I am applying G5 for my son, I really understand they may not call everyone for interview. Therefore, just wait and see as application fee already paid.

How about you? your child studying there?     {:1_1:}

Which grade are you applying for? As far as I know, the school does not call all applicants for interviews.

Quoted from HKA's website

"Application Fee – The application fee is non-refundable upon payment. Paid on application for a place in the school.

@Sleepyqueen: if that really happened, you should report it to the principal. I am sure he will handle it professionally. However, I received warm welcome from all staff during my school tour haha.
If you don't tthink HKA is your cup of tea, just don't go there any more.

Since I don't work at the admission office, I can't say for sure their criteria used to admit students. However, at the Open House that I attended, they did say that they try to create diversity within a class, and hence, admit students of diverse background. In other words, what they basically have is this thing called "quota". Whether it is a quota for nationality, race, ethnicity, etc, I don't know. I'd guess it is nationality though.
I believe my admission process was much simpler since currently in high school, the number of students in each grade is way lower than that of the middle/ primary school. In fact, there are only 19 students in my grade in total, including me. However, our nationalities don't really "overlap" in a sense. In addition to my passing of the admission tests with good results, I think I got in also because there is no one else in my grade who is of my nationality, or even race (there're only two Asian girls in my grade, and I'm one of them) The only overlapping nationalities with more than 2 students are Americans and Canadians, but they have very different backgrounds despite their nationality.

HKA is really international. It's not like some other schools that have some dominating nationalities/ ethnicities. But then I guess it also makes the admittance change more reliant on "luck" since you never know if the "quota" of your child's nationality is already "full".

Hi Arielle, what are the "criterias" that the principals/head of school are looking for in a kid when they admit them into HKA?  Would you please share your experience?

That's kind of true. But instead of saying they "conduct interviews" in an unconventional way, it's more like they "call for interviews" in an unconventional way. (which I'm pretty sure is exactly what you mean) I, myself, went through both an interview and admission test before I got admitted by the school. But yes, they don't randomly admit students. The school seeks to create classes with diversity. To be honest, HKA is probably the most "international" international school I know in Hong Kong. Students in each class are really culturally diverse and there isn't really any dominant cultural group (there are indeed a larger group of students from the US but they're spread in different grades and classes). In my grade, I think no more than 2 or 3 persons are actually from the same country. Classes at HKA are truly international, unlike some IS which have a dominant cultural group or nationality.
I guess there're good and bad things about it. The good thing is that we really learn to be understanding of each other's cultures and we hear a lot about what happens at another country a lot. But I guess the bad thing is that it hinders some great kids from getting admitted to the school just because the grade level they're applying to already has "enough of" their cultural background.

I've heard that the school doesn't conduct interviews in the conventional way but rather chooses by profile the child they think will best complement the class. So once your child fits the right "profile" they are looking for, they will call you for an interview.
