本人即將在年底移民 LA, 但對於美國的幼兒教育制度毫無認識, 請教各位以下問題:-

1. 香港有 2 歲的幼兒 BB 班, 美國有嗎?
2. 公立? 私人? 學費多少?
3. 全日制? 半日制? 通常由幾點至幾點?
4. 抑或有 Playgroup? 親子一齊上堂? 學費又多少?
5. 請問美國 6 歲前的教育制度是如何安排?
6. 孩子 6 歲讀 Grade 1 時需否提早報名或面試?

Info and form about Social Security Card
http://www.ssa.gov/online/ss-5.html
They will mail the card to your address. This is not a travel document, so when your relatives receive it, they really don't need to mail it to you. It'll be good if they can tell you what the number is. Sooner or later, you need to memorize this because it's very important like the HK ID card number in HK.

To apply for a Reentry Permit, you need a Form I-131 Application for Travel Document which you can get online at www.uscis.gov. Read the instructions carefully and if you have any other questions, feel free to post it here.

I suggest to apply for an ID, not a driver license this time because you'll be here for only 2 weeks. You can apply for it at the local DMV office. Many of them allow you to make an appointment online ahead of time. I think the office cloest to you should be Pasadena. You can check on www.dmv.ca.gov

Hello!!! 好久無上網跟您們閒聊, 孩子的病好了嗎?

這陣子忙於為長子申辦明年九月小一入學的事宜, 忙得不可開交.
(雖然我們明年便移民, 不會在港讀小一, 但世事難料, 報名當作一個後備, 以防萬一)

有關移民的時間表, 現階段打算下個月 11 月會先來報到, 全家逗留 1 - 2 星期, 申辦入籍 / 睇屋 / 睇學校的事宜, 然後回港, 待明年 8 月才正式移民. 請問您們有關以下的問題:-

1. 抵達美國後, 需申領哪些証件 / 文件?
    (綠咭? Social Security Number Card?)
2. 向哪個機構申請呢?
3. 由申辦到取得文件, 需時多久?

    (因我想儘量縮短在美逗留的時間)

I don't know any, but when I did a search at Yahoo using "parenting forums", it shows some links. You can give those a try.

Too bad that all the swimming classes at the current school are full for the next session already. Need to look for annother school or skip the winter.

有關游水提防著涼, 我媽媽教我一個好好的方法:

孩子游完水, 準備上水前, 您給他倒一壺/杯/瓶 [熱水] 飲用, 熱水的定義是 [熱] 但不燙口, 但不是暖水, 暖水不夠令身體溫熱, 最佳測試溫度的方法是成人喝一口, 只要不燙口就可以了. 飲了熱水後, 身體 [裡面] 和暖了, 上水後繼績飲, 您再為他包毛巾, 便不怕著涼了. 我沿用了此方法多年, 效果非常好. 有些孩子不喜歡白水, 可轉飲熱朱古力.

I have to type in English today because I don't have much time. Anyway, yes, I also heard that swimming is good for asthmatic children. My husband took my son to a swimming class (those parent-baby class) last summer. This summer my son is old enough to go by himself. He likes swimming/playing with water. Thank you for your advice. I think I'll let him continue to take the class even in winter since it's an indoor warm-water pool. We just have to be extra fast and careful to wrap him up with towel when he comes out from the water.

My son got asthma from my father side. My dad and many relatives have it. The Pedi diagnosed this because general cough medicine seems not have any effect on my son. He will cough for weeks and weeks. He did the allergy test but found nothing. We switched many Pedi before. Finally one Pedi was able to hear some wheezing while my son blew a feather. Sometimes I am not sure whether he really has asthma. The Pedi said she is treating him as if he has asthma because of my family history.

