My son is a K1 student in St. Nicholas (SN). I chose this kinder coz the cousins of my son were also graduated from the same school and their academic achievement were very outstanding, they were admitted to their desired primary schools. Though my son has started his school-life in SN for only two months’ time, he can iterate simple sentences like ‘Today is a sunny (or rainy) day’, ‘Today is Monday/ Tuesday…’, ‘May I go to toilet please’, ‘I like candies’, etc. He can also speak in Mandarin like “老師早, 小朋友早”, “中秋節吃月餅”. He can also recognize Chinese characters like ‘眼’, ‘耳’, ‘口’, ‘手’, ‘腳’, ‘果’, etc. In fact my son was not a particularly smart guy but the curriculum of SN was quite good that the children can learn quite a lot from school. They really learn from textbook like ‘A’ for astronault, alligator. They have textbooks (12 English readers, 2 phonics, 2 Mandarin, 12 Chinese, etc. for one academic year) even for K1 students (which is far more than other kinders). They are English-oriented with 5 days English lessons (taught by native speakers) and 3 days Potunghua lessons (The potunghua teacher is execellent) per week. My son enjoyed his school life very much, if I don’t let him go to school, he will always cry. The only setback of the school is the fairly small and old campus.

Thank you for your sharing. How much homework does SN give students (in average) everyday? How much time do kids need to spend on the homework?
Do they use the project learning approach, or traditional lecture approach?

They have homework everyday, up til now, they are doing line drawing and coloring exercises. They will start to write from the second half of the term onwards. Since my son is an extremely naughty boy, his attention span is very low, his homework was done intermittently. On average, I have to spend about 20 minutes to 1 hour to finish homework with him. In fact the school adopts a 活動教學approach, as far as I’ve observed, the kids are quite active, they took part in drawing, singing and all sorts of craftwork in acquiring knowledge. They also have normal school activities like outings, visits, lantern design competition, etc.

I also agree with you that SN's curriculum is really good and the Putonghua-Ms Lau is excellent and even the best at school.

My son is now U3 and I'm planning to let my little daughter joins the school from 2nd term (is that from Feb-2006?)

The school fee is reasonable but the coverage of curriculum is quite comprehensive.

But the school time is too short. from 9:00 to 12:00 - actually what I heard from other mothers - 11:00 tea time, 11:30 queue up for leaving school so my son arrives at home (Whampoa) is 12:10

I agree that the school hour is a little bit short. My younger daughter is now 8.5 months old and I also intend to apply SN for her when she is at her admission's age.

Then, will you also consider other kindergarten than SN. Actually my dream school is St Catherine for my daughter. But the school fee is almost double than SN. Anyway SN can provide what I expect to get (except something like creative, 德育)

In fact my daughter has a good appetite, she ate a lot. She's more than 20 pounds when she is 6 month's old. What about your daughter?

I will also consider the kindergarten section of St. Paul's Convent School in Causeway Bay since this is my former school. And I know that if and only if kids were admitted to the kinder can they be admitted to the primary section. However there are lots to consider such as moving flats (since we live in TKO). St. Catherine is also a good choice, but they don't have Mandarin class, so I will prefer SN to SC.

Your son in now in U3, have you got any preference of his primary school? Do you know that where will SN kids (boys) ususally go after they finished their kindergarten studies?

something about 德育? as it is my 2nd choice if Sc cannot accept my son.

i am also living in TKO ! but i know St.cat also provides Mandarin class, so you better check.
i think now a lot of kindergartens will offer more than languages.

meantime, how long does the school bus take from TKo to SN? how i know the school time is very short, 11:30 that they have to get on the bus, so ..

I would like to ask for some comments from you. My daughther is studying in St. Cat. but my personally would like to move her to SN instead. The reason is they don't provide enough English environment. Although, they have English teacher in the class. But anyway, I have read about the article you comments in the Babykingdom. I think you may help me to know more about SN.
1. Do SN has the weekly report about the course?
2. How often the English teacher in the classroom?
3. Do they have any activities in school?
4. How do you compare with SN and St. C?
5. How many classroom in the morning and afternoon session?

I know most of the people will choose St. Cat because the reputation are good and will easily go to good primary school. Do you think so? I really hope that you can help me to make a decision.
