I've bought those 3 collections altogether, "Sa Sa", "I can read" & "Basic Language 500", wanna share my experience :-
if for recognizing chinese words : recommend to read "basic language" :
Pro : simple and repeated words -- easy to meomorize, and also word font size is larger
Con : less story type, less interesting, academic-oriented
For "I can read" :
Pro : strong story telling, more interesting
Con : Small font size (kids may be less concentrated), those words are more harder
For "Sa Sa" :
Pro : strong story telling, close to my gal's life (mine is girl at 3 yrs old) with a bit moral education
Con : again, more harder words, not a good start to learn chinese words if your kids have no chinese base
==> for me, I usually read "sa sa" to my gal first to arouse her interest in chinese book, saying "sa sa" is my gal's good friend for her easy involvement.
in parallel, suggest to start reading "basic language" to establish her word base from easy to harder systematically, and I also point to each word while reading the book with her.
the above is just my experience, welcome to have more sharings from you !! thanks.
