agree with HKTHK.  Just go with what your kids like.  My daughter loves books related to food, cooking, ballet, and history the most.  So other than story books, I got a lot of these as well.  The first book that prompted her to read the entire story on her own was a ballet story book (which I have read many times to her previously).  I still remember her excitement and persistence.  She kept reading it aloud to herself so many times. day and night, stumbling on the way but not giving up.  She continued to read until she finished before coming to dinner.   It was a magical moment and it will come to every child.  She had never been a fast learner, and the discovery (although a challenge to her) was simply a revelation, to say the least.  My son, although he has the ability, he still prefers picture books.  He is smarter and everything came much easier to him.  I never saw that moment of wonder as he discovered the magic in reading as my daughter did.  Every now and then, he would just pick up a book casually (picture books) and read it aloud to himself - all rather effortlessly.  I guess it makes my daughter relish it more as she realizes how reading opens up a whole new world to her.  For my son, I am still waiting for it to happen.  He has the ability but doesn't have great interest to read.

Don't worry about the difficulty of books.  If anything, err on the side of too easy.  If you want word recognition, books like Bob books are good.  If you want more fun books, use Dr Seuss.  If you want good story, use picture books.  Realistically, you need to mix them up.  But you need to repeat the books that he likes.  Repeat as often as he wants.  I have probably read some books over 20 times and can recite from memory (so can my kids).

My son never attended K3 in the traditional sense.  In fact, he never went to a normal kindy.  He was at Montessori center (not even a formal kindy) and went straight to Year 1 at IS, starting at 4 years 8 months old.  His Montessori center didn't teach reading and writing as it was just a center.  Everything he learnt in English and Chinese reading, I taught him myself at home.

My son is reading a series called alphakids in school, but I don't know if it's available to public.  They seem to sell it to schools only.

i think he is too young to give you much output.  don't rush it.  Everybody is different.  If somebody tells you how smart their child is at 3.5, it's their child.  Go with your child's pace.  Having some difference in progress at this age means nothing.  There is a long way to go, and eventually, they all ended at the same place.  Don't push him so much that he dislikes it.  Keep his interest alive.

My only advice is: read more to him.  Before my kids can read, I sometimes read up to 1 to 2 hours a day to them if I have time.  Everyday is a minimum of 20 minutes and often more.  My helper also reads to them.  So everyday they get read to for 40 minutes at least.  I also have a small library at home.  I gave away at least 200 books already and still have an estimated 400 - possibly more.  My daughter spent a good deal of her time flipping through the pictures and later, reading them.  It is a great comfort when she told me she has read most of it - often more than once or twice.  (When I packed the books to give away, I had to ask her which ones she has read and which ones she would like to keep). It is good to keep a wide variety as you might not grasp a child's interest at this stage and his taste might change.  Now I know what my kids like, so I buy stuff to their likings.  I also borrow from the library now as picture books and certain chapter books don't have much re-reading value for her age.

another way, pick easier books.

himuimui, how old is your son?

We are not reading the kipper series.  It's a bit different.   This is a sample of what he can read:

http://item.taobao.com/item.htm? ... &_u=s6ge5as6868

He had the ability to read this just before turning 5.  Of course, there will be new vocabulary  in these books - which is what reading is supposed to teach him.  He also needs a bit of help with some more complicated words, but overall, he is OK and can follow the story.

Sorry, I never bought level 10 to this series.  After he finished Peter and Jane and phonics, we read a bit of Nate the Great and Magic Tree House.  Nate the Great is a bit too easy for him without much chance to learn new words.  I eventually found the Oxford All Star series which I liked.  The stories are not too long, with proper writing and positive/interesting storyline.  I bought All Stars because my daughter also enjoys it, but of course, she breezes through them very quickly on her own (she is going to be 7 by May).