Fortunately my son is not the very serious type. He is just very sensitive to the weather change and cold drink/food. He doesn't have any difficulty in sports. The Pedi asks us to give him the preventive inhalor called Qvar throughout the winter only. During summer, I give it to him only when he is sick. It seems under control.

culver, 您坐月坐得怎麼樣? 家中有了新成員, 忙得不可開交, 但也要留意大女的情緒, 以免她以為弟弟 [ 搶走 ] 了媽媽. 您大女病了, 晚上有回家睡覺嗎? 還是在保母處留宿? 祝囡囡早日康復.

mrschao & culver, 我聽人說, [改善] 哮喘病情的其中一個辦法是游水, 我好友的兒子自三歲起被診斷患有哮喘, 要食藥聞氣, 父母親很是心痛, 醫生建議游水對病情有幫助, 自此 (3 歲起 ) 學游水,就算冬天也照游 (室內暖水池), 從不間斷,  病情漸好轉, 後來哮喘更斷了尾. 現在已九歲了, 身體非常健康, 并因泳術了得, 加入了學校的泳隊. 我長子無哮喘, 但我也安排了他三歲半時開始學游水, 希望加強其心/肺/氣管功能,  這年半以來, 身體也尚算強健, 就算染病, 很多時毋須看醫生食藥, 會自動痊癒.

My elder daughter is also suspected to have asthma, but I am not very sure.... because I myself had asthma before and my daughter does not have classic symptoms like mine (ie. wheezing, diff to exercise) and she seems too young to be "diagonsed". How about your son? Do you use preventive medicine (forgot the name.... Pulmocute?) for him?

How's your son health-wise and school-wise? Hope he is healthy and happy again. My elder daughter also caught a cold 3 weeks ago and is still coughing on and off now.... so poor that she cannot have very intimate contact with her little brother because we are afraid of any infection.

I think being a full-time mom is really not easy. I believe I can hardly do that, even now I am on maternity leave and stay home whole day, I still have to send my daughter to the nanny's home after her morning school so that I can take care of the newborn.

呀，你幫你細仔找day care/pre-school時要問清楚他們的sick policy，有些學校很嚴，少少病都不可以返學，因怕傳染給其他小朋友，其實這是好的，不過對於我這些在職媽媽來説，真的不太方便。

Hello!!! 哈! 原來我們三人均擁有同一個共通點 ------ 兩名子女.

從前, 當我還是一名在職媽媽時, 由於須上班, 一有餘閑, 我很用心及很有耐性去教導長子, 長子兩歲時, 便能唸出十多首唐詩, 我亦很 enjoy 去當一個媽媽的身份, 願望是生三個孩子 ( 因我本身也是三兄妹) ; 但現在全職在家看顧兩名兒子, 反而覺得有心無力, 無耐性, 動輒發怒, 對孩子咆哮, 事後卻又後悔不已, 更因而情緒低落. 我老公工作非常忙碌, 經常離港不在家, 教養孩子的責任, 大部份落在我的身上, 好大壓力.

有時, 我會想如果只生一個孩子, 可能會 handle 得好一些.

昨晚幼子鼻塞, 睡不安寧, 由於他跟我同睡, 我也睡不好. 今早更流出綠色的鼻涕, 我想是在學校給傳染了. 剛開學四天, 即染病, 唉! 希望這一年上學能順順利利.

我有時也control不到自己temper,向對仔女發脾氣，甚至會打他們手仔,事後也跟你一樣會很後悔，覺得應該可以處理得好一點。大仔現在差不多四嵗，比較懂事，可以跟他講道理。亞女剛兩嵗，trouble-two, 是一個大喊包，又硬頸，很難搞。

其實你已做得好好，由這個forum可以看得出你是一個很疼和很関心自己小朋友的好媽媽。不要給自己太大壓力，全職媽媽真的不易做，我很佩服你願意為這個家放棄事業，不是人人做得到，也不是每個家庭有這個經濟能力，這方面你是幸運的！

我剛搬了家，大部分傢私都是IKEA的，比較便宜而且款式不太老土。

今日是幼子弟弟 bb 班 (nursery) 首日開學, 正常的上課時間是三小時, 但開學初期, 本週只返一小時, 還須家長陪伴. 總結今日的評語 : [ 沮喪 ]. 還有四天須陪他, 但願明天會更好.

唉! 自上年六月辭工後作一個全職媽媽, 帶孩子的日子過得不易, 加上早前外籍女傭突然離職, 好無助, 現在雖然來了個新女傭, 但事無大小, 又要重新再教過, 再適應過,  感覺好累. 這個暑假, 自己好像患了燥狂病一樣, 時常對孩子發脾氣, 但事後又感到非常後悔, 有時, 見到長子發脾氣的兇惡相貌, 語調神態, 完全是自己的翻版, 我就恨自己. 唉! 呻完啦! 無端端發嘮叨, 有無悶親您呢.

坐月期間, 小心保重身體.
