Thanks for sharing information about SET. I totally agree that such programme is useful for those talented students who are self-motivated and specially interested in math and language. It has many advantages as posted by you.
The advantage is obvious in American eduaction system. But my son seems to be all-rounded. He has no special interest or passion to study math at this moment. I would not force him to do so. Maybe he is not yet mature. The advantages of SET are not attractive to him. I want him to focus on his school work and future exam. His school has 14 students who scores 45 in IB this year.

But I think SET is very limited to math and English language. Other areas of talents are neglected. I agree that the letters of recommendation may be useful showing one area of strength for other purpose. However achievement at year of 13 will be much less important than achievement  at year of 16 or above for university application unless further achievement in area of math/language can be obtained.

My experience is that unless your kid is born with talent, parent's nurturing may not be suitable for their kids. It should be the kid's interest and motivation to get into SET. I tried to force my son to study advanced maths and I gave up at last because my son had no interest at all. But he was good enough to finish  SAT without preparation. His score in Math is close to SET requirement. I think providing all round ability is more important than just one area of strength before 13 years old.

When will your kid take the SAT?  Are you going to the airport expo to take it?
