Dear parents, may I seek your kind advice? I would want to see my child enter either an elite local primary school (eg DG/BS, SPCC) or an international primary school. I understand that international schools are not easy to enter nowadays, and it would be easier to get into an international school at the kindergarten level.

May I ask whether you think it's feasible to have my child study in an international kindergarten (eg esf) and at the same time, provide Chinese training to her so that she can stand a chance to enter an elite local primary school? The plan is that even if she fails to enter an elite local primary, she can most likely still be able to enter esf primary.

Any parent had such experience? Thanks in advance!

Yes you can try, I knew at least one from ESF to SPCC, one ISF to DGS. There are also some who get lucky draw and change to local schools too. Nevertheless please don't put the kids in two kinders. But why would you want to get into local elite schools if you agree with the teaching principles of IS? Although they are famous, the old problem of DSE, the mindset of traditional teachings are still there. If you aim for top notch schools actually you can try GSIS and CIS etc

Just curious about the timing of the ESF kid to SPCC...how does it work? ESF only goes all the way until K2 (correct me if I'm wrong) but SPCC P1 starts after K3? Where did the kid go after K2 ESF? Did he study one year in ESF Y1 then transfer to SPCC?

Sounds ideal but how is the timing going to work? ESF kindy only goes all the way until K2 then to Y1 but the elite school don't accept application until beginning of K3? Int school Y1 starts 1 year earlier then local school so you probably will be offer a place (if any) from an ESF primary before the whole local school application. I guess you can still apply for local school after you have started ESF primary but there are minimal Chinese in ESF Y1 and I honestly don't know how you can keep your kid up with the local school Chinese level.

Of course you need to put in a lot of effort to keep up the Chinese and maths levels, and fluent Cantonese. Not impossible, but does it worth it? Isn't that we choose IS for the sake of happy childhood and creative learning?  Rather than treating it as a backup plan for not getting in a local elite school. I found people keep wavering between two sides could risk ending up 兩頭吾到岸,兩邊不討好. The kid who got into SPCC then regretted and switched back to ESF at the end. 試過天堂仲點肯入地獄,anyway I am sure his achievement will be the same no matter he is in IS or LS.

Thanks for your advice! I agree with IS's principles, and want my child to be happy, confident and creative. I guess I think that elite local schools provide more exposure and all-rounded education, so I can take them even if it means more work for my child because they can raise confident and well rounded kids. (Please correct me if I am wrong)

But true... 試過天堂仲點肯入地獄?

I'm with you on that so I've decided to put my daughter into international school starting Y1 from a local kindergarten.
Honestly just set your mind onto either one and just stick with it.

I should not correct you, there is no right or wrong in choosing the IS or LS system. Just make sure you come up with the decision from adequate information and not just from biased and outdated information.

It really depends on the child's character. My son definitely does not suit the local system, he was on waitlist for all the KGs we applied, not to say those elite local KGs, but also the "voucher" KGs.
If your kid is smart and can do well in both IS and LS, better choose one path and give up the other. Guess it'll be easier for the kid to adapt.

Yes on the other hand, I knew a kid who is not suitable for IS, he likes people to give instructions and set target goal and he can learn well this way. During his 2 years in a IS kinder he totally "not knowing what to do" and failed all primary IS interviews, coz he was very shy and didn't speak at all in the interview setting. He is now in a local kinder k3 and he is happy in school and he even asks for more homework to do at home. Surprisingly he enjoy writing and doing homework and this is where he got his confident back, rather than asking to speak up and takes initiatives like in the IS. So one need to understand your kid and decide the path according to the character.

Actually I played this game.  My kid in ESF Y1 now, and last year in October, I applied for one of the elite schools because I want to know the actual requirement of these schools for a kid around 6 to 7 instead of legends from internet (the fee is only $100).  Actually she passed the first round, but dropped for the second round because we have other arrangment.  Still, I do not think it is impossible she pass the second round, so value what you want after you get the offer.  Anyway, it is no harm to teach the kid reading in Chinese or do some maths, only if you have the right method.

You will not know now but you will know when the child goes to N class...I was told that my son constantly moves out of his seat to go for toys that he likes, after going to N class for half a year. When I ask both class teachers whether he suits the IS system, both of them say yes at once......

Yes if the kid is the right type and is ready to learn, I think it's possible. At the end kinder stuffs are not that difficult and even parents can self teach them

May I know more about how international schools teach (i know this is an extremely broad question... pls bear with me)? My major concern about IS is lower Chinese level +/- less discipline (驚學壞).

Are these outdated and biased views about IS? I went to a local school and only have a child who is not even two yet, so I have little info about IS. Any opinion on IS is welcome!!
TIA!

Really? My child will enter n class this year. We will observe then. In this case, we should keep her english level as good as possible so she can still enter international kindergarten later?

If she gets offer from hk preschool (kln tong), st catherine, victoria and learning habitat, which one(s) will open her to both options of international and local kindergartens?

Many thanks again!
