Dear changmum,
For some unknown reason, I couldn't find your PM. I am now sharing some of my thoughts about the P.6 placement based upon my own experience.
My child was accepted by a DSS school in late March and therefore we didn't have to bother the 'Luky-draw' game. From what I observed during the school hunt, I can conclude that the chance of getting in your desired school, weather it is a DSS or subsidy school:
70% comes from your academic performance, ECA awards ... somethings tangible or what your child has already achieved before the application.
30% comes from the interview performance. This is a very vital part in the entire process. I found few outstanding students(in terms of academic performance or ECA awards) fail to get in anyone of their desired schools simply because of their poor interview performance.
I am not going to share the interview questions that my child has come across here. APSKT teachers are doing excellent job on summarizing all the questions which collected from the past. They will let all the P6 students to have adequate preparation, starting the Summer course, before they attend the school interview. That's the reason why I asked if you'd sign up the APSKT summer course this year. It would be wise to get ready as early as possible. My advice is never ask your child to memorize word by word(except certain personal info. such as self-introduction) on preparing the interview. It would just cause your child more anxious and degrade his/her performance. I found that most of the interviewer are interested in confident students who possess strong communication skills, someone who can clearly convey his / her own ideas. It is not their interest to waste time on hearing recitations.
I understand it's hard for a 11-year old to do that but trust me, let the school prepare the interview for them. Just encourage your child to be pro-active in answering questions. Time after time, he/she will be more comfortable to talk to teachers or principals of other schools.
If you are willing to tell me what is your desired school here. Maybe I could check with some old students who had interviews with it. But that's not a promise. OK, before I end. Good luck!
