I would like to learn more about their Chinese curriculum. Would their students
1) be able to read and write in Chinese reasonably well after their graduate?

2) Do they teach only simplified Chinese or both? I heard mixed message from different teachers.

My boy went to QBS from Y1-6, now he is in South Island School. He was in Pathway 3 Chinese from Y3-6. QBS has stronger Chinese comparatively as they have daily Chinese from Y2-6.

When he was in Y6, he could write a 200-300 words Chinese composition. He can read and understand most of the HK newspaper with the traditional characters but he usually can only write the simplified Chinese.

We speak English at home. He can communicate reasonably well in PTH with native PTH speakers.
He can speak PTH better than Cantonese. However, his mother tongue is English and he seldom reads Chinese books.

As far as I know, the Chinese textbook they used in QBS was from Singapore, thus in simplified Chinese. However, occasionally they may have some teaching materials e.g. song lyrics in traditional Chinese.

其實QBS 同 South Island School (SIS)中文都唔係咁差。

Year 6 pathway 3 教徐志摩作品「再別康橋」，在課堂上唱林宥嘉主唱新版「再別康橋」，學生全都可以不看歌詞整首唱出來，再分段背默, 我自己好似中一正讀。畢業全級 all pathways Year 6 唱王力宏主唱「相信自己」，外國人都可成首唔睇歌詞唱。

SIS Year 8 教「小抄寫員」、文言文「愚公移山」和「夸文逐日」（出自《山海經.海外北經》。依稀記得我中一中文都係讀「小抄寫員」及「愚公移山」兩篇。

Thanks for your sharing!

May I know if you have given him private lessons in order to get into Pathway 3? If only relying on school, can they still do the 200-300 words composition?

ActiveHealth - Thanks so much for your feedback. I remember reading your comment on 「再別康橋」but couldn't find it anymore. So i should expect my daughter to be able to write at least a passage in Simplified chinese upon her graduation from QBS. How is your son's chinese now in SIS?

How did you like QBS? How are the facilities and the teachers there? We have an interview coming up and would like to know more in details about the school. Sorry for bombarding you with so many question.

One more questions on the ESF Chinese pathway - are they students assigned rather than choosing their pathway according to their Chinese ability in Year 2? Do they get to change their pathway along the way or is it fixed until they graduate?

You can find Quarry Bay School page in FB to get to know more about the school life in QBS. They also have a blog for Y1 in the school website with weekly updates. I personally like it a lot!

The pathway is assigned according to ability. They have continuous assessment and pathway can be changed.

He only has 2 lessons of Chinese a week now and he is learning a third language French/Spanish which is compulsory in Year 7 & 8.

He is still improving in Chinese but at a slower pace.

Many students still reach Pathway 3 in Chinese without outside tuition with the right support at home. The best students in Chinese are from PTH speaking families and read heaps in Chinese. They never need outside Chinese tuition.

QBS was great for my boy with great support & facilities. He loved going to QBS and he had very solid foundation academically.

May I know if the kids know how to write Chinese in QBS year 2? If they have chinese dictation?

My boy was in Pathway 2A in QBS when he was in Year 2. He could write his name and simple characters like numbers by then. I can't remember if he had Chinese dictations in Year 2. From Year 3 he got in Pathway 3 onwards he learned to write more Chinese. They also have frequent dictations in Chinese in QBS & SIS at least in the highest pathways from Year 3.

Not sure about the other (lower) pathways though.

QBS has daily Chinese lessons from Year 2 onwards when compared to other ESF primary where they only have Chinese 4 times a week. I was told by other Bradbury parents in my boy's year now that they only had Chinese 4 times a week, not sure about the situation in Bradbury now.

4. Will they have newsletter regularly to inform what had been taught?

Do they expect parents to do revision for the kids on dictations or assessments, or are they conducted sudden ones at school? Some schools handing test materials back home and expect students to study but some don't.
