Normal for English. You can read the whole chapter without understanding the meaning due to phonics.For Chinese, usually you can guess the meaning because you most likely hear the words before and because of the characteristics of Chinese words.
Anyway, talk to them during reading. It helps them to practice processing the input and producing the output

Any books, poems or lyrics can be read aloud.
Sometimes, read together with your son. E.g. some books has dialogues and you two can pretend to be the characters.
Encourage him to re-read if he likes to do that.

As you want to improve his comprehension skills, important to ask questions. e.g. in the middle of the story about the race of hare and turtle, you can ask who will win the race? How can the turtle win the race?   What did the hare hare do that made him lose the race...

Can he read all the words but cannot 理解  or he can read only 50%? For P1, focus on reading aloud first.

It's good that 佢讀一頁我讀一頁. Reading out loud also increase his understanding.
During reading, ask questions, guess outcomes, summarizing the story.

要孩子一個自己睇有啲難度，而家同佢一齊睇

每天都盡量同孩子睇書， 有多字，亦有少字。佢讀一頁，我讀一頁

先放開理解程度，愛閱讀的人起碼不怕看字，有趣就睇。無趣的而必須時都睇，總之就是不怕。

昨日看到電視， 我聽到 betray 即刻解釋俾仔仔係 出賣， 佢答我知。我再問， 乜嘢叫出賣， 佢答我賣嘢俾人 我當然有再解釋。 但你話有啲嘢係唔係要等開竅？ 就算佢識晒啲字唔等於明，肯睇書亦然。我同意睇書後問他內容可幫助他了解，你也可藉以了解他的程度，昨適當跟進，但未必能幫到他顯著提升自動波理能解的能力。

我做一年級時閱讀理解好差下，因為佢有少少讀障我揾左個中文老師針對性咁補習。每堂做三個練習就係揾出故事時間地點人物起原經過同結果，循住呢個方向反覆練習，再做埋選詞填充同問答。半年後見到成績。當然課外既閱讀不可少。

長遠講，當然係睇書，喺識字量同理解上一定比無閱讀習慣嘅小朋友多同深。

但我個人認為都要做吓練習，有些題目確係要理解完用自己嘅文字或要一些答題技巧，這些只係用以應付學校需要，所以適量便可。

睇書跟做練習嘅比例，約8:2，因人而已。
