Hi Lilo,

My daughter was admitted to K2 in SKH next year.  may I ask a few question?
a) How many girls are there in one class?
b) Does the school stress on discipline? If anyone is naughty, what will the teachers do?
c) Do they have enough English and Potunghua training? also, do they have enough time to practice communication in English and Chinese or participate in shows?
d) My daughter is very attention seeking. Will the teachers have enough attention for individual child?

Sorry! May be too many questions, but I need to choose between SKH, Victoria and St. Stephen's Girls Kindergarten this year.  I know all the 3 schools have their pros and cons, and it's difficult to decide.

Thanks a lot for your help!

Cinder.

Hi Cinder!

There are around 10 girls in each class.  I don't know the reason(s) but SKH admits more boys than girls each year, around 2 boys : 1 girl.   Nonetheless, the ratio of girls and boys may change in K2 as some students would go to SSKG or St Joseph or CCKG.

Yes, SKH emphasises on discipline.  My girl said they are asked to raise their hands before answering/ asking Qs, to line up to go to toilets, etc. but not very strict at the beginning of the school year.  They allow children to get use to rules.

For the naughty guys, my girl said that one of the teachers would bring the kids to a corner and talked to them.  One of the parents said that the teacher had once called her to see whether there was any special thing happened in the family which might make her boy fought in the class. (It happened that the little brother of the boy was sick and mammy had paid less attention to the boy!)  My first hand experience was that a boy lost his temper and 掃晒all the kitchen toys on the floor.  The teacher quickly went to the kitchen corner and said gentlely to the boy that she was unhappy becasue the children did not teasure the toys. The boy felt sorry when he knew that the teacher was unhappy.  Other children helped him to pick up the toys.  After thanking all the children for the help, the teacher hold the hand of the boy and went to a corner and talked to him.  I couldn't hear what she said but later I saw her gave a big hug to the boy and vice versa.  The boy came out with a happy face.

They got English lessons (around 20-30 mins) four times a week.  Starting from the 2nd term of K1, they have Putonghua lesson once every week.  For show and tell, I think there should be such arrangement in K2.  Nonetheless, every now and then my girl that they are asked to do some "show and tell".  For practising communication in English and PTH, I think they often have chance to speak in English as whenever they meet the English teacher (in the toilets, at the staircase, lining up,etc.) , they would turn to the English channel as the English teacher would only talk to them in English.  I once wondered whether the English teacher knows Cantonese (the headmistress told me that she does know Cantonese but won't talk to the children in Cantonese so as not to confuse them.)  For PTH, I'm not sure as my girl has just started the PTH lesson.

Yes, the teachers will have enough attention to each individual child.  It sounds amazing but it's true.  My girl didn't like English lesson at the beginning.  One of the teachers would sit next to her during the English lesson.  My girl said that this made her feel comfortable/safe and not so scare.  I saw some kids (with tears) sat on the teacher's lap.  The teachers, even the headmistress and 主任, know the names of the children within weeks!  They could tell the characters of each child.  No need to worry about your kid even she's "fond of" attention seeking.

Ha!ha! I studied in St Stephen from K2 to F.7.  Originally, I have planned to enroll my girl in SSKG in K2.  However, after my girl have studied in SKH for a few months, I dropped the idea as my girl really enjoys her school and the teachers are very very good.

Hope you won't mind my long reply.

Hi Lilo,

Thanks so much for your precious detailed reply!  I can now have a concrete picture of SKH.:

However, may I know which school you prefer your girl to go to?  If you sacrifice SSKG, will you be afraid that she'll have less chance to go to St. Stephen's Girls Primary?

I intend to send my girl to St Stephen's for primary school.  As it is a subsidized school, the admission is based on how many "points" you have.  As I am an old girl, my girl will have 20 points.  On the contrary, no point would be given to graduates of SSKG.  For these few years, even with 20 points, there is no guarantee that a seat would be given.  Hence, whether I send my girl to SSKG, I may need to "knock the door".  As for the "knocking door" round, I know a few graduates from SKH could be admitted to SSGPS at this stage while some graduates of SSKG are "kicked out".

Hi Lilo,

Thanks a lot!   Is your daughter studying in SKH in Central or Mt. Butler? If she is in Mt. Butler, then probably she may be a classmate of my daughter.

