Colchester grammar school to join academy trust after Ofsted report

https://www.gazette-news.co.uk/news/23269864.colchester-grammar-school-join-academy-trust-ofsted-report/

A GRAMMAR school embroiled in controversy after an Ofsted report found its pupils felt “unsafe” looks set to be taken on by an academy trust.

Colchester Royal Grammar School (CRGS), which faced a turbulent year after receiving an ‘inadequate’ rating in July 2021, hopes to join Thinking Schools Academy Trust.
The school will join the trust, which is made up of 21 schools including three grammar schools, subject to Department for Education approval.
In a letter to parents, CRGS chair of trustees Janet Perry said: “We expect to hear this news early next month.

“If we get that approval, we intend to conduct an online engagement process so we can hear all interested parties’ views.”
The move will mark the first time the school has joined a multi-academy trust in its near 900-year history.
School bosses hope joining the trust will “secure the future” of CRGS following a tumultuous period, resulting in Ofsted’s inspection in 2021.

The school was threatened with having its funding agreement withdrawn when the watchdog found its pupils felt “unsafe” after being subject to sexist or racist comments.

The school received a termination warning notice after inspectors concluded leaders failed to address a “pervading culture in the school which does not promote equality and respect”.

The Ofsted report found school bosses had not ensured boys understand “how to interact appropriately” with girls.

The report said certain parts of the school “have become a hostile environment for some pupils”.

It said: “A significant number of pupils feel uncomfortable or unsafe in school and report being the subject of insulting and damaging comments regarding their gender, appearance, race or sexual orientation.

“Pupils are too often reluctant to pass their concerns on to staff.

“Consequently, leaders are largely unaware of the difficulties some pupils face.”
Inspectors revisited the school in February last year, finding leaders had since made “rapid improvements”.

A letter to headteacher John Russell said: “Serious weaknesses in the school’s safeguarding arrangements identified at the time of the previous inspection are being dealt with systematically.

“Safeguarding arrangements are much more effective than they were previously.

“A stronger culture of safeguarding is evident throughout the school.”
Ms Perry told parents: “Joining a multi-academy trust is a very important decision for our school, and we want to be clear that this matter has been given a huge amount of care and attention.

“Thinking Schools was founded by Rochester Grammar School.

“All schools within the trust work together to transform the life chances of the young people in their care, and the trust is extremely proud of how it works across the educational landscape with children of all ages and in all types of schools.”

Colchester Royal Grammar School celebrates 'progress'

https://www.gazette-news.co.uk/news/23019561.colchester-royal-grammar-school-celebrates-progress/

An under fire grammar school has been told it may be able to avoid another academy trust taking over - if it can turn around its inadequate Ofsted rating.

Colchester Royal Grammar School has faced a turbulent 14 months.

The Lexden Road school was threatened with having its funding agreement withdrawn when Ofsted found its pupils felt “unsafe” after being subject to sexist or racist comments.

The school received a termination warning notice after inspectors concluded leaders failed to address a “pervading culture in the school which does not promote equality and respect”.

An Ofsted report, published in July 2021, found school bosses had not ensured boys understand “how to interact appropriately” with girls.

A letter from Sue Baldwin, regional schools commissioner for the East of England and North-East London, first sent to the school on July 9 last year, suggested the funding agreement of the academy may be cut off.

This could lead to the school being taken over by a multi-academy trust if improvements are not made.

A new letter sent to the school from the Department for Education states chiefs are “encouraged” with the progress being made towards choosing another trust.

However, it said if improvements continue to be made and the school is no longer ranked inadequate in its next inspection, it will be able to remain under the control of its own academy trust.

Headmaster John Russell told the Gazette “real and sustained progress” has been made in response to the issues raised by Ofsted.

“This is not only evident in the reviews that the local authority and other external partners have undertaken, but also in our most recent Ofsted monitoring inspection.

“The inspectors found the school was making rapid improvements in ensuring a ‘stronger culture of safeguarding is evident throughout the school’.”

Over the summer the grammar school celebrated pupils securing some of the schools strongest ever results in its history.

85 per cent of A-levels sat achieved a grade of A or above, with 54 per cent at A* and 84 per cent of all GCSEs securing at least a grade 7.

Mr Russell continued: “Our work, however, is not done. It is important that we continue to look to the future to further understand if and how there is more that we can do for our community.”

Colchester Royal Grammar wins Sunday Times School of the year

1st December 2023

https://www.gazette-news.co.uk/news/23959794.colchester-royal-grammar-wins-sunday-times-school-year/

A COLCHESTER school has been named the best secondary school in East Anglia in a yearly league table.

The Sunday Times Schools Guide 2024 will be published on Sunday.

Colchester Royal Grammar School, which was rated inadequate at its last Ofsted inspection, has topped the regional rankings in East Anglia for the Parent Power standings.

The school has reclaimed the top spot after being placed second behind King Edward VI Grammar School, Chelmsford, last year.

The guide ranks the highest-achieving secondary schools across the UK and has a searchable database of over 1,000 schools involved.

Nationally, Colchester Royal Grammar School ranked sixth out of 400 of the top state secondary and grammar schools in the UK, Wales, and Northern Ireland.

When it comes to the category of the best grammar and comprehensive in East Anglia, the school takes the crown, beating seven other Essex-based schools on the list.

https://www.gazette-news.co.uk/resources/images/17507409.jpg?type=mds-article-962

Each school have been meticulously ranked by performance when it comes to A-levels and GCSE results of this summer. A*, A, and B grades are counted as a percentage of the total number of A-level entries.

The Editor of Parent Power, Helen Davies, said the list was a valuable asset which can help parents plan the best for their children when it comes to education.

She said: “The educational landscape continues to be challenging across both the state and independent sectors, and this is the first true assessment of post-pandemic exam results.

······

This comes after the school joined the Thinking Schools Academy Trust earlier this year.

The school had been threatened with having its funding agreement withdrawn when the watchdog found that its pupils felt “unsafe” after being subjected to sexist or racist comments.

The Ofsted report found school bosses had not ensured that boys understood “how to interact appropriately” with girls.

The report maintained that certain parts of the school “have become a hostile environment for some pupils”.

According to the school's website, the minimum requirement for the entry into the sixth form is at least 38 points across the best five subjects.

Conditional places will then be offered to those students with the highest average points score, based on predicted grades, in their best 8 GCSEs or equivalents, including English and Mathematics. If students have an equal average points score, the number of grade 9s (or A* grades for unreformed GCSEs), predicted or achieved will be used to differentiate between candidates if necessary.

Thanks, these are the minimum requirements, I wonder what are the grades actually needed to stand  a real change to be considered.
Like does it have to be all grade 9s. I guess only people who have applied before knows?!
