Re: St. Catherine VS Anfield

Dear Jenna Mom,

These are two obviously different routes. It depend on where you expect your kid to go. Do you think your child will go to a local school or an international school?

You may take my earlier posting about admission to international school as a reference:

$10,500 should be 1 month deposit + 1 month school fee and misc.

Hi Fattymon,
Yes,it is for 1month deposit + 1 month school fee and service fee. But it is non-refundable and non-transferable if, subsequently, the child fails to attend school.

Therefore, when I decide to pay the amount, I am sure that I will let my daughter to study in Anfield. :

Re: St. Catherine VS Anfield

Of course St. Catherine's. No matter which route you take, it should be SC.

Anfield is a fairly newly established school, many times the primary schools that are well known, have never even heard of Anfield.

There are little people enrolled in Anfield, therefore limited activities, and facilities and events within the school. The qualifications of the teachers are also questionable... some of them are EXCELLENT, like Teacher Robert for the playgroups, and Prep 1.  A couple of the ladies are quite good in Kindergarten.

However, in general, SC is the way to go, it's the top notch school in Kowloon for kindergarten.
In the past 2 years, their chinese curriculum has strengthened big time, and their school's name..... no matter WHERE you decide to go after kindergarten, seeing your child is from SC, it's already added marks.

(My child went to Anfield, and many of my friends through my recommendation.) However, in my opinion, the adventure in Anfield ends when your child hits Kindergarten. Anfield does not have the capability to be a school that can give a child all the experience in a kindergarten should have b/c of the limited admission. Not b/c they don't intake them, people simply don't choose it b/c their tuitioin is expensive, and it's not a top name brand school at all.
Just my opinion. GO TO SC. A lot of people want your spot......

Re: St. Catherine VS Anfield

Hi Pianokc,
thank you for all your comments...
actually, this is really hard for me to decide which school should go for my daughter.
as both school are totally diff. one is local and other one is international...
the problem is me and my husband may not able to offer a lot of times for my daughter and sit down with her on all the homeworks, exam... etc as both of us are so busy on works..   that is the reason why i decided to pay the deposit to Anfield.   And of course i do concern SC is a good international what everyone said...
no matter what's...   believe i do find a good tunnel to put my question to baby kingdom then i can get more comments from other mom and dad...
and i will make my final decision in next couple months...   thanks so much... :  :

Re: St. Catherine VS Anfield

jennachan,
1)My main concern is for language training. It is different from your point.

2)First of all, I prefer my child to study Eng+Mandarin during kinder in order to train up her language. Therefore, I limit my choice to the Kinder that only teach in Eng+Mandarin (The school environment is really only Eng & Mandarin). My first choice is KCIS+KCS. However, as my daughter needs to take nap in the afternoon, I then choose between KCIS and Anfield.

2) There are 2-3 native English speakers in a class (Anfield, KCIS), and I prefer this arrrangment rather than 1 native eng + 1 native Mand. I believe the child could learn language via the communication among the teachers. I find my daughter will pay attention/is curious to the conversation among two people.

3) Anfield offered morning section to my daughter, and there is school bus to the estate I lived. I prefer my daughter to study morning class. It is an important point when I consider whether to let my daughter to study in Anfield. If the offer is afternoon section, I may drop it.

4) I have joined the playgroup of Anfield and is satisfied with the experience of the teachers. It is my own experience to judge the school, not from others' mouth.

5) I prefer the school in small size  (not much students). With small school, I think the relationship between teacher and student is very close, and also among students.

I found that you mentioned you may not be able to offer a lot of times for your daughter for homeworks etc. If it is because of this reason to put your daughter in International school, it may not be right. You may need to pay even more attention on her discipline, join school activities etc. if she study in international school.

I expect to spend more time for my daughter on teaching her Chinese, tell her chinese story, tell her more Chinese traditional culture etc.

Re: St. Catherine VS Anfield

Hello jennachan and sks,
100% agree with sks viewpoints.
Never compare apple with orange.
Also, screening useful information is more important than gathering information.
Everybody chasing for local "popular" primary school should not go to IS because it does not train your children up to meet the such requirement.
Being one of parents in Anfield, I fully understand it is not a famous school in mainstream before my admission.
From my experience in so-called Int'l kindergartens run by local people, I can totally feel the differences.
It is easy to find well-educated and good experience teachers in many famous kindergarten but it is lucky to meet good teachers with "heart" that parents can also feel.
sks also mentioned an important point: never think about sending the children to IS then you can be trouble free. It is 100% wrong!
From my experience, I have to pay much more time and participation in my daughter's school life in Anfield. They have many opportunities to let parents to get involved from parents' orientation, outings, sports day, X'mas concert. I can know more about my daughter's school life through the interactions with principal, teachers, her classmates and other parents. That are wonderful experiences that you can grow up with your children.

