What is their teaching style?
Can parents communicate with teachers regularly?
What do you think is their standard of English and Chinese at your daughter's level?

Honestly speaking, being able to get accepted from among a huge list of SSCPS waiting list is not easy.  This school used to have a v. long waiting list.  Last yr, we received very favourable replies from the Principal of this school, however in the end we still failed to get acceptance letter.  End up, we chose SPPCS (st. paul's in Happy Valley) for my girl.  

While you won't want to give up sending letters to SSCPS, you should also prepare for other good options like SPPCS, and try to know more about this school rather than "dreaming" about other schools, which is more practical and realistic.  Practically speaking getting accepted finally from among the waiting list of int'l schools is also difficult.  Everywhere now in HK, the competition for schools is becoming extremely keen.

Thank you for your useful views and kind encouragement.
I've sent a 2-page letter.
I hope someone will now give up a place here as a result of recent announcement by a famous girls' school in Kowloon!

Both are good school.   

My friend's daughter studied at St. Paul primary before and she is now F.1 at St. Paul Secondary.    P.1's homework was not much, but when she was P.3 onwards, the homeworks are not less.   And, there were tests every Monday.   So, every Sunday they could only have half day's family day because she needed to go back home to prepare the tests.   And, the one year am and one year pm also made her difficult to continues her weekday hobbies with the same teachers.    She is a very polite girl and her character is very good.     Comparing to other traditional famious girl schools, I like St. Paul's the most because the girls are simpler.

My daughter is also on the waiting list of St. Stephen's Stanley.    The campus is very attractive!   The students study happily.   In my mind, it's a local international school.  Most people don't choose this school just because it's too far away.    Last year, a very smart boy from my daughter's kindergarten chose St. Stephen's instead of St. Paul co-ed because his parents don't like spoon feeding.

From what you said, I believe St. Stephen's should be more suitable for your daughter.    Write the letter!

Your girl is a great negotiator!

From your description, I would say SSCPS is more suitable for her character and her long list of hobbies.  Start writing letters to SSCPS.

I do not work in education and so I do not really know how to link my daughter's personalities to different schools except by asking for more information about the schools, make a "second best guess" and hope for the best.
My daughter has an independent character. She is cheerful and fun.
She likes singing, drawing, and dancing.
She also likes swimming, ice-skating, ballet and violin.
In her spare time, she likes to play with her baby brother.
I can see she is quite intelligent because she knows how to negotiate with me.
When she is thirsty, she would say, "I don't have anything to drink"(in English) instead of "I would like some orange juice please".
She likes learning Chinese.

Sorry, I forgot to put mark for the duck fed system for St Paul......... I think the homework is too less for p.1.... haha, so I put 2 to 3.   Cos' when I compare with my friend's daughter who is studying in Kei Wan primary school for P.1, she told me that one of the days of her girl 's homework is:
數學志堅補充60條應用題, 背中文問答五題and one page of Eng reader , so on……….
so I think Kei Wan should be ranked 8 to 9 marks for duck fed system... at least there is no need to recite any chinese or Eng passages so far for my girl.............

其實我諗而家d local schools 都比以前辦得好.
Most of the schools are different from what we were in the past.
E.g I knew a mom whose girl is studying in SH pm, she told me that the teachers are nice and workload is only a few for P.1.
Her girl enjoys school.
It’s different from what my friends who graduated from SH told me.
They were scared of the sisters and heavy workload when they were in primary.
My daughter only has 3 to 4 tasks a day, and 1 to 2 of them are corrections!
So I think the workload is light for P.1.
My friend’s daughter is in P.3, she told me that her girl can finish her work within 1 hr everyday.
I think it really depends, some kids just cannot concentrate and do homework slowly.
I know a mom’s kid needs an hr to finish just one page of copy book at home, but when she sent him to 補習社, he can finish all the homework within an hr…………
Dictation is only once a week, either Chinese or Eng.
Eng only has less than ten short sentences and Chinese may be one or two chapters.

題外話, 其實我發覺d父母同仔女選小學, 都有d base on 自己的童年感覺, 好似我friend studied from SSCPS P.1 till SSC F.7, she told me that she will let her kid study in 基灣(東區一間超多功課的名校), she said that she didn’t want her kid to be as free as her and want her to be busier.
And one of my SSC old friends enjoy the freedom that he had in the old days, he wanted to send his son to Victoria International School for Primary………… 當年SSC 真係幾好玩, 但多freedom , 學生academic 差距大.
自由好在乎個人懂不懂得利用, 懶者愈懶, 勤者會善用於多思考和學習課本外的知識.
Good school?
Bad school?
Really depends on the kids’ personality as well…..

Only PTH is used as the teaching medium in the PTH lessons.
But u can choose PTH as one of the interest group for one of the lessons on Long Weekend Sat.
Some ppl said that using PTH to teach Chinese is good for
writing and speaking PTH in the future.
Some ppl said that using Cantonese to teach Chinese is better for kids to understand the difficult vocabularies.
E.g when the teacher needs to explain 寒冷to kids, she just needs to say 好凍in Cantonese and the kids can understand that in one second, but to explain it in PTH to kids is more difficult.

Since you got offer from St. Paul's already and still on waiting list for St. Stephen's Stanley, I would say you'd better try to visit St. Paul's campus, talk to the teachers etc. to see if you like the school.  Last sat & sun St. Paul's has an open day which serves as a great chance for parents to explore about the school.  St. Paul's is planning to build a new building behind the existing facet, however it will take a few years from approval to completion of new building so your kid might have graduated from P6 already.

agreed with your view.  Failure in Chinese, no way to HK government higher posts .  Chinese becomes important in the world, it may become the 2nd international language following English.

- I have calculated the cost of the school fee of St Stephen's, it's nearly 10000 per month from p.1 to p.5, p.6 is even more expensive.......... I have a younger boy.   And I would prefer to save money for my kids to study aboard when they finish their secondary school.
-In the past, before it changed to DSS, SSC was only a band two secondary school.  I have seen so many teenagers troubles in a co edu school.......... e.g. some girls used cutters to make tatoo of the boys' names on their hands, arms or even legs........ u know the artress Yuen Nem Ming? She was my friend (I knew her in F.3)'s brother (who was only in P.5 at that time)'s girl friend!  I understand I cannot stop my girl from the love affair, but I just saw too much and thought that I couldn't handle that for so early..........
But I think SSCPS is good for :
-more exposure to music and atheletics
-fantastic campus (I think it's also why students are more easily to fall in love there, haha)
-Good Eng medium
-The boarding program? good for independence but..... it's the catalyst of love affairs....... in the old days, most of the boarders have love affairs.........
-co edu.  Actually, I also worry that my girl will turn into a tom boy or doesn't know how to deal with boys when she grows up from a girls ' school......... some of my friends who were from famous girls' school, e.g. SH, True light, St Paul are still single..............
Everything has 2 sides........ u have to consider which side you can accept more.   After the diaster of making decision of primary school for my girl last year, I understand that there is no perfect school.   And you will never know if your daughter can fit into the school that you choose for her.   But so lucky, St Paul's just turned out as a school that fit her and me.  So good luck!  I think both are good school but u really need to think abt the drawbacks of each one....
