actually, i don't think it's useful to apply the primary school, u better to ask for more recommendation letter such as principal......teacher......will be more useful

我都想請教下各位叩門既野,校長推薦信係咪妳有咁既要求,學校都會比,而且千篇一律個FORMAT,咁咪好似冇咩用?
至於課外活動,好似話要公開認可考試証書,普通課外活動班既証書係冇咩用,咁一個小朋友5,6歲點有考咁多個認可既公開試呢??

If time and resources allow, more certificates are always better than nothing. As most school accept portfolio of candidates. If you do not have any certs, then the portfolio is rather empty.

My girl has gone thru' the following Eng Exam since age 5:

Cambridge Prestarter & Starter (exam in shengzhen organised by her school because in HK, kids need to reach age 6 to attend the starter exam), now sit in the cambridge mover class and wait for age 6 to attend the test.

AQA ESOL English Test (Foundation - Oral only and Jet One, 4 subjects) - no age requirement but Jet One is harder than Cambridge Starter, it is meant for P2-3 students, however need to do composition.

yes, the letters are more or less the same but think of a kids with letter and another without a principal's reference letter, if you are to choose, you will prefer the one with letter. I would say, it is not very outstanding but it is necessary.

Other certificates (no matter those recognised ones or not, it is important to show to the school that the parents are keen in giving the best education and opportunities to the child. Most school likes parents to share the responsibility to make their student successful. If there is no public cert, try the private ones even without reputation...but easier to get...consider a singing contest, or piano contest in a small estate in the distanced area, or in your own area town hall, building if there is any. You may get reference letters from your kid's putonghua teacher, English teacher, swimming coach, gym coach, piano teacher etc etc....participate in the colouring competitions to at least get some cert of merit or cert of participation.

It seems too much but in order to make yr kid more competitive than the others, you ought to get him/her well prepared, especially they were not accepted in the first round of interviews....

This is simply my personal opinion, sorry for writing too much.

Thanks for your advice. Your advice is the one that I want to know. However, can you tell me where do you send your girl to study Cambridge Prestarter & Starter course, because I cannot find 1 school to teach kid below 5 and send them to Shenzhen to do the test. As I know York's student will do like this. Is your girl studying in York?

Therefore, which school in HK can provide AQA ESOL English course. If I want my son to take this examination, he should learn the course first, am I right?

Yes, my daugher participated in the exam together with York's students. She studies at St. Lorraine eng Kindergarten in Yuen Long which is a subsid of York. the school is very strong in english language and really well prepared for our kids to compete in the P1 interviews.

I would suggest you to buy a past paper from British council which includes CDs and exercises for starter exam and let your kid work on it during his spare time, get prepared and sit in the Starter Exam in HK once he reaches the age of 6 (next year). Heard othat the result can be out within a month and may be it will still be useful for knocking at the door.

Starter is in fact not hard for children who study at english kindergarten.

ESOL is tough due to the writing part comparing with Cambridge starter....therefore, without attending a course, it is pretty hard for our kids....with ESOL, my girl only got 100% in speaking, 95% in reading and Listening but 70% in writing...as she only started to spell the useful words from June and sit in exam in July. Only 1 month to get prepared. Without the school's training, it is hard. However, 2 classmates of my daughter got excellent result of 3 x 100% plus 1 x 95%. Their parents gave them great training at home also.

Not sure as it was organised by the school and they have a school also called St. Lorraine in Shengzhen. I will ask the headmistress after I return from my holiday two weeks later.
