CDNIS pre-reception Aug 06

Is there any parents who have made  up  their decision?  I  am still struggling between St. paaul's Convent and CDNIS.  Most probably, I will choose CDNIS as  I will  try CIS and GSIS a year later.

Please share your view.

Re: CDNIS pre-reception Aug 06

HI Vinna,

GSIS/CDNIS/CIS and St. Paul's Convent are very different route.  Why would you want to enroll your little one into St. Paul's Convent if your eventual goal is an international school ?

Just IMHO.

Re: CDNIS pre-reception Aug 06

My daughter now studies at CDNIS prereception. She is very happy and enjoys going to school very much. The teachers are great and they are happy to discuss every child's special needs. GREAT SCHOOL!

Re: CDNIS pre-reception Aug 06

As I was not sure that whether I will change my mind, I have made a reasonble number of appllications for my daugther whether international schoolor not.

We applied  for St. Paul's Convent because we live in Tai Hang and the school  is very near to our place and there are  so many BK parents saying that it is  a good school for girls.

In any case, I  have now made   up my mind to let  her study in CDNIS.

Re: CDNIS pre-reception Aug 06

Dear Prettymom

It is so great to hear your comments on CDNIS.  In fact,  I know 3 children of diffeerent backgrounds who had spent 1 to 2  years in CDNIS (pre-reception/reception/ preparatory) and then were admitted to CIS eventually.

Mind to share whether your daugther is in a.m. or  afternoon class?  To me, the morning class is too early and the  the time for the afternoon  class is too odd.  What is your experience?

Are they teaching Phonics at pre-reception?  If  yes, what do they use?  Letterland or Jolly?

What do you think of the school's contribution to your daugther's  improvement in  reading and verbral  skills in the past months?

Sorry for having posted so many questions  to you.

Many thanks for sharing your experience.

Re: CDNIS pre-reception Aug 06

Hi Prettymom & Vinna,

May I join in your discussion.. .  cause my son is going to join the reception class of CDNIS this year also.

I am rather concerned about the chinese learning as well. To my understanding, they have mandarin class everyday and they are using the traditional chinese for teaching. Please correct me if I am wrong. However, I am not sure how long is the class everyday and when will Chinese learning becomes an optional subject. Grade 3 or 4?

I also learn that there will be a fundraising ball held in May at Grand Hyatt for which costs $1888 per head. I would like to know if most of the parents will go for that?

Last question - how is the PTA at CDNIS? Is parents' participation encouraged in CDNIS?

I am sorry for so many questions. Thanks for yr sharing in advance.

Re: CDNIS pre-reception Aug 06

Dear mommies,

I'll try my best to answer your questions. My daughter goes to the pre-reception p.m. and I'm quite happy with the hours. As you say, the a.m. class starts fairly early (but in fact, all a.m. intl school class starts around 8am anyway). The p.m. prereception class starts at 11:45 and ends 2:30pm. I personally find it quite nice because my daughter can eat her lunch before going to school. After she returns from school, she then takes a quick nap and still have 2 hours before her dinner at 6pm.

They dont teach phonics in the prereception class.

They have 2 short sessions of Mandarin Class each week in prereception. I believed it is going to be 3 short sessions/week in reception, and the  hours increase as the child move on. Dont expect your child to "know" Mandarin at this stage, it is just an introductory period for them to get used to the foreign language. I heard the course become quite difficult in the higher grades though.

Parent participation is very encouraged at CDNIS, sometimes I found it a bit too much given my busy work schedule ...

Yes, they do have a fund raising ball in May. I believed a lot of parents will participate, especially if their children may be performing in the ball.

Re: CDNIS pre-reception Aug 06

Dear Prettymommy

Thanks a lot for  your information.  I am sure that my daugther will  enjoy  the kind of learning environment that CDNIS offers.

My elder son who is 9 years old  is studying in St. Joseph's.  Though he is doing pretty well at school, I found him wasting a lot of time doing meaningless exercises and stupid corrections.  His classmates are very result oriented and a lot of them actually  look down upon those students get poor marks ( I suspect it is parents' influence).  I  think that good education is much more than getting high marks in exams!

With this experience, I am reluctant to place my daugther in  local schools.  I wish that my daugther will have a good learning environment.

Re: CDNIS pre-reception Aug 06

Hi Prettymom & Vinna,

Thanks a lot for yr sharing.

I share the same view as you Vinna that a fun and enjoyable learning environment is very important to kids, especially these very young ones. That's why we decieded to send our kids to int'l school.

On the other hand, I do worry that kids may go too 'westernised' under the intl school system. I learnt from another BK mom that she actually saw students dating inside the campus, holding hands or even sitting in the lap of a boy. So she chose SIS finally for a more disciplined environment. What's your views on this?

Vinna - as you mentioned some of yr friends' kids transferred to CIS after spending a few years in CDNIS, may I know if this is their strategy in getting in CIS or due to other problems w/CDNIS?
CIS is famous for academic achievement but also its "blue-blood" in-takes. Is that true all the students there come from the very very rich families? Do you think there will be hard feelings for those students who come from middle-income families?

Re: CDNIS pre-reception Aug 06

Prettymom & Vinna,

My daughter is 11 months old and I know that CDNIS's pre reception class is for children with age 3. So when I need to submit the application? And how about the debenture, do I need to purchase the debenture when submit the application or after my daughter is admitted.

Thanks a lot.

Re: CDNIS pre-reception Aug 06

You can send in your application anytime. I sent in mine right after my  daughter was born.

Debenture last year cost approx HK$300,000 (there was a wait list) or you can choose to pay the annual capital levy which is approx $20,000 per year (this is non refundable).

You only pay for the debenture or capital levy after your child has been accepted.

Hope it helps   :
