我本身係慣性用法, 不懂解釋, 請各位指教。

with the word starting with "A" "E" "I" "O""U"(vowel sounds), need to use "an".

"a" is used before consonant sounds.

"THE": (used to make the following "noun" refer to a specific person, thing, event or group); also, when it has unique reference, such as the sun, the moon, the stars.

因為moon係專有名詞, 只有一個moon, 所以用the; 而kite係有好多種, 只係一個統稱, 用'a'係代表一個kite, 如有2個, 就要用'two kites' la!

Hi Lucky,

Yesterday, there is assignment for my kid who needs to write a sentence by himself about using the word "cow". My kid wrote down: "I have a cow in the farm.", but teacher said it's wrong, she corrected it as " I have a cow on the farm." Pls advise why we should use on the farm i/o "in'???

If you are referring to a normal kite in the sky, you have to use 'a kite'.

However, if you are referring to a specified one that you mentioned earlier in the passage, then you may use 'the kite'. In this situation, what you mean is "I can see that particular kite in the sky."

I don't know why but just use like this. Sometimes even foreigner cannot tell the reasons for using prepositions. Like we cannot explain why we can use "一頭牛", "一條牛" and "一條魚" o.k., "一尾魚" better but not "一頭魚".

is there any exceptional case that words start with a,e,i,o,u but not use "an"?

in 通常用係d有特定3-D空間如 in the box, in the bus, in the school bag. 而 on 就係一些平面上, 好似 on the chair, on the table, on the 5/f 咁.
farm 係指一達地用左黎做農場, 隻cow只係會on the farm, 如in the farm咪即係好似the pin was in the wall咁 law!

Exceptions (according to wikipedia, depending on whether the aeiou is used as a vowel or not):

a European, a one-horse town, a united country, a usurper, a eulogy, a ewe, a U-boat"

"an f, an umbrella, an unbeliever"

H is more interesting, again depending on whether h is sounded or not:

a hotel, a house, a hill, a hymn, a honeycomb
an hour, an honour, an honourable guest

"a" or "an" is depend on the pronounciation of the word, not the spelling.

e.g.
a university,
a user,
a unicorn,
a one-legged man,
an hour,
an honest boy
