Are the academic results of Yew Chung's Secondary really impressive as compared with other IS?

I also want to know more about Secondary section of YC.  I have visited YC's website, it mentioned their good results in both GCSE and IGCSE.  I wonder why many BK parents only appreciate their Kg and Primary section.  Actually I am not the parent of YC, I just want to know more.  Also, there are not many Int'l schools which provided GCSE and IGCSE exam now.  Most of the IS are MYP or IB diploma.

echo_seng,

Yew Chung kindergarten puts enough emphasis on discipline. But please bear in mind creativity is very important at this stage. Yew Chung teachers are tactful and experienced enough not to set too restrictive boundaries to limit children's exploration and imagination.

My kid joined 2-year-old class at K29 campus, and continued with "main-stream" class from 3 to 5 years old (not international stream). Therefore, his had a good foundation in Chinese, but English was not as good as those kids in international stream. But kids pick up English quickly after they join the YC primary school.

wisekid2007,

Thank you for your praise to my kid. I believe your son is more outstanding.

Do you think YC kindergarten puts enough emphasis on kids' discipline? Some parents feel that it doesn't really care about this. That concerns me a lot! I guess your kids love going to school, don't ...

Yew Chung's philosophy is to educate every child irrespective of their learning ability and talent.  That's why they don't pick children from the interview.

I think you need to "divide" the discussions of secondary school from kindergarten.

To a certain extend there must be some basic skills that a child has to have. Yew Chung is supposed to be an English medium school. I do not care what nationality or ethnicity the students are. But if a school teaches in English, then should teachers and students be all be able to speak good English?

We are not talking about an additional language. But we are talking English, as a medium of learning. Without basic English skills, how can anyone learn Math, Science, History, as these are all taught in English. Homework are in English, exams are in English.

As far as I see, many students at Yew Chung are not even in par in tems of English with peers in local English secondary school. I am not even talking about elite schools like DGS. Many students at Yew Chung hardly made it to local English secondary school BECAUSE they have been considered not suitable to learn in English. However, just because their parents are able to pay the premium, these kids now are now study in an international school, which normally requires even higher skills than most local English medium schools.

Can you see the problem here? Students and parents are given false hope: Do not worry too much if you got an F in English at HKCEE. Do not feel sad if your children can hardly make it to any English medium secondary school. Come to us and we provide education in English. Wow, isn't that what everyone is dreaming for? But, hey, wait, have parents thought of how such students handle the curriculum?

Yew Chung's philosophy is to educate every child irrespective of their learning ability and talent.  That's why they don't pick children from the interview.  They operate as a 1st come 1st serve basis, and this is one way to show sincerity of the potential parents towards the school.  So it seems like the acceptance rate is 100%.

My kid was in Yew Chung from kindergarten through primary. In my opinion, Yew Chung is not commercial. Some other IS are more commercial.

The feeling about YC is if there is another choice for international school, i will not choose YC ... It is too commercial and acceptance rate for students are almost 100%, that means different "level ...

回覆 12# echo_seng 的文章

I worked in YC for few yrs ago.
Yes, the kg and primary sections are much better than secondadry.  Especially kg, teachers are patients with love and some of them are really caring about kids.  This is why it can run effectively just mainly because of the quality of teachers.

On the other hand, YC is also a $$$-concerned school and lots of parents know, the acceptance rate is almost 100%

I worked in secondary section which accepted many transferred-in students all the year. This was why the students are mixed with under performers and children with special needs. While they did't have a well resourced support for such students it was a problem for good students.
But I knew that the kindergarten and the primary section is very good.

I worked as a counselor in yew chung. It is like a school for rich people's children. Some are too naive without survival skills. Some are playboys and playgirls. Immature than their counterparts of same age but generally very naive and peaceful.
The combination of students are very mixed. True.
Only a few teachers that I appreciated.
