As other people said, it is easier to get into a top school by computer allocation than by 自行分配學位. Then it will be foolish to lower your requirement to apply to the school which is not your first choice.
For a band 1 student, always apply to the school you and the student like most. If successful, everyone is happy; if not, just allow the god to decide in the central allocation.
As to the ranking of students applying to a school, the school in most cases will not look at the student's 成績表 as it is impossible to compare the rankings of different schools. For the student's academic performance, they will look at the ranking provided to them by EMB of all the applicants applying to the school. As a matter of fact, in central and western district, I have known girls with ranking beyond 30th from good primary schools be short listed by the two best girls' schools in the district for interview.
