According to a friend who is a DGJS P3 parent, the school is actually not pushy at all. They have only two examinations a year. Each exam includes only one session for English, Chinese and Maths. They've never had any exam after long holidays like Christmas, Chinese New Year or Easter. It is the parents who are proactive and let their girls participate in a wide spectrum of extra-cirricular activities. Every year, the girls get numerous prizes in different sorts of inter-school competitions and only those who have got champion can go onto the stage on prize presentation day.
There is no doubt that DGS girls are smart in general. However, only few of them are really brilliant in the society. If you look at the notable alumni, many other elite schools are actually far better than DGS.
Last year, my daughter got 1 winner and 1 first runner in School Speech Festival. This year, she got 2 winners and 1 second runner. She is not studying in DGJS.
While I agree with you that girls are smart and confident from DGJS, the effort by the kids, parents and teachers is the key for success.
DGJS provides a good environment in hardware and software to train her girls. Girls, parents and teachers of it cannot slow down even a minute. When you admire their rewards, please don't forget their effort.
Your girl is excellent, may I know which school she attends?

My girl's session only has 1 dgjs girl. My girl got the champion but the dgjs girl didn't have any placing.
I think it also depends on the preference of the judge as well.
My understanding is DGJS has always viewed the HK Schools Speech Festival as an opportunity to allow its' students to perform in a public arena so that they gain the confidence and also the enjoyment of public speaking. As previous post mentioned, majority of girls have been selected by DGJS to represent the school and therefore scheduled rehearsals took place at school during lunch breaks over a 2 months period. This is all completely Free of Charge. For those who haven't been chosen could elect to join the competition themselves but received no training whatsoever from the school so I assume they might choose to join outside organizations to help them. As for the girls chosen by the school, the rehearsals was more than sufficient to enable them to take part in the event having learned the necessary skills. I cannot speak for everyone, but we never pay any extra costs to outside organizations. It is true that most DGJS girls scored very high in the competition because the school trained them well. Not all DGJS girls were placed in the Top 3 in their respective group as this depends on the "luck of the draw" and the adjudicator's preferences. As parents, I have to admit it is the most enjoyable experiences to see your child performing confidently and coming out really enjoying themselves. It is NOT the most important thing to be in the Top 3 but the sheer experiences of having this wonderful opportunity.
