Re: Int'l Phonetic course
jjmame,
My son also learns Letterland phonics both at school and at Eng learning centre.
As the phonic rules are compartively more simple, I think Phonics (no matter Letterland or Jolly Phonics) is suitable for younger kids of aged 6 or below.
On the other hand, IPA is a bit more complicated (there are 21 basic phoenetic sound), it is advisable for kids aged 6 or above to learn.
Actually some of of words pronouced by using IPA in dictionary may be different from using phonic rules we usually applied, so there are quite a lot of exceptions exist which is hard to explain to kids in the world of Phonics.
I will continue to let my son studying Phonics so that he can have basic understanding of sound of words. However, when he reaches primary level, I will let him join IPA course so that he will know the correct pronounciation of the words when he looks up from the dictionary.
As per Derek Kwok (the teacher of IPA), phonics is basically designed for native speaker (who use Eng as their mother tongue) helping them to read. Since the environment in HK is different, so actually the effect of phonics on Chinese kids is comparatively less effective. |
