ICS P1 interview

Can anyone tell me something about ICS (International Christian School) P.1 interview? Is it difficult? What do they do? What questions do they ask? Could the parents stay with the child during interview?

Many many thanks!

Re: ICS P1 interview

Will the parents have chance to talk to the principal after the interview? Will there be bigger chance for Christian family?

Dear heratang,
Yes, the parent will have a chance to talk to the principle.  I don't think Christians have higher chance.

Re: ICS P1 interview

Dear Lenglengma,
Is your kid studying ICS? Can he speak & write Chinese as a student from a traditional school in HK?

Re: ICS P1 interview

Yes..they are in ICS kindergarten...but they don't have any Chinese lessons in kindergarten.  But they do have some extra curriculum classes on Wednesday which teach them basic basic stuff (not writing or reading, probably just basic  conversation or singing in Mandarin).  They do have a more intensive program in elementary though.

Re: ICS P1 interview

I know, there is no formal Chinese lesson for ICS kindergarten. But, do you think that intensive Chinese program in elementary can be comparable with local primary school. If not, how weak they will be in Chinese language development during elementary schooling.

For any other things, please feel free to share with us about ICS. For example, after our kids finish ICS kindergarten, can they be promoted to elementary? Similar concerns...... Of course, they need to meet school requirement(s) in order to be promoted to higher years. But, do they have higher priority in sitting.

Overall speaking, do you recommend ICS to us?

Thanks for your kind attention.

Re: ICS P1 interview

tommyzoe,
I really think that their Chinese program can't be compared to local schools', but I heard that they are going to have a more intense Chinese program soon.  After kindergarten, kids need to have a "test" before they get accepted into pre-first grade (considered as elementary section, although it is not yet first grade).  The test is around 45 mins and the kid will be tested by two specialists.  You have to pass that test to get into elementary.
I do recommend ICS to ALL parents, because people/teachers/kids there are different.  They are definatey more caring, and I like the way kids behave at ICS so far...they are much more discipline when compared to other international school kids.  I also like about their extra-curriculum, and they stress so much on after school activities, music, arts and sports.
I know it will be harder and harder to get a space due to their new state-of-the-art campus in 2007, so I suggest you guys to be hurry!

Re: ICS P1 interview

I would like to thank you for information. Well, do you care about weak Chinese ability (esp. in writing) of a student from ICS? It is because, if our kid will work in HK or mainland after university degree, is there any weakness in finding a job? China will be more & more in economical inference to the world......

What is your view? Pls. feel free to share. I am open to want to look.

Thanks a lot!

Is there any ICS parents' club I can join?

Re: ICS P1 interview

Dear lenglengma,

Is there any restriction to the child's age when submitting P1 application form, e.g. can only submit application when he turns to 4?  Please kindly advise.

Re: ICS P1 interview

Dear tommyzoe,
I am not worried because I believe that a kid's way of thinking and the environment that they are brought up with are more important than a language standard.  The school and how we teach our kids shape their characters and what kinda person they turn out to be.  While, a language doesn't really do much.  Yes, I understand that you kids will probably go to China or Hong Kong to work in the future...but think about all those foreigners who work in H.K. and China for so long...they have no problems at all even they don't even speak the language.  I believe their abilities are most important.  ICS doe have a Chinese program but it is taught in simplified Chinese and it is not as intense as CIS's of course.  I heard that CIS has a very intense Chinese program which is probably the same as local school's.  To me, as long as they know how to read, speak and write like a sixth graders...then they will be fine...

Re: ICS P1 interview

Thanks for your good points of view.

As we are Christian family, I do believe that my kid needs a good spiritual environment like ICS. Of course, academic level is also important. I think ICS can do both. Right? It seems that I send my kid to ICS that is a right choice.

More information about ICS is welcome.

Re: ICS P1 interview

Amosmother,

You don't need to wait till your child reaches 4 to submit an application.  I submitted mine early and the school called me to confirm the intended entry year & grade of my child.  But first come not necessarily means first served because they have a priority system.  I think children from ICS kindergarten and siblings of existing students will have priority for elementary school, i.e. P1. It should be easier if the child can get a place in ICS kindergarten first because there're about 60 children in K2 but only 70+ places in P1.

Re: ICS P1 interview

I sent application to ICS when my son in younger than 2 years old. He attended interview for R1 in age of 2 years and few months. He will be just 3 years old when he starts R1 study in August. This is a good place for him. He is loving ICS. Principal said that he will be youngest one in class. So you may send application to ICS anytime.

I hope it is useful for you.
