Read a lot of story books.
Learn to write sentences/essays.
Learn to learn by himself and have fun in it.

Gogochurch:

This is basically all that one has to do to train a child! hahaha! I would say that you've got almost all of what I'd say--LEARN TO LEARN BY HIMSELF AND HAVE FUN IN IT! Believing it or not, many bright people tend to maintain this quality even until they are adults. David Suzuki even claimed that it's because people generally lost their curiosity of nature that they fail to learn the messages around them...(not sure if he's too extreme, though~!)

Hm... perhaps, another practical but "non-academic" preparation that you neeed to think about is your child's ability to express himself/herself in front of strangers.

You may want to encourage him/her to share what he/she learns from reading, and try asking your child questions to see if he/she is willing to explain to you more clearly.

Bring your child to places like science world/other museums and ask what the displays are about. All you want is to increase his observation skills and allow him to voice out what he thinks.

One last thing, train your child's English speaking skills. When interviews are known to be so short/competitive, a child with good language skills tends to give people an impression that he/she is smarter (even though it's not necessarily the case all the time)!

Thanks for your advice. 我個囡冇mud自信, especially when she was talking to people like teachers, you can hardly hear what she said even she know how to do/answer the questions. I have already enrolled her to different ECA, seems no improvement. I'm very worried about that. Actually, she is very talktative, energetic kids, when she played with other kids. Pls advise how to

1. build up her confidence
2. how to train her to be more independent & 淡定

Hi bbqueen,

My daughter is a very shy person. She feared to speak even in front of her own class in K2, and all teachers agreed she was very shy. I let her join some drama programmes where she gradually picked up confidence in public speaking and performance. She has also joined the School Speech Festival and Music Festival since K2. Now she told me she loves performance and speaking in the school assembly.

There are some interesting programmes for fun, e.g. the APA's "let's speak up - junior presentation programme" (敢言小人類). I find that kids learn best in games, and interview course could be too stressful ?!

I think talking a lot to friends and adults help to build up the child's confidence, and her readiness in talking to strangers. Instead of joining couses, you may also consider more social exposure or a playgroup with her classmates (e.g. parents just take turn to talk to another kid). Save the money and have fun.

Dear gogochurch,

I read the prospectus of APA regarding the course "let's speak up - junior presentation programme" (敢言小人類) and note the student/teacher ratio is 25:2. I doubt whether the 2 teachers can deal with 25 student in 1 hour and improve the presentation skill in 10 lessons.

Do you know any drama classes which has a lower student/teacher ration ? Please recommend.

They have P 1 Prepartory Summer Classes. pleaes have a look

My cousin just took drama course and phoinics courses there, big improvements not only in English but also manner, self confidence and communication after that.His mom said my cousin asked to watch English channel after joining the classes. Last week I saw their drama performance after 6 lessons. It 's excellent. The kids love the courses very much and I heard a lot of positive comments from the parents. I heard about the HK Children Musical Theatre and the Kids Gallery. You can check their web site for more information.
