are now more flexible on this issue as parents have different views on this, the trend may come to accept both!
