Jolly Phonics - My Teaching Experience

Some parents asked me if they "really" need to learn Jolly phonics in detail since their children have already started taking phonics lessons. Then again, there are parents who wondered if it is too early for them to know about phonics when their children are still going to playgroups.

I believe that school education + parental guidance = the key to success. It is critical that the parents know how to monitor the progress of their children and understand how to give them a hand when needed. On the way to acquiring a new language, children will have to overcome many hurdles. If they are stuck, they can benefit much from gentle reminders. For instance, I once had a student who just could not make the /th/ sound properly. But after I taught his mom the trick of lightly biting the tip of the tongue, the boy got on quickly because he had more chances to imitate. Parent's assistance can do wonders!

Furthermore, children tend to live up to parents' expectation. When they know that phonics is something their parents' care about, they will pay extra attention and be motivated to impress their parents.

When all's said and done, phonics knowledge is closely tied to language learning. Understanding how children acquire languages will help parents make good choice in terms of picking the right teaching materials/programs or even school!

Wishing every mom a successful early years education!

Re: Jolly Phonics - My Teaching Experience

Dear Samantha_cc,

I'll go over all the 42 phonemes along with the complementary actions. The seminar's objective is to teach parents how Jolly phonics works, so that they can better monitor their children's progress. In addition, I'll also talk about the language development of children and share tips on how to encourage children to learn English.

Re: Jolly Phonics - My Teaching Experience

A mommy brought her little boy of 5 years old to me for an assessment yesterday. He was such a bright child! Very quick and responsive, he could communicate fluently in English.

However, since he was brought up by a Pilipino maid, his speech was mostly ungrammatical with a heavy foreign accent. He often dropped the subjects in sentences. E.g. When asked whether he wanted to go to Disneyland, he answered with an awkward "want" instead of the usual phrase like "I want to". Also, he tended to omit prepositions and ending sounds, e.g. "I too my sister lun", but what he meant was "I took my sister out for lunch."

Verbal articulacy is not necessarily a guarantee of English proficiency. Such common problems should be detected by parents and rectified with systematical phonics training before it is too late. Otherwise, children will be stuck with poor English oral skills unknowingly.

Re: Jolly Phonics - My Teaching Experience

Hi Totoma_2006,

Do you recommend teaching spoken English by native English Tutor , and grammar and phonics and comprehension by locally-trained English tutor as they seemed to be more experience in teaching local student for local school.

Re: Jolly Phonics - My Teaching Experience

Dear ggiy,

As long as children are able to match graphemes (letter representation) to phonemes (sounds), then studying another phonics program after school should not be a big problem.

However, it would be better if you can let your child's phonics teachers know that he/she is studying two phonics systems at the same time.

Hope it helps!

Re: Jolly Phonics - My Teaching Experience

hi totoma,

my girl is now 2y8mths.  I teach her JP myself and she has learnt 23 sounds already.  All of them are sounds of single letter, no digraph.

I will not teach blending at the moment as I find that she still doesn't has that sense.  Usually, I myself will blend the word and told her that a how a word is formed.  But she doesn't show any intereste.

May I know that if she can start your playgroup soon, or you will recommend her to start at, say, age 4??  I am urging her to learn all digraphs and blending but I just want to plan what I should do next.

She really shows interest in learning all other sounds.  I am wondering if I should proceed to digraph or take her to a learning center to learn blending first.

Pls help.  And if possible, pls pm me any information of your class/ learning centre.

Million thanks.

Re: Jolly Phonics - My Teaching Experience

Hi totoma_2006,

My son is 3 years old and he can already recognise the alphabet.

Pls let me know when will be the appropriate time for him to start learning the phonics.  BTW, do you have any classes in Kowloon Tong or Shatin as Yuen Long is too far away for us.

Many thanks.

Re: Jolly Phonics - My Teaching Experience

Dear Lulupoon,

Sorry for the late reply. Good oral English teachers are not limited to native English speakers only. There are still many locally trained teachers who can help students articulate accurate English phonemes. It is challenging, but not impossible, for locals to become truly fluent and eloquent English speakers! Afterall, this is what I'm trying to train the next generation to be :)

Re: Jolly Phonics - My Teaching Experience

Dear Somama,

You're such a dedicated mom! Good job!

Learning to blend is very much like learning how to ride a bike. You can imagine how frustrating it is to balance on two wheels in the beginning, but once you "got" it, you will love riding for life.

It is a bit early for children around two to three years old to blend, for mixing and separating sounds is an abstract concept for them. As for when she's ready for further phonics training, I need to see her myself to know for sure.

Finally, I applaud you for the progress you are making :)

Re: Jolly Phonics - My Teaching Experience

Dear rayvonne and chuchuma,

There is no magic number when it comes to children's readiness for phonics. Every child is unique and needless to say, and early language development depends on a wide spectrum of cognitive, linguistic, social, and behavioral functioning. But generally speaking, most children are ready for phonics around 4 years old.

Of course, there are exceptions! A 2 year-and-7-month boy has just broken my record to be the youngest phonics student. His language maturity and personality are both suitable for a more formal classroom training. The way this kid carried himself fooled me into thinking that he is close to 4 years old!

Re: Jolly Phonics - My Teaching Experience

A nice couple from Sham Tseng brought their kids to enroll for phonics classes last week. I think they are probably among the most liberal and free-thinking parents I know, and from the way their kids turn out, their philosophy works quite well. They do not let the influence of prestigious schools (DBS and Kenville) sway their opinions about the definition of success, and they keep the kids very well-balanced.

I'm proud of their parenting and hopefully I can do the same one day ;)
