Re: Woodland Repluse Bay Montessori Pre-School

Do you mean the one in The Repulse Bay?   It feels rather small and conjested.  Not a lot of internal play area.  The school can use the outdoor space within the complex though, eg. the playground.  (Check out Southside, also on the Repulse Bay.  It's slightly bigger and feels very nice & homey.  It mainly caters for expats kids and hence, very little mandarin teaching.)   I know someone who sends her daughter to the annex branch, ie. the other Woodland in Repulse Bay.  Similar comments from her regarding space.  A lot of kids apparently left that school eventually with only a few stayed on in the class.  She was also thinking of changing school, but her child's grown to love everything about it, so she is still there.

Have you visisted the school yourself?

Re: Woodland Repluse Bay Montessori Pre-School

Hello JJsMama,

Besides the school is small, do you know how is the quality of teaching and the teachers?

Why did your friend want to change school, is it because the school was small or there is something wrong with it ?  If the daugther grows to love everything about it then does it mean it's good ?

Re: Woodland Repluse Bay Montessori Pre-School

I don't think she's too concerned about the quality of teaching because her child is only 2.5 years old, and she'll be sending the kid to HKIS next year.  I think, yes, at one point she wanted to change because of the numbers.

Re the quality of teaching, I'm afraid  don't know much about this school.  However, when considering a Montessori school, one should first ask themselves whether they believe in or like the Montessori teaching method, and then whether the teaching staff are fully qualified Montessori teachers.

Re: Woodland Repluse Bay Montessori Pre-School

Concerning the teaching method Montessori, when I enrolled my son to Woodlands' playgroup, I talked over this with the school supervisor.  She said Woodlands provides both traditional and Montessori streams.  However, she personally viewed that traditonal method is more all-rounded in training up a child.  I was quite surprised when I first heard of this as I thought that Woodlands was rather proud of its Montessori teaching in my impression.  But if one really wants to have their children to be Montessori taught, I think Woodlands is reliable as it's accredited.  Little schools who claim themselves schools teaching Montessori are officially recognized.

Whether it's Montessori or not, I see Woodlands teachers professional.

Re: Woodland Repluse Bay Montessori Pre-School

I think Montessori and Traditional have more similarities than differences.  I think the most important thing in a preschool is that the teachers are well qualified and caring.

Amosmother, which woodland did your little on attend?

Re: Woodland Repluse Bay Montessori Pre-School

Hello Blythe_miki

Hope you enjoy your visit. ...Are you specifically looking for a Montessori school, or you're just keen to find a decent traditional kindergarten?

While you're in The Repulse Bay, you may also want to check out Southside (just for comparison).  I'm not sure where you live and hence whether it's convenient for you.  But since mandarin is not a priority, other kindies to consider are (you may know these already):   PIPs (HK Parkview), Sunshine House (Peak, Tai Tam), Highgate House (Peak; use Wardolf teaching) and the recently opened Woodland Montessori in Tai Tam.  The latter is more spacious than its Repulse Bay branch.

For Montessori, the choice is rather limited.  There is one in Stanley (Montessori for Children) and Wanchai (International Montessori School).  Both are accredited.   My neighbour, whose child (now at GSIS) went to the one in Stanley, was all thumbs up about it.   But, again, that school is tiny.

I think to make the choice simpler, first decide on Montessori vs traditional.   The teaching methodology is very different.  True blue Montessori stresses on the individual (ie. one-to-one teaching) and mix-age class.  It uses only the Montessori teaching tools.  While conventional kindies do everything in groups and have a more 'sociable' environment.   The pros of Montessori is the kid can learn according to his/her abilities, and develop excellent concentration.   Great for the very bright (or comparatively slower) children.

Hope this helps.

Re: Woodland Repluse Bay Montessori Pre-School

JJsMama,

actually i am looking for a summer school program in July for my son at Repluse Bay area, i have heard Southside Kindergarten, i will go and visit this as well.

My son was attend Sunshine House (Tung Chung Campus) since he is 2 years old and stopped after 4 months, becoz their English standard is very low, whole class are Chinese with few mix, they speak Chinese in class!! and their class activities, most of the Art & Crafts work are done by the teacher, in knew it by looking through at the window during the lesson time.

Once i switched my son to Starters School, his English improve alot and he is now very happy attending this school, when he was in Sunshine House, he is crying not going to school everyday.

i have applied GSIS,FIS, JIS and CDNIS for my son, hope he will pass through the interview...

Re: Woodland Repluse Bay Montessori Pre-School

Hi Blythe_miki

All the best with the applications!    Will keep fingers crossed for you!

Sunshine House (the one is Tai Tam) have mainly expat children, so English is definitely the primary medium of communication.   However, saying that, the kids there are from all different nationalities - English, French,  Germans, etc.   So, the non-native speakers (esp the younger ones) could be a little slow in picking up the English language too.

For summer programme, perhaps you could check out Highgate House too.   Quite an interesting school (the only Wardolf school in HK) with a large majority of expat children.     Definitely English-speaking.  It may not be the cup of tea for most local parents though.

Re: Woodland Repluse Bay Montessori Pre-School

Highgate House is owned by a western lady and employs mainly expat teachers/staff.   It has a very 'western' feel - large classrooms with high ceilings which lead out to a play area with rabbit house, vegetable patch, etc.  They serve fresh home-baked/made tea to the children in a long table decorated with real flowers!  The set up is very different from the 'regular' kindergartens.