Re: St. Catherine VS Anfield

As one of Anfield parent, I totally agree with oooray! .

Every morning, I feel that I'm sending my son to his "second home"!  They provide lots of activities and adventures for the kids.  They won't push kids to do somethings that is beyond their capabilities.  They will help kids to build up their confidence.  Actually, the quality of its graduates is good so that they are welcomed by IS elementary school.  On the other hand, Anfield is not a good choice if your kid is going to the main stream school.  I can't deny that St.Cat. is a very good Eng. kinder if LOCAL school is your target.

Second, I feel that IS parents are required to put more time on the kids.  You have to grow TOGETHER with your kids.  Participation plays a very important role.  IS are different from local schools.  You may find band 1 to band 5 students in a school.  e.g. as famous as HKIS, some kids will take drugs; others are accepted by grade 1 university, e.g. Harvard.  You have to guide your kids all the way long.  Whether he will go into jail or top university  totally depends on parents!

Re: St. Catherine VS Anfield

Hello Fattymom,
I believe most Anfield parents could share the same feelings and no regret by sending children here because our little ones do enjoy their school life.
It is somehow impossible to share verbally to those who have never experienced.
(Dear SC and Kentville followers, please don't waste your time to challenge me. I am not persuading anybody that which shool is better. Enjoy your trip towards top local schools!)

Re: St. Catherine VS Anfield

Pianokc,

I can't agree with you.

In fact, I faced the same 'dilemma' 4 years ago. My son got admitted by St. Catherine and Anfield for K.1. At that time, my choice was 'easy' in the sense that if I want him to study in int'l school for his primary education, I should choose Anfield. If I want him to study in local primary, my choice should be St. Catherine.

At the end, I chose Anfield as I decided the "international school route" for my son's education.

I don't think Anfield is 'weaker' than St. Catherine. They are totally apple and orange that you can't directly compare. My son never studies in St. Catherine so I can't say any thing about it. But my son did study in Anfield for 3 years (from Prep- programme to K.2) and therefore I think I'm in a good position to comment. Similar to the other Anfield parents, we (my son & I) were  happy with Anfield. I like it is small and therefore the environment is cozy, the teachers/staff are friendly. The principal (at that time) could greet my son by his name, every morning. And, I could see my son learn a lot in Anfield. He started learning phonics (letterland) since he was 2.5 years old in Prep-program, also Mandarin. Now, he is in Yr. 2 in an int'l school and his English and Mandarin are both above average. Which, I think Anfield gave him a solid foundation academically. Also, he learned good attitude and manner from Anfield.

Re: St. Catherine VS Anfield

Hello happybobo,
Sorry for my late response. My wife chose
Anfield and Tutor . After visiting them, we have decided to send my daughter to Anfield.
I would not say Tutor is no good (good facilities, teachers are nice) but personally prefer Anfield at that moment.
(Most Teacher we met in Tutor were ABC. That's what we did conern at that moment. But now, i feel "Heart" is much  more important than "Color"! Anfield has some Indian Teachers but I feel they are very good!)

Re: St. Catherine VS Anfield

All,

I think the following assumption is incorrect.

Anfield -> international school.
St. Catherine -> local primary school.

I know many St. Catherine's students entered international schools included SJS, RC, Beacon Hill after K2.

My daughter is also studying in St. Catherine now and got a place in RC Year 1.

I would like to say St. Catherine is a good school indeed.  The teachers won't request kids to do or learn something out of kids' capabilities.  In K1, kids need not write any letters or Chinese characters.  All kids are encouraged to present in the front and read more books at home.  Most of students feel very unhappy if they cannot go to schools. I can see that kids do enjoy the school life in St. Catherine.

Actually I think it is quite difficult to learn Chinese characters.  It is a good start to have some foundation of Chinese in kindergarten stage.  Then, it is easier to learn more Chinese even though our kids are studying in international schools afterwards.