Do you think SSGPS will take preference on students of SKH to those in Victoria?  Some people said the headmistress of SKH is a committee member of SKH Society, and I think it will give more chance for the students in SKH to enter those primary schools with SKH background while 'knocking the door'.  Is it true?

my girl is studying in Central SKH.  The Mt Butler site is much more spacious.  The envrionment there is much better than the Central site.

I don't know whether preferene would be given to SKH students by SSGPS but I really hope so. My friend whose daughter studied in Vic told me that it would be "difficult" for Vic students to "knock door", not because of their standard but the school is relutant to write very good reference letter for the students as the school prefers them to stay in the Vic primary.  I don't know whether all Vic Kinders would be the same.  My friend's daughter studied in Causeway Bay Vic and finally ended up with Vic primary school.  The school is good and caring but the school fee is very expensive.

Hi Lilo,

Oh! What a pity I can't meet you in SKH!  I totally agree with you that Victoria is good and their teachers are caring, but the school fee is.........well, it's worthwhile if it leads to her good future.  Actually, they need that expensive school fee as they employ many native English teachers.  However, I found that 70% of the students go to Vic. Kinder, but I want my girl to go to traditional school like St. Stephen's Girls.

By the way, may I be so greedy as to ask one more question?...Do you know whether the reference letter from SKH is good from past history?

Hi Lilo,

When you said some of your friends' girls from SKH KG are admitted by SSGPS by "knocking door", are they SSGC old girls?

I have a little sharing and hope you won't mind.

One of my friends got the same plan as you do. She didn't send her daughter back to SSGK, as the little girl had familiarized with her first kindergarten and it was a good one. She didn't get a place with 20 points, and wasn't lucky enough to win the lucky draw. When she tried to knock the door, she was asked a few times why she didn't send her girl back. At the end, she couldn't get a place.

Hi Chingchingmom!

Thanks for your sharing.  of course I won't mind.  I have also heard some cases similar to your friend's case (may be the same case as I remember that you are also an old girl of SSGC.)  The mothers of those girls who are finally admitted to SSGPS are not all old girls!  Those successful parents remind me that the No. 1 rule of the game for "knocking the door" is those with relation would have a greater chance!  Unfair but true. Hence, I am not 100% sure that my girl could get a place if I knock the door.  As sending my girl to study at SSKG also won't guarantee a place, I perfer to status quo.

You have very good memory

With the low birth rate in 2002 and 2003, I guess your girl will have a greater chance of getting into SSGPS. Wish you and your girl good luck!

Hi Lilo,

Thanks a lot! Your informations are really useful!

As you said you prefer status quo, do you find SSKG a good kinder?  As some ppl said that the admittance rate from SSKG to SSPGSis very low, do you know what kind of primary schools will they go to if the girls cannot go to SSPGS?

Yea! We are lucky as the birth rate in 2002-2003 is very low.

Chingchingmom :

Thanks.  I remember that you have mentioned somewhere that you went to the open day last Nov.  I really wanted to go but was out-town during that period and missed the opening day and the banquet!  I have longed for that occassion for a while as some of my classmates had flied back from overseas to join the gathering.  Would you mind telling me which year you graduated?  I graduated in 1987 (F.7).

Cinder:

Yes, of course SSKG is a good kinder.  My two years spent there were very happy.  I could still remember my days/ my classmates/teachers and nearly everything of SSKG after 30+ years! Because of my own considerations, I didn't enroll my girl for SSKG.  For the information I gathered, the admittance rate from SSKG to SSPGS is not that low but not 100%.  My impression is that SSPGS should take around 70-80% of SSKG grils.  (of course some girls go to other schools like St Paul's Co-ed/DGS.)  One of the girls I know who has not been admitted to SSPGS goes to St. Clares as her mother didn't like the school allocated by the lucky draw (seems to be 潮商 but no very sure). The others go to the school allocated by the lucky draw.  I think one or two go to 英皇同學會which is also a good school in C&W District as advised by my ppl working in EMB.

HI Lilo,

Then it seems that if I want my girl to go to SSPGS, she should enter SSKG, am I right? but a lot of ppl. said if I'm not in net 11, the chance of going to SSPGS will be very low!     Wow! I need to decide whether to register SSKG before 26.4.07!!

BTW,may I know the full name of EMB?
