係咪一定要間全英or英普嘅先有機會？

That's why it's important to get into a kindergarten that is attached to a primary school, or at least a primary school affiliation (ie. ESF kindergarten giving priority to ESF primary, or many of the through-train schools in town). You did bring out a good point, fatcni, that it is not just the language training but the entire enrollment strategy parents have to look into.

For PN, the key is not long term language development, but what can get the child into one of the type of schools I mentioned above. The mandarin/cantonese can come in at kindergarten when the child has secured a spot already.

以前K1根本唔使in, 報名就得。重点係讀K点樣做先上到Year 1。
依家demand多左，學校揀D底子好D亦正常。

就我自已認識的ESFkinder小朋友，分別有讀Vic, TT, York, 學之園等等的playgroup/nursery都有，我覺得K1interview 只要對英文有反應便可，程度尤如可用英語同菲傭溝通都夠。當然愈高班要求會愈高

Having said that, I knew a few kids studying in eg Victoria, with 兩文三語班did get into good IS such as HKIS, ISF, ESF. And one kid from York kinder did get into ESF. I think it really depends on how the kids pick up languages. At the end, k1 interviews only require simple english conversation, eg what is your name, how old are you etc just be responsive and not scare of speaking English will do the job. However interviews for yr 1 will be more demanding of course 。

^^That's ancient history when students were still sorted into Catergory 1 & 2, where families who spoke Cantonese were placed at a lower priority. This categorization is long gone, and the key now is the strength of the child's English, not what other languages she may know.

Of course, for young children esp under age 3, do not try to teach them too many languages at the same time. Personally I'd suggest sticking to one core language and one secondary language, one being English and one being Chinese (either Mando or Canto). As to which dialect to pick before age 3 really depends on the child's family and environment.

I agree with Ooray that 兩文三語 PN is just a waste of time at this stage. Target on getting English to at least a conversational level, and keep the child exposed to Chinese for future fluency (or if the family's background has her set for it) -- Cantonese or Mandarin can peg onto each other later on. Any good teacher can help fix the accent before age 6. Remember, a child at this age is learning an immense amount (emotionally, physically, socially, physiologically etc), and doing 兩文三語 will only spread the pie too thin.

補多句:所謂英普/英粤PN,我領教過;3個鐘扣除排洗茶点時間，再分一半中一半英，对比全英(或有15-30分鐘普通話)...[我都同時領教過]
也許我見識少，論英語環境，根本無可比擬。

你既然係度發問，有心的家長當然建議你讀全英，係穩陣選擇，當然你心儀兩文三語，梗有你原因...

They just test the english ability. I don't think they will reject anyone just because one knows cantonese as well.
