What I am saying is, reading subtitles to train speed reading is not an effective means.
Fact is, I used to need subtitles when I was much younger and I had no problems reading at that speed. Most people can manage that speed.
As you probably know, my girl has been a keen reader since a young age. She has also been exposed to certain English environment (in addition to her mother tongue - Cantonese) and TVs without subtitles. At the age of about 7, she read probably 5 times faster than me. It means that subtitles speed was by no means challenging for her. How did she develop reading speed? By reading.
I don't think she is unique, all her friends and schoolmates with similar background can read at that speed at least and I have never heard any of them needing subtitles to train their speed.
Of course, as I said before, if the child gets older and finds it difficult to follow without subtitles (eg ESL learner), then there is no choice but to rely on subtitles. We should consciously try to remove the dependency on subtitles though.
