anyone doing it with their babies? I taught my first child baby signs and starting to teach my second baby (now age 7 months). I just want other baby signing moms to share with me their experiences!!

I started when my first daughter was about 9 months. but i didn't do it very seriously so she learned only about 20 signs like 'eat, drink, frog, giraffe' etc. then when she turned 1 she started signing back. when she saw some animals that she knows then she would show me the sign without me asking! I was so excited. so she could kind of talk with me before she could actually talk.
so this time when I have my second son I'm determined to make it work even more. so for example when I feed him food I would show the sign 'eat'. hopefully he'll pick it up soon and let me know that he needs to eat etc etc. there's a wonderful book called 'baby signs' that talks about this subject. it's already quite popular in the US but I wonder if there are moms in hk who can share with me !

I saw TV show on this subject many years ago. When my BB was very young, I tried getting info on it on the net but couldn't find any. But my BB started speaking quite early and by 14 month, he could put two words together already. Since he could express himself quite well at a very young age, I didn't feel a need for the sign languages anymore. But I was just curious whether signing would sort of delay speaking for babies as they might grow too used to signing.

actually according to the book and different researches, baby signing actually speeds up language development. their argument is that when a baby can walk they will no longer crawl. but crawling (like signing) is a transition for baby to get to places when he's ready to walk. for my first child, she could also use 2-word sentences early, around 16 months. now she's 2.5 and she speaks like a grown up! they also claim that baby signing can boost up IQ. this I don't really care. I only want my children to be able to express their needs and wants.

if you search the net there will be lots of links. also you can take a look at the book called 'baby signs' by linda acredolo.
there's also a new Kindermusik program that incorporates baby signs.
basically what you do is to use a few very common signs during everyday activities. at first you'll feel that baby is not responding. then one day when he signs back you're so happy!

i taught my little girl "baby signs" when she was 3 months , but i didn't take it seriously and i am not exactly follow the ASL, I create some of them which is base on having fun,and she enjoys a lot.
Anyway, i think signing with baby is no harm at all, just don't expect too much about he/she signs back to you or not,they will when they do.
my baby now 15 months and she talks a lot.

I believe sign language is a kind of human language,just not very popular in HK,it helps baby to express their thoughts before talking. so happy can share with u .

thanks for your sharing. just a side track comment: so nice to know that you're a breast feeding mom! I also breast feed my children. my daughter never took a bottle in her entire life!
