This is very true, we are just outsiders speculating {:1_1:}

Coming back to the original question, "讀ESF kindergarten入唔到ESF小學,點算好?" ...

After reading various posts from different users here, I think we can still summarize a few points based on external observations, even though we don't know the real reason behind.

(1) If a child is accepted by an ESF kindergarten, the parents need to know whether the child is accepted as Cat 1 or Cat 2.

(2) If the child is Cat 1, there should not be much difficulties entering regular ESF primary schools in 2 years time, so it is unlikely that the question "入唔到ESF小學,點算好" will arise.

(3) If the child is Cat 1 but the aim is to enter PIS schools like Renaissance (an unusual aim for Cat 1), being Cat 1 brings no advantage.

(4) If the child is Cat 2, then the chances of entering regular ESF primary schools are slim, and even for PIS schools like Renaissance, the chances are only half-half.

So parents of Cat 2 children should manage their expectations and be prepared to switch to other international schools or local schools.

flashingcat  I do agree with point 2, we are Cat 2 but couldn't have a chance for the interview in RC.  It all depends on your luck. They assigned the random no to each applicant.Bascially, it just like lucky dra   發表於 12-2-19 16:20

I think whether a kid is accepted or not is mostly depends on the performance in the interview. I got a friend whose son is a cat 1 kid with sibling in an ESF school but has to attend a 2nd interview. She did go to the school n talk to the vice  principal for reason. The reply is that her kid has no problem with English, but he observed that the kid might not be mature enough. That's why the school offers him a 2nd interview 2 months later.  Another case i can quote is that an ESF kinder kid got accepted by an ESF school but rejected by RC. The mother went to ask the kinder principal for reason. The subsequent reply is that the kid was seen not independent enough. I do think the interviewers know which kid is fit to enter the school or not. We, outsider, is not present in the interview is hard to know the reason behind.

It's pointless to argue here which type of students RC prefers and you might be right.  But it is a Fact that ESF Primary Schools are non-selective.  This is copied from the ESF School admission, 'ESF schools receive a subsidy from the Hong Kong Government to provide an education for English speaking children who can not access the local system. Our schools are not selective: admission depends above all on the student's ability to benefit from an ESF education.'  So yes, RC might reject some Cat. 1 kids which they considered unresponsive but ESF primary will not reject them.

flashingcat  like KJS this year, they sent out 150 letters to Cat 1 with guaranteed places, however, some of those are rejected by KJS after the interview according to the school admission manager.  發表於 12-2-19 16:13
flashingcat  I disagree with this point.  In fact ESF primary will also reject Cat 1 children who are quiet, not answering or English standard is not up the level.  發表於 12-2-19 16:12
FattyDaddy  We're not really arguing, just exploring different angles and reasons, and we can still make useful summaries out of it so not entirely pointless :)  發表於 12-2-19 02:04

So, Cat 2 kids have less chances of entering regular ESF primary schools than Cat 1 kids, because regular ESF primary schools prioritize by category and Cat 2 kids are at a disadvantage. This is the general consensus.

For Cat 1 kids, having more chances of entering regular ESF primary schools doesn't mean they would have less chances with Renaissance. If as people said, Renaissance only assess the applicant's English ability, then Cat 1 kids are not disadvantaged at all. If Renaissance reject some Cat 1 kids because they are unresponsive and mute, one would expect the regular ESF primary schools to reject them too.

My suspicion is, just like regular ESF primary schools might prefer Cat 1 students, Renaissance might prefer students with a stronger local background. The difference is that the former is expressed quite clearly while the latter is more obscure {:1_1:}

I am not in a position to comment which school is easier to get in.  To put it in simple terms, if you are real Cat. 1 and subject to the seats available in the ESF Primary school, then yes, they are easy to get in.  I have talked to some expats in SJS catchment, they never worry that their kids won't get offer from SJS.  Of course, if the 'general impression' you meant was amongst Cat. 2 parents, then I agree, its very difficult to get an offer from ESF Primary as they have very low priority in the ESF list.

So Renaissance is more selective than the regular ESF primary schools in who they accept? and it might be harder to enter Renaissance than Shatin Junior?

Hmm ... the general impression seems to be the other way round, but anyway, the general public could be wrong {:1_1:}

FattyDaddy,
I don't think (1) is a selection consideration as they do have at least one class of Chinese as Foreign Language in RC per grade.  Those Cat. 1 that I know who were rejected by RC are HK Permanent Residents but the kids are very quiet.  RC have a choice not to take these kids but yet with ESF Primary, as long as the kids use good English and being Cat. 1, they will offer them a place.  In fact, those Cat. 1 who got both offers are the talkative and responsive children.

It would be unusual then for some Cat One students to be accepted by Shatin Junior but rejected by Renaissance.

There are 2 major differences between Renaissance and the regular ESF primary schools:-

(1) Chinese is a major part of Renaissance's curriculum ...
In the PYP, we teach an additional language to support the international perspective of our curriculum. The additional language offered at Renaissance College is Chinese.
http://www.renaissance.edu.hk/content/chinese-1

(2) Renaissance must accept at least 70% local kids, it is their policy and mandate ...
At capacity, 70 per cent of students enrolled must have one parent with Hong Kong Permanent Resident status.
http://www.renaissance.edu.hk/content/policy

So if those Cat One kids were not rejected because of (1), then
the reason is probably (2), i.e. those kids do not have at least one parent who is a local resident.

May I know which ESF kinder?  As I know, hillside has very high successful rate.

I think high successful rate or not depends very much on the ratio of Cat. 1 students in an ESF Kindy as ESF Primary will first take the Cat. 1 students.   As long as the child's English is good, they will be offered a place.  Regarding the interview in SJS, the interview with parents was private and I didn't think it was an interview but instead an informative / question session with the vice-principle.
For RC, they only test the kids' English ability but not Chinese.  However, as they are not bound by the Cat. system, I believe they have a choice to pick the students they want.  Judging from my girl's kindy result (non-ESF), almost all (except one) Cat. 1 got SJS offer but not all getting RC offer.  I noted that those didn't get RC offers were the quiet one.  This is purely my observation.

RC test the English ability of kids during interview. Knowing Chinese or not is not a factor. There are Indians and westerners studying in RC, they don't know Chinese as well but got accepted.

Maybe I haven't explain that very clearly, in my kid's class, only 6 students are define as Cat 1(or ...
From your description, the situation seems to be as follows:-

There are 25 kids in the class, 6 of them are Cat One, so the remaining 19 must be Cat Two. In other words, around 1/4 of the class are Cat One, and 3/4 are Cat Two.

Almost everyone in the class had an interview with Renaissance, but only 1/4 of the class were given interviews with Shatin Junior, and this 1/4 are those 6 Cat One kids.

5 out of the 6 Cat One kids got offers from Shatin Junior, a high success rate, though some of them were rejected by Renaissance (probably because these kids don't know Chinese).

9 out of  the 19 Cat Two kids got offers from Renaissance, success rate is half-half, and they could not go to Shatin Junior because they weren't even given an interview.

11 kids (1 Cat One and 10 Cat Two) have no offers yet.

If we analyze the situation above, the Cat One kids are doing fine as most of them are through to Shatin Junior, but Cat Two kids are facing more difficulties, they either go to Renaissance or exit the ESF system altogether and go to other international schools or local schools.

This year SJS even NO interview can offer to most of the students in ESF kinder or sibling...

On the other hand,  as long as you are Cat 1, SJS will offer you an interview and place!
The two statements above seem to contradict each other.