My son is coming to 31/2 soon.   I have done my thorough round of research and visits to all the 'pre'-international schools kindergartens.   He now studies at Victoria, which I have to commend is fantastic.   I'll be sending him to SIS this coming school year.   Unlike you, my focus is to make sure he has an excellent grounding in Chinese.

Re: Woodland Repluse Bay Montessori Pre-School

I am planning to have my 4 yr old girl to join the Woodland summer program. I am thinking of either Happy Valley ((Hawthorn Road) or Wanchai Intl School (Oi Kwan raod, tang shiu kin building) campus. Anyone has visited the schools before and any comments which is better? thanks,

Re: Woodland Repluse Bay Montessori Pre-School

Hi bigheadcat

Montessori for Children has been around for many years and is a popular choice for the expat children in the catchment area.   Their morning class is very full and has a waiting list of around a year. The school premise is very very small, and gives a very personal, homey feel.  If I remember correctly, there were only two classes (classrooms):  One for the older children preparing for primary school, and the other for the younger children.  The younger class comprised of children of mix ages and is led by a English-speaking teacher and a mandarin teacher.   The principle owns two sister Montessori schools in Singapore & Canada.   A Singaporean acquaintance of mine spoke highly of the Spore establishment, and my ex-neighbour sang praises of the one in Stanley.  Hence, by word of mouth, I would imagine it's not a bad choice for a Montessori education despite the size of their premise.  Their adminstrator told me their children eventually attend GSIS, ESF, HKIS, CIS, etc.

I visited Woodland Tai Tam last June.  It was new and so had relatively few students.  It wasn't too appealing to me at the time because I had wanted a lively environment with more social interaction for my child.   The facilities is comparatively better than the Montessori in Stanley.  I personally find the environment too quiet though things may look different now that it's more established.  A German neighbour I spoke with last year loved the serenity.

I'm a keen believer of the Montessori model and would prefer my child to go to a Montessori school.  But, I didn't choose either one because they were not totally right for me.  ...Are you looking for a Montessori school? . ...Perhaps you like to also check out the International Montessori School in Queen's Road?   I heard the morning classes are pretty full too.

Re: Woodland Repluse Bay Montessori Pre-School

JJMaMa,
Thanks a lot for the advice.
The one in Wan Chai maybe a bit far away from me as i live at Southside. I may consider it if it's really much better than the other two.Apart from the size, which one you recommend most among these three?

In addition, i planned to send my son to GSIS or CIS.Except from the IB programme, how do you compare with CIS and SIS?People considering SIS will also consider CIS at the same time or totally irrelevant?
Thanks again.

Re: Woodland Repluse Bay Montessori Pre-School

HI bigheadcat

1:22-25 does sound a bit high, especially when you consider the teacher needs to spend time and give individual attention to each child.   However, I recall there were at least two teachers in the room (for the younger group of about 20 kids) and 1 teacher with the older group (of about 10 kids).   You may like to call up the school and speak with the adminstrator Claudia to clarify.

Out of Montessori for Children & Woodland, I would probably choose the former.  Reason being:  1.  Vicinity to my home, 2. A number of children from my building go there, hence, it's great for socialising, 3. Staff - some of them have worked there for a number of years, so there is a sense of longevity & committment, 4.  During my visit, I observed each child were able to focus well on their individual materials - no chaos, no messing around, they basically behaved beautifully.  5.  Has a mandarin teacher who will teach mandarin according to the child's ability, 6.  Reputation - the odd remarks I hear about the school were positive.   Saying that, one (esp. local parents) has to get through the psychological hurdle of a small and rather simple school facility.

To the question of CIS vs SIS, I & my husband have different POV, so to this stage I still ponder about the best choice for us.   Saying that, I have decided to only apply to SIS; and my son has been accepted for the coming school year.   A lot of friends (including ones with children in CIS) have highly recommended SIS to me.  They all have high regards to SIS' academic standard.   Not surprising because SIS follows Spore's curriculum which is fairly demanding.  But very importantly, the common feedback indicates that parents & students alike love the school.   As for CIS, I don't doubt that it's great.  However, I do have concern about the 'elitist' background of some of the children - which leads me to think whether there is favouritism from the teachers.  Also, whether some of the kids are too spoilt.  (I probably am a little oversentive in this area.)  Anyway, another draw for me with SIS is 'discipline' - it's like music to my ears.  My objective is for my kid to lay a solid academic foundation.  He can later move onto other schools like CIS & GSIS.

How about you?  What are your thoughts on CIS vs SIS?

Re: Woodland Repluse Bay Montessori Pre-School

Hi JJsMaMa,

That's really informative.I will visit the campus on Monday and check the details. Thanks again.

For me, I am still struggling between GSIS and CIS and of course they may not accept my son.
There is not doubt that the students in GSIS are well disciplined which i concern most.  However, they don't offer strong Chinese programme. I need to arrange Chinese tuition after class. CIS adopt the IB programme and the billingual system i quite like. The resources and facilities are really impressive. However, the students there are quite opinionated. Anyway, they enjoy their school life very much there.
Afterall, the competition for place in either of them is very keen. Therefore, i need to apply one or two more schools. That's why i ask about SIS.I don't have any friends' children studying there. I just learn the information from this forum and it sounds good and its location is convinient. Probably, i will visit the school next week to find out more.Is the waiting list long for SIS?
