Hello parents. My kid is supposed to be a new K1 student in esf wks this august.

As we are living overseas recently untill this may, I'm afraid cannot reach the correspondence relating the contract in time, which may leads to the loss of the place.

Therefore, could anybody tell me if the contract has been sent out? Which session(AM/PM) been allocated to your kids? If yes, I will ask for a break and fly back to hk to sign the contract.

Many thanks!!!

esf school is offering the pupils that they never had interview(I mean who want to join current Y1 class), that's why they may have chance to reject ...
I see, but this group of children who are rejected only paid the initial sum of $50k and not the $400k full payment, right? Also they should be getting a refund of their $50k {:1_1:}

Same observation here, but then who can blame them when their subvention is about to be taken away. They will become just as money minded as any other international school in Hongkong, no more, no less.

I think you are right. It's just that my understanding is that there are two streams - the regular pool (with the confirmed and waitlisted places) and the 150 nomination rights seats (spread over all the schools, so each school has 10-12 seats roughly across all grade levels.
Based on this rational, it sounds like the school is suggesting the student move from her waitlist place in the first pool to the second NR pool.  Now, based on previous years, the first (main) pool have always had a high percentage of acceptance, once u pass their interview, even if its a waitlist space - meaning you have to be a bit patient.  The other thing is, this isn't one of the more popular ESF (like KJS) either - this was the Peak school, which I suspect may not have as many NR applicants.

Just seems to me that ESF appears to have become more money-minded and opportunistic than what I'd previously observed.

Being a new ESF K1 pupil, we want to buy the nomination to get the double insurance, at least, there is no waitlist under the nomination right. Do you think it is really the case? Thanks!

If you are targeting ESF primary schools and you are offered a place in an ESF kindergarten, then there is very little reason for you to decline the offer. Sure, there are alternative paths to the same goal, but why give up the easiest path?

May be this is the logic behind ...

If the child is not an ESF kindergarten pupil, the chances of him/her getting an interview is slim, so some parents may want to use the nomination rights scheme, paying an intial $50,000 to buy an interview, and if the child passes then he/she can enroll right away by paying the remaining $450,000. There is no wait list because you either pay the remaining sum to enroll or forgo their offer.

If the child is an ESF kindergarten pupil, then he/she automatically gets an interview so there is no reason to pay anything to buy one. After the interview, children who pass will either be offered confirmed places or put on the wait list waiting for a place to become available. Some parents with children on the wait list may not like that uncertainty, and ESF might say if you use the nomination rights scheme you can buy your child off the wait list and enroll right away by paying $500,000.

Just my guess.

ESF kindie kids will have priority for interview at ESF schools. As fattydaddy said, the chances are quite high - I also heard over 90% of our ESF kindie kids got an interview this year. But it's up to your child to demonstrate enough English and social skills to pass the interview.

However it appears the ESF game may be changing a bit. My son (ESF kindie) has a classmate who only joined in K2 (so no priority) but still received an interview offer for a Y1 entry list (ie. waitlist) place. In the past, even though its not for a confirmed place, the chances are high that a place will be offered as not everyone with a confirmed place interview passes or takes the offered spot.

However the mom told me that they are still on the waitlist - and (more strangely), she recently was told by the school that they weren't sure she would got a place before August and she may want to consider paying $500,000 to apply for a nomination place.

Now given her child already got an interview - and passed it, this sounds rather strange to me. But it is what she told me.

I guess there will always be a few odd exceptions to everything, but I'm wondering how this could happen.

Under the current nomination rights scheme, if he paid the full $500k that means his child had passed the interview and enrolled, so the child could only be rejected if he/she started school and then something went wrong (e.g. gross misconduct), or the parent voluntarily gave up the seat because some better offer came along.

I think most of the parents are concern the  passing rate from esf kinder to esf primary

If failed to p1 interview,it's really difficult to seek a place to study the reception. 1 or year 1 in other international school

According to the esf web site

http://www.esf.edu.hk/policy2013#2.%20Priority%20for%20Admission

It's supposed to hv an interview for the esf. Kinder  pupils .

Everyone can share the nomination rights affect the passing rate from esf kinder to esf primary scho ...

This is how the nomination rights scheme is supposed to work ... You pay an initial sum of $50000 to buy an interview, if the child passes you pay the remaining sum to enroll, but if the child fails you get your $50000 refunded, if the child passes but you decide not to enroll then you forfeit the $50000. The interviewers do not know which child has bought nomination right so it has no effect on passing rate.

If the child is already an ESF kindergarten pupil, he/she automatically gets an interview so there is no reason to buy nomination right, but this year's ESF kindergarten intake will be the last batch to enjoy this priority.
